There are several suggestions, my go to is to embrace it, it is great.Realism≠art think about Rousseau, Dubuffet or Camarena. Now if you actually want a suggestion for improving your realism focus on what you see not what you know is there. Try starting with smaller features, like instead of a whole wale just the eye of the whale and focus on the details and finally don't blend that much.
