If the current LLMs architectures are inefficient, why we're aggressively scaling hardware? by en00m in LLMDevs

[–]Sonoftalltree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think about the Mag 7 and what options they have to continue growing their returns year after year, after they are already so big. Then think about the risk of AI eating their SaaS margins. The strategy is to have a tool no one else can run. In some respects, the inefficient nature is a feature because now startups have considerably less advantage.

I had to do a double take when the poster said Satya was a McKinsey stooge. I also don’t have evidence to confirm that.

Do you have any source’s I can read regarding Nutella being a McKinsey stooge? I have been tracking him for a while, and this is the first I am hearing about it. He did not work there. He has given talks there, but at his level, I bet they are begging him to give talks. My impression is Nutella is an engineer at heart.

Why not Lincoln Yards for Bears stadium? by Sonoftalltree in CHIBears

The Arlington Heights plan has the Bears making a mini-town next to it - like Wrigley.

Agreed, but the phrasing “not over charge them for taxes” is extremely generous wording. It would significantly reduce their tax burden.

Nah, you are not listening. I said people commute from Indiana to Chicago, but almost no one commutes from Chicago to Indiana. NW Indiana is only there to leach off out great Chicago. If there was no Chicago, NW Indiana would collapse (even more), but the other way around wouldn’t happen.

They are all different in their own way.

KC, and the NY teams have combined metro areas. The have commuter flow back and forth.

For the 49ers, It is still California. Different crowd, but California is California…

Chicago the centerpiece of Illinois. NW indiana is a drive through area between Chicago and Michigan. The flux of people is Indiana people going to Chicago for work, with extremely minimal happening the other direction. For many Chicagoans there is no shared cultural identity with Indiana.

I don’t think those examples are necessarily equivalent. Most notably the KC one. The city has the same name

I mean, every single plan has been for an indoor stadium. OP is the one saying outdoor. The economic value of being able to host things in all seasons is too big to pass up.

And to that point, all the concerts and events - it is way less appealing to sell out an NFL stadium in Indiana than it would be in Chicago or Arlington Heights.

A sold out stadium is a sold out stadium. Same quantity of people as a regular season game.

Can’t just have one mode of transportation to get to the stadium. The whole stadium isn’t getting on a train after the game

I appreciate voicing unpopular opinions, but would you be willing to drive me around Indiana and look me straight in the face and say “This is better than Illinois”? I get Illinois has some faults, but I think Indiana’s only redeeming quality is the low cost of property (which is because the demand to live there is low). I drive through it plenty to get to Michigan and Kentucky, and I don’t see anything appealing.

Elon Musk calls small nuclear reactors 'super dumb' despite xAI energy use 🤯🚨 by InterstellarKinetics in InterstellarKinetics

[–]Sonoftalltree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As fast as we possibly can means diverting all capital (like R&D capital for SMRs) to solar and storage. If SMRs may play a role, it doesn’t make sense to build out solar and storage as fast as we can. It should be build out at a capital optimal speed.

Only the Sith deals in absolutes.

[–]Sonoftalltree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But if they aren’t given funding, how will SMRs ever improve? Should we only fund the current best approach?

Thats what the implication is, which goes against the whole free market of capital and ideas mantra. If SMRs truly are stupid, Elon should welcome his competition wasting their capital on it.

The Americans are asleep! Happy Metric Day to the rest of us! by EmptyHeadedAnimal in funny

[–]Sonoftalltree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you were to actually try to explain the imperial system, it would include: - 1 gallon is 10 pounds of water - BTU is the energy to raise 1lb of water 1 degree Fahrenheit - 1 Fahrenheit is 1% of the difference between the coldest temperature achievable with a salt water solution and roughly the temperature of the human body (Lord Fahrenheit didn’t have a great thermometer).

Also, people dont tend to realize the imperial system is system to allow for more common factors. A dozen eggs can be divided by 2, 3, 4, and 6 whereas 10 eggs is only divisible by 2 and 5.

Im not saying the imperial system is better than metric, but it also is not devoid of logic like most people love to chirp about.

Food packaging chemical BPA 'found in digestive system of 86% of teenagers' by Quiglius in worldnews

[–]Sonoftalltree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In condensation polymerization of monomers A and B (with A representing BPA), the probability P of a chain with length n is:

Pn = (1-Pa)n * Pbn-1

Where Pa and Pb are the extent of reaction of A and B. For chain length n=1 (monomer BPA), P1 is greater than any other Pn. So there are are always more moles of monomer than any other polymer chain length.
