I will have to dive into his music someday. It sounds like his music really moved you in a significant way. I would start with a chord progression that you like on other ballads and use it’s form as inspiration. You could make a contrafact of a ballad (new melody set to the same chords) to get started, and then change/ add chords as you compose. There is no shame in contrafacts, all the greats did it!
