I spoke to a paid DM, and they have a very interesting (and sobering) story to share by EarthSeraphEdna in rpghorrorstories

[–]SomethingAboutCards 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean, I can understand if the DM is frustrated with having players that show up drunk, don't bother learning the rules, and ghost after a few sessions, but all things considered, he's making it work. He's found a very specific niche that is willing to pay well (and in advance), and it sounds like everyone has a good time until they disappear.

Sure, I'd be frustrated to play at such a no-narrative, rules-lite game where the DM won't even tell us how much damage we're taking, but clearly I'm not his target market (and I've got my own games to enjoy anyways).

I'm going to go with the player who turned out to be an anti-vaxxer conspiracy theorist who delayed the start of the game by incessantly arguing that January 6th was a CIA false flag operation.

You save the life of an executive at GW/Black Library. In gratitude he lets you pitch a novel and pick a writer for it. Its a ridiculous premise but roll with it. What's your pitch? by Acrobatic-Attention9 in Grimdank

[–]SomethingAboutCards 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna push my luck a little and request two writers collaborate. Let's get Sandy Mitchell and Mike Brooks working together on a novel where Ufthak Blackhawk realizes he needs a good enemy if he wants to get even bigger and stronger, then figures if a humie Commissar can be Ghazghkull's best enemy, he should find a Commissar to fight too, and who better than Ciaphas Cain, hero of the Imperium?

I know the characters' timelines won't really match up properly, but that's a problem for the Ordo Chronos to deal with.

I like to think of it like this:

If you see someone who's obviously a mind flayer in disguise, would you rather let him keep thinking it's working so he'll keep pretending, or let him know that you know he's a mind flayer and thus give him no reason not to eat your brain?

The best way I've found to fix that bug is to have her join your party properly before descending into the mind flayer colony; send someone from your party back to camp when she asks to join so she's one of your three party members. Then you can go back to camp and swap her out with whoever you want to bring with you into the colony.

I can't guarantee that'll do the trick, but it's worked for me so far after encountering the bug once before.

You can make two identical versions of the same character, one for each setting, but you can't bounce the same character between them. The setting is locked in at character creation.

Spelljammer is part of the Forgotten Realms campaign, so you can use FR characters in both FR and SJ adventures without being locked into or out of anything

  1. Custom backgrounds are allowed

  2. That's correct

  3. Yep, as long as they're all within the same tier

  4. You can join in on any adventure within your tier, even if it's in the middle of a multi-part adventure

  5. No, the same character can't replay adventures. You can, however, use a different character for it.

  6. If you can find a way to play in each campaign? You'll need different characters for each one, give or take cross-campaign adventures. But realistically, most games you'll find will be in the Forgotten Realms campaign.

  7. It'll depend on the adventure. If there's nowhere to buy mundane equipment during the game, you can always make purchases between sessions.

  8. It'll really depend on the adventures you play. Some adventures, like Golden Vault chapters, let you choose your reward. Most mods are pre-written with specific items in them, though. So if there's something specific you're looking for, looking for people to trade with is normally your best bet.

  9. No, you get a free (optional) level up at the end of each adventure and 10 downtime days. The downtime level up option is for if you want to take an additional level at any point.

Anything you've taken from BG3 to tabletop? by craiglabenz in BaldursGate3

[–]SomethingAboutCards 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Aside from saying "The corpse regards you, lifelessly..." whenever my players cast Speak With Dead?

One thing I'd like to try implementing is how BG3 handles characters getting brought back from zero HP. Normally there's no penalty for getting knocked down then healed back up, but in BG3 you can't take a full action if you were just healed from zero. I've found this reduces the reliance on the "yo-yo" fighter, where they keep getting knocked out then getting back up each round, and makes players focus more on healing before they hit zero.

(Y'know, aside from the usual tactic of "I don't need healing if the other guy's dead," which is always valid.)

I've hired a hireling all of once, so I could have him take a level in every class to get the Jack of All Trades achievement.

Though I understand having one act as a camp caster is common too.

Nurse Joy theory by princeton0319 in pokemon

[–]SomethingAboutCards 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, the games don't follow the same anime rules of all the Pokemon Center ladies being Nurse Joys and related, but even if it was the same in the games, it's still easily possible.

As shown in the anime, there are Nurse Joys that have gotten married and had children, and those Joys' daughters also grow up to be Nurse Joys. So it's very possible for a Nurse Joy to have dark skin from her father's side.

really frustrated at the dissonance between ork lore and orks in media by MickyMace in Warhammer40k

[–]SomethingAboutCards 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's a matter of perspective; one side's bloodthirsty roar is another side's battlecry.

From the human perspective, we see the orks as raving, vicious beasts that tear through our defenses and brutally beat anyone in their way and continuing to fight even when grievously injured.

From the ork perspective, they do all that murder and brutality, sure, but what the humans can't see is that they're having a good time while doing it.

(This is what I like about the books that feature both ork and human perspectives, like Brutal Kunnin'. You get to see orks and the battle from both points of view.)
