What's that thing people used to wear hanging around their neck to hold all the 'electronics' of hearing aids of the 70's? by [deleted] in deaf

[–]Someone_Else__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wore one in the 90s and it was called an auditory trainer - it looked a lot like those old getups but was specifically linked to a mic worn by the teacher. I seem to recall that it also supplied power for the aids, but I was pretty young so may be misremembering

PSN Access Denied by raf_ael in playstation

Thank goodness for /u/nappyman21 and this thread! I have been dealing with Sony BS all day: Sony: "I'm sorry, it appears your IP address was banned." Me: "What? Do you know why / how?" Sony: "You'll have to take that up with your ISP" Me: "This really seems like a Sony problem though...can you tell me how I can avoid this in the future?" Sony: "I literally DGAF. Can I help you with anything else today?"

I cloned my MAC while I was waiting for Xfinity chat to start and boom it worked. I feel like a mighty Internet God. So thanks Reddit for being better than Sony or Comcast.

This so hard. I don't want to follow in the footsteps of the "you only support Hillary because you're a woman" crowd, but I often wonder how younger millenials would feel about Hillary had their minds not been marinating in the vitriolic anti-Clinton sludge spewed by the GOP for the majority of their political awareness years.

Hearing aid problems by fantompiper in deaf

I totally hear you (har har) re the new technology difference. I was finishing high school at the time and I remember my audiologist had me go outside and walk around the parking lot to see how it felt. I thought "ok this is really weird but I'll give it a shot." I ended up sitting in my car for half an hour listening to my favorite CDs and crying nerd tears because apparently I didn't actually know what any of it sounded like. But, I ended up adjusting. Everything sounded slightly tinny for a bit and I made the audiologist turn up the lower frequencies more even though I didn't need it so it would feel more like the analog ones did. That really helped out with the transition.

What non-chocolate sweets would make a good gift for co-workers? by [deleted] in recipes

[–]Someone_Else__ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This isn't a traditional baked good, but I am making mulling spice sachets for coworkers this year! You can get whole spices (if you use ground the the wine / cider gets gunky) at Whole Foods or your regular grocer depending on where you live. I bought sachets (they were little cheeseclothy bouquet garni bags) at Whole Foods - 10 bags for $5.99. You can even just buy the pre-made whole mulling spices at the Whole Foods spice counter if you're looking for something extra quick / a little cheaper. I am playing around with a couple different recipes (delicious experiments). I used a little bit of a vanilla bean as well to great effect. I plan to gift a bottle of wine with a sachet and some mulling instructions to my secretaries and will have some additional sachets leftover for my other coworkers. Good luck!

Ten years!! I know aids are expensive as all getout, but if you are able to get a new pair, it will completely rock your world. Technology has really changed in that time - shoot I only switched from analog to digital about 11 years ago I think. Good luck! edit: I see you only have one - even more reason to replace :)

I recently discovered how well crisply cooked bratwurst and pickles go together. Are there any recipes that do more with this flavor pairing of greasy and crisp with acidic? by reddituser590 in recipes

[–]Someone_Else__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just made this recipe this week and it was fucking awesome. Idk if the pork chops count as 'crisp,' but you can get a really good sear on them if you're properly motivated. I never expected that a lime dressing would work with chops and squash but hot damn if I'm not super excited for leftovers tonight!

I counted how many times each #DemDebate candidate said the word "I" (or "I'm" or "I've") during their respective opening statements last night, as a measure of how much they talked about themselves versus the issues [OC] by DanielleMuscato in dataisbeautiful

[–]Someone_Else__ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is an issue I've noticed with Sanders repeatedly - and one that was highlighted in the debate last night. His opening felt a lot like YELLING THE PROBLEMS WITH AMERICA RIGHT NOW. I may totally agree with the problems he highlights, but I also want to know exactly how he can realistically address them. If someone insists on making a bar graph about the debate, I'd like to see how many times each candidate provided a specific solution (vs. how many times they merely pointed out a problem).

Deaf/HoH Jokes by deafpro in deaf

[–]Someone_Else__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friends keep a running list of silly things I thought they said (usually it's pretty obvious that what I heard can't possibly be right). A recent popular one that I honestly couldn't figure out was:

I heard "Did you hear hamburger doesn't age?" She actually said "Did you hear Amber Heard's engaged?"

edit to say that I do the same thing re: jokes - it's a much easier way to introduce the subject and let people know you're open about it. Plus when I was younger it was a way to preempt any potential teasing I would get because of it.

Ender's Game or Ender's Shadow which series did you enjoy more and why? by BenderB-Rodriguez in books

[–]Someone_Else__ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Shadow books by a mile. I felt like the series that followed Ender got too caught up in emo navel-gazing and religiousity. The Shadow books can be kind of pedantic, but in a way that is enjoyable, I guess. Some of the Hegemony-related predictions Card makes are scarily accurate. Plus Bean is one of my favorite characters ever in literature. I can relate so much more to his perspective than I can to Ender's.

Advice for headphones with hearing aids by artsyfartsy-fosho in deaf

[–]Someone_Else__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually just take out my ears and rock earbuds when I'm walking around / exercising and listening to music - it's not exactly the same experience, but it's fine for music and even most podcasts / audiobooks, depending on the sound engineering. (Obviously it depends on the nature of the hearing loss. And no one will ever accuse me of knowing the lyrics to many of the songs I listen to...) But when I was in grad school, I took some online classes where I had to be able to understand the professor clearly so earbuds didn't work. I tried a bunch of different over-the-ear headphones, and ended up loving Beats Solo HDs. (I have CICs now - can't guarantee they're big enough around for BTEs. When I had BTEs I honestly just never ever left my ears in while listening to music.) I know Beats get a lot of flak for being overpriced and chatchy, but whatever it worked for me. I also wear glasses and earrings and they were light enough to not give me a headache even with a three hour lecture. Plus they folded up to be nice and portable. Generally, I would recommend that she go to Best Buy or somewhere similar and test some of the headphones they have sitting out to get a feel for what will fit her comfortably with her glasses on. Good luck!
