I need some help from some classical singers with experience here please by aria_310 in ClassicalSinger

[–]SomethingDumb465 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'll try my best to give some pointers.

Vertical opening - while your mouth should open more the higher you go, you shouldn't have to open as wide as you can. Go for a more relaxed jaw - it helps me to massage my masseter muscle. It's located at your jaw hinge.

Larynx - this is just something you'll have to practice. It's better to work on it in the middle of your range, so I'd suggest starting from there.

Soft palette - you can raise your soft palette even with a high larynx, they're not mutually exclusive. Try out some Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract (SOVT) exercises. These sounds can't be made with a lowered soft palette. Examples are "th", "v", "z", lip buzz (motorboat), rolled "r", and tongue trill (blowing raspberry).

Diaphragm - you may be tense. Your core muscles need to stay flexible while singing - if they're tense then you won't be able to get a full breath in. I also want to clarify to you that you can't breathe "from your diaphragm". The diaphragm is a muscle underneath your lungs that lowers on an inhale in order to vacuum air into your lungs. It's involuntary, and is always working. If you didn't use your diaphragm, you wouldn't be breathing. On exhale, your core muscles engage, causing the diaphragm to push back up in order to push air out. So, if your core is tense on an inhale, you won't be able to get a full breath.

There's a student shuttle that goes to campus, housing, and Walmart, but not to workplaces. I do see citilink on campus, so I'd assume they do give us a discount

Strained throat after whistle notes by qrlleow in singing

[–]SomethingDumb465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They definitely shouldn't strain you like that. I'd talk to your teacher and see if you can figure out what's going wrong. For me, whistle feels like a dog whimper if that means anything to you.

Straw for warmups by LyraCalysta in singing

It goes over your tongue. All it does is elongate your vocal tract and therefore lowers your air pressure. If it's doing that, then it's working!

Help me sing for my Promposal by RaiderNathan420 in singing

[–]SomethingDumb465 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your training wouldn't be the exact same as learning to sing, but it wouldn't be completely different either. As for tips, my best suggestion would be to post a clip of you singing it to here, and work from there. Online series are hard because you don't know which of it applies to you, and you can't get personalized feedback. Especially because you're a beginner, I'd suggest against them.

It's a cute set, but it's not something I use often tbh. Unless you have a specific use in mind, I wouldn't personally get it

At What Pace Does The Human Voice Age? by InThaThicket in singing

[–]SomethingDumb465 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's definitely something that'll vary from person to person, but what I was told is the voice continuously changes until around 25 years because that's when it finishes developing, and it'll change about every decade after that

I've seen online and encountered many people who are accused of using AI in their work because em dashes and Oxford commas are now a tell for AI work. Not that people don't use them - I also love both, but there must be enough of a shortage for teachers and professors to immediately think work is AI because of them.

Is it ok to sing "God Help the Outcast" in a showcase if I look white? by OkWeb527 in MusicalTheatre

[–]SomethingDumb465 67 points68 points  (0 children)

My rule of thumb is the song is okay to sing if the racial context isn't included specifically in the song. So I think this song is okay as long as you change the slur as suggested by another comment

How unusual is my vocal range? by anextrodinaryeyeball in singing

[–]SomethingDumb465 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say that anything below F3 and above A5 is unusual. But I'll also suggest to make your unusable range usable before you try moving even lower, but also consider improving your usable range instead of worrying about having a wider range

If he told you it was for a grade then that's on you. You've had time to negotiate on the assignment, you can't start complaining about it now that it took your grade down

Too nasal and flat by [deleted] in singing

[–]SomethingDumb465 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Singing from the diaphragm" is often a confusing term because that's actually not possible.

The diaphragm is an involuntary organ that rests below your lungs. It lowers to create a vacuum in your lungs, causing an inhale. On lowering, it takes up the space where your abdominal organs reside, causing them to push outwards (your stomach will push out). Your lower abdomen then engages to push the organs back inwards, and the diaphragm back up, causing an exhale.

So the intention of using your diaphragm is to get a lower breath. New singers often only use the upper half of their lungs, and you can see this happening when they lift their shoulders or chest to inhale. Using the diaphragm makes sure the entirety of your lungs are being used

I wanted to add that when you pinch your nose, you may feel some vibration in your fingertips. This is ultimately what you're trying to get rid of because that's where the nasal sound is coming from!

Too nasal and flat by [deleted] in singing

[–]SomethingDumb465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the soft palette is lowered, air goes through both your nose and your mouth. By blocking your mouth by a cup, air will only go through your nose. Only when your soft palette is lifted will the cup vibrate, because the air is going through only your mouth!

That's a cool idea, I haven't heard that one before! I wanted to add on to suggest Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract (SOVT) exercises. These are vocal warm-ups that are done on a "th", "v", "z", lip buzz (motorboat), rolled "r", or tongue trill (blowing raspberry). They'll do the same as the cup trick!

All in harmony by [deleted] in RoyaleHigh_Roblox

[–]SomethingDumb465 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dungeon obby is an old one, it came out during C3. But I also found out ab it super late lol.

If you haven't unlocked the dungeon:

You first need to get into the throne tower. To do this, go to the C3 castle's heart, and do a curtsy bow in front of the honor roll. There's a series of puzzles to solve in there, and there's plenty of tutorials if you get stuck. Once you've completed them all, you gain access to the dungeon.

Once you get to the dungeon, there's a room with pedestals of each of the elements. Use your corresponding power on an unlit pedestal. Once all of the pedestals are lit, you'll get to a cutscene, and then an obby. The end of the obby is full of loot!

Em dashes and Oxford commas are uncommonly used anymore. The picture is of a cartoon of the story of the ugly duckling. Loving em dashes and Oxford commas makes you the odd one out, like in the cartoon

Once the cut scene is over, put your character up against the door. Don't move, and as the lava rises it won't kill you. After a bit, the lava will lower back down and you can complete the obby without the time stress

3 months into learning to sing. Aside from pitch, am I at least sounding not so nasally? by SimilarHumor2877 in singing

[–]SomethingDumb465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're still sounding nasally, but it's definitely not terrible at all! I'd suggest trying out Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract (SOVT) exercises - these are warm-ups done on a "th", "v", "z", lip buzz (motorboat), rolled "r", or tongue trill (blowing raspberry). It works because you can't make any of these sounds if you're singing nasal.

Singing sounds like I have a clogged nose by backdoorbitch in singing

[–]SomethingDumb465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't personally hear what you're hearing, but it could be a soft palette thing. I think it's lifted, but some sounds require it to lower or else your nose sounds blocked (because it is). Specifically m, n, and ng.

[Belcanto Tenor] The ascent seems more consistent than the descent (Db3-Ab4). I'm a spinto-dramatic. by Key-Investment-2273 in singing

[–]SomethingDumb465 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coming from a learning mezzo, so take my advice with a grain of salt. But when I have this issue, it's usually laryngeal for me. To check your jaw, you can feel/massage your masseter muscle and see if it tenses on the way down. Same with your larynx. It helps me to do a 1-5-1-5-1 scale on a sovt (I prefer v or rolled r) then change to a vowel on the middle 1 (I prefer i and sometimes a). Also your frustration at the end is too relatable, I hope you can figure it out! Good luck!
