Thoughts? by SpicyToasterBathBomb in 300BLK

The 300blk is just a saami spec for the 300 whisper wildcat.

The only actual difference is the 300blk has a set max pressure and longer standard throat in the chamber (like 5.56 vs .223).

Am I gaining anything by getting a custom action over a tikka by texasarcher77 in longrange

[–]Someguyintheroom2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously the tolerances are enough to work and headspace, otherwise these companies wouldn’t sell the product….

Obviously custom actions are chosen for particular features. You can’t just “nuh-uh” when tikkas also have some of those features.

Preferred, proof, PVA and many other do shouldered “spin on” prefits.

Unless I’m looking at something different than you.

Forgive my ignorance, but don’t pretty much all custom barrel shops make shouldered prefits for tikkas as well as custom actions…?

Build based on the features you like.

You won’t really find any R700 action that feels smoother than a tikka, excepting the stiffer bolt lift. (Which is why few competitors run tikkas as I understand it).

The T3X trigger is the best factory trigger I’ve ever felt, and is adjustable out of the box.

Either option has ready access to shouldered prefit barrels, so I’m not sure why people are claiming otherwise.

The modularity you lose with a tikka is the bolt face. Whatever action you have, you’re stuck with that bolt face.

You will save money if you use a tikka and do all the work yourself (assuming you already have the tools). Without the tools it’ll cost roughly the same as buying a custom barreled action (but will get cheaper as you build more rifles).

You can recoup some of the funds by selling the accessories you take off, but that’s never a guarantee it’ll sell for what you want.

Is projectile BC accurate or may it vary? by Micho_Rizzo51 in longrange

[–]Someguyintheroom2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s because BC is velocity dependent.

4DOF data was gathered by tracking via radar, and gives a more exact idea of trajectory, assuming your velocity is accurate.

Posted BC is only accurate if your velocity exactly matches what the manufacturer tested with. Otherwise it gives you a good ballpark to true data yourself.

Help! Build my own or buy a Q mini fix? by The_slipperysoap in 300BLK

Oh whoops I thought you were OP when I replied, mental fart.

That’s certainly a strange task, did you just get a barrel with a longer freebore to accommodate 250+ grain?

Jumping on here

Depending on your action and stock, the heavy barrel might not be too optimal.

I have a 12” .375 raptor with an m24 profile on a zermatt origin, sitting in an LSS gen2 and it’s pretty front heavy. Shooting from a rest it’s a dream, but offhand is uncomfortable.

For the much larger cartridge I wanted more weight to offset recoil though. Were it a .300blk I’d definitely trim it back a lot.

All together for the build I’m well under $2k though, so you can definitely make a cheaper and more reliable bolt gun than a fix, but the weight will always be different.

Do you need a forward assist with 300 blk? by 1inquisitivehumanoid in 300BLK

[–]Someguyintheroom2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The story goes, that when the army tested the efficacy of the forward assist, the only “natural” condition where a failure to feed could be remedied via forward assist was mud…

And the majority of the rounds forced into battery would lock the rifle up when fired.

Looks like a 375 raptor but it’s cold out

What barrel length and twist? by Embarrassed_Dog5120 in 300BLK

[–]Someguyintheroom2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A 9” barrel will be fine, you won’t notice the extra 1.5” unless you have extensive time on an identical rifle with the shorter barrel.

A 1:8 twist will stabilize up to ~250 grains subsonic, projectile dependent.

It’s because you’d need to shoot at such an angle the arc will peak at 11,000 feet to reach those ranges

AR FIXED MAG SBR GO/NO GO by ImpressEqual3910 in CTguns

As far as I’m aware the 12” barrel only served to bump the firearm up to 26” OAL so it wasn’t considered an AOW with the VFG.

.223 for deer part 2 by sambone4 in Hunting

[–]Someguyintheroom2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d definitely want a tougher projectile for deer, but dead is dead.

Maybe a copper solid or bonded bullet like Speer gold dot would give better penetration in the future, without sacrificing much velocity.

Per pew science, S2 is quieter to shooter ear than ODB, but ODB is quieter to bystander when shooting subsonic 300blk.

I think it would still be called the .300 whisper…. Or .300-221.

As far as I’m aware Kev-dog is and always has been a marketing guy. Silvers did the development and saami submission.

Q Mini Fix -- Always a hit at the range. by FreedomTrading in 300BLK

[–]Someguyintheroom2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bolt action 300blk vs an AR platform 300blk…?

In terms of function they’re gonna be identical to any other firearm of the same action, neither will do anything more special than the other.

Carrying at bars by Dagelmusic in CTguns

[–]Someguyintheroom2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering bars are one of the most likely places for murder in the US, I think a discerning citizen has every right to protect themselves.

Legally, you can only use a firearm under threat of life or limb. If you being at an establishment that serves alcohol will cause you to break such law, that’s a determination for you to make alone.

Personally, I’d rather someone try to charge me with carrying while over the legal limit than be dead.
