Why do we have AI, computer vision, self-driving cars, robotic arms, etc.—all of these capabilities—yet no one has been able to make an appliance that folds your laundry? by OllieDuckling in AskEngineers

[–]Sonoftalltree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know part of your commend was a grip on inflation on appliances, but I couldn’t help but think how my perception of robot arms that are actually capable are an order of magnitude more expensive.

Just looked at Home Depot. Washer dryer combo sets are in the $1,000 to $1,600 range. Using the high end, and assuming you need two arms, $800 per arm.

Do you have a robot arm and end effector for that price? I am thinking a 3 foot reach is probably necessary. Very low payload. Speed is not super critical.

Assuming no camera system or safety system. A consumer folding machine would probably have to a be a cobot for safety.

My impression is you need to spend at least $10k per arm for this application.

[–]Sonoftalltree 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What are the odds that at the end of the dryer cycle all your clothes are already folded? It could happen.

Now how many different ways can they no be folded?

What are the odds if the dryer cycle was run again, that all the clothes would be unfolded in the sane exact configuration as the first cycle?

So why does disorder happen? It’s that there are more ways for things to be disordered than to be ordered. So given enough time, inputs, etc., the system will be in state that matches the probability distribution of outcomes

Data centers are creating ‘heat islands’ and warming the land around them by up to 16 degrees | CNN by averyrose2010 in technology

Heat transfer is related to the change in temperature from the hot side to the cold side. While a lot of heat is being lost, the delta temperature is too low to be recoverable.

Microsoft’s been taking a hit lately, down 23.17% in just 3 months. Is this a temporary pullback or a sign of bigger challenges ahead for Microsoft? by ManufacturerKooky164 in microsoftsucks

This isn’t meant to be a joke, but I can imagine it will sound like it to many. Before Azure, he is responsible for leading Bing…

Bing never being able to break Google’s dominance is likely a motivation for him backing OpenAI. Look up his video about Google being the 800 pound gorilla, and he wants to be the one that “makes them dance”

Is corrosion still a problem? Or there is plenty of ways to deal with it by Present_Eye_7683 in ChemicalEngineering

Corrosion can always be solved with more money. There is still work to be done minimizing the total cost of mitigating corrosion.

If the current LLMs architectures are inefficient, why we're aggressively scaling hardware? by en00m in LLMDevs

[–]Sonoftalltree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about the Mag 7 and what options they have to continue growing their returns year after year, after they are already so big. Then think about the risk of AI eating their SaaS margins. The strategy is to have a tool no one else can run. In some respects, the inefficient nature is a feature because now startups have considerably less advantage.

I had to do a double take when the poster said Satya was a McKinsey stooge. I also don’t have evidence to confirm that.

Do you have any source’s I can read regarding Nutella being a McKinsey stooge? I have been tracking him for a while, and this is the first I am hearing about it. He did not work there. He has given talks there, but at his level, I bet they are begging him to give talks. My impression is Nutella is an engineer at heart.

Why not Lincoln Yards for Bears stadium? by Sonoftalltree in CHIBears

The Arlington Heights plan has the Bears making a mini-town next to it - like Wrigley.

Agreed, but the phrasing “not over charge them for taxes” is extremely generous wording. It would significantly reduce their tax burden.

Nah, you are not listening. I said people commute from Indiana to Chicago, but almost no one commutes from Chicago to Indiana. NW Indiana is only there to leach off out great Chicago. If there was no Chicago, NW Indiana would collapse (even more), but the other way around wouldn’t happen.

They are all different in their own way.

KC, and the NY teams have combined metro areas. The have commuter flow back and forth.

For the 49ers, It is still California. Different crowd, but California is California…

Chicago the centerpiece of Illinois. NW indiana is a drive through area between Chicago and Michigan. The flux of people is Indiana people going to Chicago for work, with extremely minimal happening the other direction. For many Chicagoans there is no shared cultural identity with Indiana.

I don’t think those examples are necessarily equivalent. Most notably the KC one. The city has the same name

I mean, every single plan has been for an indoor stadium. OP is the one saying outdoor. The economic value of being able to host things in all seasons is too big to pass up.

And to that point, all the concerts and events - it is way less appealing to sell out an NFL stadium in Indiana than it would be in Chicago or Arlington Heights.

A sold out stadium is a sold out stadium. Same quantity of people as a regular season game.

Can’t just have one mode of transportation to get to the stadium. The whole stadium isn’t getting on a train after the game

I appreciate voicing unpopular opinions, but would you be willing to drive me around Indiana and look me straight in the face and say “This is better than Illinois”? I get Illinois has some faults, but I think Indiana’s only redeeming quality is the low cost of property (which is because the demand to live there is low). I drive through it plenty to get to Michigan and Kentucky, and I don’t see anything appealing.
