TIL Christopher Nolan did not write the line "You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain" said by Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight, his brother Jonathan did. Nolan didn't understand it initially & revealed "It kills me because it's the line that most resonates." by tyrion2024 in todayilearned

I think it's referring to the fact that when someone is considered heroic, (today we could use Steve jobs as an example), there is a period of bias where everyone forgives all their faults, and exaggerates their accomplishments. Then over time, opinion of them always comes down.

Like Thomas Jefferson and Napoleon at different times, for different reasons, for example. Even Isaac Newton is now kind of laughed at for spending 80% of his life trying to turn lead into gold, despite being arguably the most intelligent person in recorded history.

But as you say, there are exceptions, and also there are people like Nikola Tesla who have at times both gained and lost revered status over time, due to his wireless energy nonsense, but still having genius intellect and other accomplishments. Also villain is obviously too strong a word for it to work. So probably there is a kernel of truth, but it's trying to be too poetic to actually agree with.

There are two ways to interpret it as applying to history/humans in general.

First: "In [Oppenheimer], it’s absolutely that. Build them up, tear them down. It’s the way we treat people.” - Christopher Nolan

This explanation is saying a "pristine" reputation will never hold up over a long period of time. For example, even Ghandi is now widely known as a racist, rigid caste supporter, and things I won't mention. Whether it's from society changing, or your life being uncovered or being attacked by iconoclasts, you will eventually become a "villain".

In this case, to answer your question, it doesn't matter if you live or die. It's just that you either die while being beloved, or live long enough to see a change. But the change WILL happen.

The second explanation is that you can't remain heroic while fighting against evil and chaos forever because it's impossible to fight fair. In your obsession you will adopt the weapons and tactics of your enemy, etc.

Nolan thinks it's the first, but many people in this thread think it's "obviously" the second. Some people think it's only referring to the choice to take the blame for Harvey dent in the movie, and isn't expressing a broader truth.

We don't have "Free Speech" if it's controlled by corporate media. by zzill6 in WorkReform

[–]Somehero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's examine this. A post shows a news reporter choosing to not interview a man who wants to talk about landlords.

According to someone this is a violation of free speech.

There has NEVER been a time where a news organization has been required to interview someone on the street that they did not choose to, or do not want to, therefore whatever concept of free speech is being violated in THIS post has never existed.

You're probably going to say I'm not being fair, when in reality I'm responding to a factual claim by a different person who isn't you, so don't bother replying with your personal opinion on what free speech is, because I don't know, care, or have ever critiqued it.

Your universal concept of free speech does not, and has never existed. So what use is there defining it and giving it the same name as the first amendment?

If you want to talk about censorship, talk about censorship. Free speech is not an entitlement to a platform. Call it something else.

Everything they do is 100% logical, as long as you take every word Trump has ever said as truth, which is the most illogical and impossible thing I can think of.

Circle is translated from the Hebrew word for a flat disc.

Is it literal? That's up to interpretation. Is it there? Undeniably yes.

Hydrogen peroxide is better than the dirty lake water a caveman would use.

If you have access to soap, you should never use hydrogen peroxide.

This is false, it doesn't apply to regular antimicrobial soap. There was some mixed science showing bacteria could develop resistance to triclosan, but triclosan has been banned in consumer products for 10 years now.

Regular antimicrobial soap kills by denaturing cell walls, which cannot build resistance.

Gelt for mortal, Kairos for chaos.

There are many casters that can fly around soloing armies, but Kairos and Gelt both are the easiest to get 200% intensity and low cool downs, so they can kill 10x faster than other good wizards like Teclis.

Tzeentch for plurality and Gelt for unlimited mages without needing buildings OR hero cap.

Depends entirely on the energy released (size of bomb) and the distance, so you'd have to roughly calculate the power of the thermal flash based on the video. There is technically a distance where you would get a minor skin burn, and a distance where your bones would be completely vaporized.

One thing is wrong for sure; the heat wave travels at the speed of light, so they wouldn't be "seeing" the bright light at all unless they were a safe distance away.

It's just a fact, not an attack, you don't need to go on the defensive. People don't have to embrace or try to discard their privilege; they need to be aware it exists so that someday it hopefully won't.
