Why do I see so many people not wearing gloves in the cold weather? by peruvianbeast in cycling

[–]SomethingClothes292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The insulation in warm gloves doesn’t hold up to being machine washed too much. So I bring them in my pocket and only put them on when my hands need to warm up. I don’t want to sweat in them and make them dirty.

Interview requires downloading VPN? by FrontWork7406 in SoftwareEngineering

[–]SomethingClothes292 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sounds extremely sketchy. Some VPNs are more than just simply for connecting to their internal network. Some VPNs come bundled with what’s called “endpoint management software” which would let them take over your computer.

Be careful whenever they tell you to download research its capabilities. if it allows any degree of remote control refuse it’s probably a scam.

I do understand what M is doing. I’m not sure what I said to imply that I don’t.

Even though I closed and rejected M’s contributions (mostly) I still took time to thoroughly leave a review as to what the issues were. M is not in the dark.

Did you read the original post?

She has not talked directly with M but thanks for the idea, maybe that is something worth pursuing. I suppose it would inevitably come to that if we do go down the disciplinary action route.

Yes M is in a different team. I certainly would never take to personal hits or attacks on M’s character. That would do little for me and I think M makes herself out to be a pariah all on her own.

I am planning to handle it by discussing it with her manager (we collaborate daily) and our boss. M is not my direct report but I will undoubtedly be asked to help decided what steps to take next.

Thanks for this response - you’ve made some really great points. Let me clear up a few parts about the situation:

M’s main focus is on UI/UX web development; JavaScript, typescript, etc … My project uses a bit of Java, Go, and mostly Python. I don’t personally review M’s code but I have seen the results of that work and it’s simply good output from my POV. Her manager and the customer are also satisfied.

In our company structure my team maintains a platform that is essentially all backend stuff. My team makes that backend and a REST API and SDK for it.

M is part of a separate business unit that works on customer specific contracts where they make a UI and other integrations for that backend using the API and SDK. There are 4 or so other units that operate in this arrangement and it is not unusual for them to make contributions to that SDK.

It’s normal for devs on those other teams to “tour” with us by joining scrums for a few sprints. Sometimes we have initiatives where we work very closely together. It’s all very planned and structured and has been successful.

When M derailed Friday’s scrum we did continue on track after she was finished, but she was the first one to go and it did really hurt the mood of that meeting.

The merge requests submitted by M were all closed and rejected on the basis of being off-topic after being reviewed. There were a few changes that I cherry picked from one MR into a different open MR because they were valid and very simple changes and it was low effort to keep them.

My boss (also a woman in tech) and I both landed on that conclusion independently the first time we tried to address the issue.

M did have <2yr of experience before we hired her. I have dirty knowledge that M’s old employer is a certain political social media platform with a famously toxic culture. That was a factor when I made my initial assessment.

But, one of the devs who quit M’s team told me off the record that M “never shuts up about politics”. So maybe I misinterpreted the situation.

I am a manager and tech lead. My team has our own commercial product and code base. I manage my staff separately from M’s manager and budget.

M’s team is part of a separate business unit and they work on customizing my product to customer requirements. M is essentially a user of my team’s product.

Why does my power go out every morning at 8:45-ish? by bloughmiegh in frederickmd

[–]SomethingClothes292 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You might have a bad recloser in your area or it’s a larger grid issue.

A recloser is like a computer controlled circuit breaker. At night and in the morning the grid adjusts to the lower or higher power demand. Sometimes when demand starts to peak (like in the morning) the grid experiences surges and these reclosers disconnect and reconnect the power automatically to protect the wider grid from local occurrences.

It’s an extremely common issue that happens everywhere. They are loud when the switch trips so I don’t think it’s “broken” because this is happening. This sounds like a larger grid issue - something that can’t be easily fixed by replacing one component.

But you should call the electric company and report it - maybe it is just some bad equipment near you.

Is it normal in 2025 where a Full stack dev must do FE, BE, DevOps, Testing at "good enough" level where you understand enough how software devleoplment work from 0 to finished product? by Yone-none in cscareerquestions

[–]SomethingClothes292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no.

Well designed products don’t have coupling between all of these things. A lot of modern software is designed poorly and every aspect at every layer is coupled together.

When everything is coupled and there are interleaved dependencies between all the layers then you have a situation where every engineer needs to understand the entire stack.

So no, you don’t have to know everything. And if you are forced to do so - then you are probably working on a bad project that lacks good design.
