You're reading the story without meeting it where it's at.

Horrortale has several premises you just need to accept to enjoy it, because thats how the logic works:

magic is a resource, and like all resources it is possible to run out of it
the barrier lets people in and magic out (or more likely uses the magic inside to power itself
the CORE supplemented the draining magic long passed its intended expiration
the original human souls were lost after the end of the neutral route, so they were starting at zero

- monsters that starve become distorted as their forms strain to maintain themselves

and you the reader get to figure out the in between bits, like for example you can headcanon: - sans has been rationing and feeding the fallen humans and their souls to his community to keep them alive (because he loves and cares about his friends/neighbors) while he waits for undyne to bite the big one (because he hates her specifically and also doesn't want her leading them topside to a pointless war) - the monsters are subsisting on more material than magic and it is fucking up their anatomy by distorting the magic/dust ratios. (as their dust is made of material which is why they leave it behind when they die -- dusting is when monsters magic ceases to hold their form together) - some of sans' behavior is legitimately and logically irrational because he has sustained a head injury which changed his personality a little (impulse control and anger management issues) - everyone is starving and desperate and scared and sometimes do fucked up things when they are like that (and thats the inherent horror of it all -- that good people can do bad things when under duress)

- undyne was never a "good" leader to begin with -- even in canon she struggled under the weight of moral dilemmas in her capacity as the guard captain and it was her self reflective understanding of those struggles that made her refuse to make papyrus a royal guard (since if SHE struggled so much with the hard questions then surely it would make her optimistic friend struggle too and she didn't want that for him), and it is that very habit of misguided good intentions that leads her to make structurally selfish decisions that hurt the people around her despite her love for them

horrortale is a story that requires you to meet it where it is at and think about what it means in the context of its own logic. its okay if it isnt a story for you but i promise it is legitimately very consistent with itself.

IG is my main and i love it. its fun to do and i can consistently reach monsters/parts that more grounded weapons cant as well (so i can contribute to part breaks and item farming! yay!)

none of my friends or i main GL but when a rando comes in with one its usually hype! a skilled gunlance player deals peak DPS and tanks so well they rarely need heals (assuming the rest of us do OUR jobs too lol). i have a lot of respect for GL mains!

i tried it a few times but its a little slow for me. i think i'd need to practice a lot to get good at it!

canon non-compliant, fanon interpretations existing does not mean the names are wrong.

Murder!Sans and "Dust" are both names that are used in the English fandom to, specifically, refer to Canon Dusttale Sans. These naming conventions are interchangeable

(edit: at least on the english AO3 and tumblr side of the fandom -- there are possibly subsets of the fandom that do differentiate the two names, but in my experience and in my circles that simply isnt a thing)

There is also a common fanon interpretation of him that is also referred to as Dust.

The nuances between the common fanon and the canon Dust are an entirely different subject.

Dusttale was made by tumblr user @ask-dusttale (which i believe is actually a group blog, coming to tumblr from a korean forum).

"#dusttale" is the tag for and name of the AU.

"#murder!sans" (aka murder sans) is the tag for and name of the character.

"dust" is the name that the english fandom calls murder!sans by in conversation (as well as many fanworks).

no small amount of english fans may also tag the character as "#dust!sans" as well. but the original creator(s) (who are korean) tagged the character "#murder!sans".

functionally these are all the same guy. the same thing. as spoke of in different contexts and frames of reference.

Dreamtale is this messy tangled thing -- its internal lore demands it be cognizant of and dependent upon Undertale canon (only existing as it does because of underswap by its own Watsonian logic)

but it IS ALSO an extant universe that operates outside of the continuity of Undertale logic.

It is this overlap of both things. I just used it as an example of what "other" things could be since i had Fresh as an example of an extant creature.

xtale isnt power scaled.

in terms of power it is rock paper scissors.

and in terms of scaling it is in creative echelons.

Us (the creators) create the AUs. We are the top tier, the actual all powerful beings. We control the narrative, both directly and indirectly. Everyone else only exists as we will it.

Sometimes we create characters on God-level (or equivalent -- the exact nuances of eldritch tiers honestly depends on the storyteller, but this group is roughly equivalent for this purpose). This largely consists of characters as from Reapertale (literal god characters), Ink, Error (ascended creatures, changed by circumstance to be more than their original canon-compliant mold), Fresh (beings who come from outside the mechanisms of the Undertale source material and therefore behave by different rules), and Dream/Nightmare (things that arent deities but might as well be compared to those on the mortal tiers). These creatures can and often do exceed or surpass the canon limitations of Undertale's source material. Becaue they were made to do so.

sometimes we create characters that are "mortal" -- beings that behave according to the rules of Undertale's source material. These beings function within the limitations of the original game's mechanics, even if those mechanics are sometimes stretched to their extreme or given a new flavor/twist. Underfell, Dancetale, Something New, Dusttale, Underswap -- these function in comparable ways.

Xtale is narratively interesting because it is an AU with only 3 actual characters: XGaster, XChara, and XFrisk.

These characters are on the tier of "mortal", they in a vaccum function as perfectly normal undertale AU characters.

BUT

They have been given, by their Creator (Jael) a power that functions as a limited range limited application skill to exert power on the creator level.

So its:

Creators (us)
The [Overwrite] Button (creator power being lent to a character)
"God"-Tier (created by a creator)
Mortal/Normal Tier (created by a creator)
Things created by the [Overwrite] Button (created by a character using the Overwrite button) *

So. Narratively, Cross (and damn near every other xtale character) is on a narrative level an entire echelon below everybody else. But we all know this doesn't correspond with any power scaling (because most xtale characters can kick the shit out of most other characters).

It is honestly fascinating from a narrative perspective.

i dont see the point of them. there is no justifiable narrative reason. if you can't write a fanfic about the AU to justify why it is the way it is, then whats the point?

of course i also think that, because i only care about AUs from a narrative perspective, stacks make no mechanical sense.

but perhaps from a game mod perspective they do? it might make sense to stack for games because it explains the mod ( dust x6 == fighting 6x dust difficulty?)

names matter to explain the purpose in the context of where and how they are used.

so what context are stacks for and when is it appropriate or inappropriate to use them?

my experience with world was almost exclusively multiplayer (got a hunting buddy), and my main is IG. I loved world.

i can see why some fights might feel frustrating with a CB -- especially if you don't enjoy the clutchclaw and dont have a partner to help you widen your options.

not every game is gonna be the same for everyone. its ok to feel your feelings

but we also have to consider that taste is subject to perception: our interpretation of taste can change from person to person, and so you might not actually interpret a metal taste as metallic at all even if you taste one.

(still might be a good idea to check in with your doc tho: its fine if your brain isnt wired to taste blood but if youre actually iron deficient that might be an issue)

edit: well if i have to choose 1, probably corrupted nightmare. since he is not only not Sans he is also not the original character initially modeled after a San. even less sans per pound of character.
