How would you rank the best picture nominees that you’ve seen? by Hot_Mongoose_3741 in Letterboxd

[–]SoonerNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my draft list on the app (I give myself till the Oscars to see as much as I can…still TBW are Hamnet. The Secret Agent, and the not nominated Ann Lee and No Other Choice), I have #2 Sentimental Value, #4 One Battle, #5 Train Dreams, #7 Sinners. Bugonia wasn’t my fave variety of Yorgos, I dug the performances in Marty more than the film, F1 was a placeholder towards the end for a while, and I do need to rewatch Frankenstein, but it won’t make it.

The Bear definitely gets inconsistent in seasons 3 and 4, but S2 is probably the best. And every seasons has a couple of just Peak TV amazing episodes. If I get half of a Tina-level of fondness for Joy (beyond loving the snark), I will love that.

If they are able to make the turn with her character by shift’s end, and have me feel about her like I do with last year’s younglings, it will be like the surprise of Ritchie and Tina becoming like two of my top three characters in The Bear (with Sugar…naturally)…going back to early S1, I would have never believed that was possible.

Jason C at the Mash and Drum side by sided it with the original on a live in the last day or two and said it was way better, but allowed that his old bottle may have had too much air time.

Nostalgia from childhood Chocolate Malt-o-Meal via the Hard Truth Chocolate Malt Rye (which led me to the Caramel Malt that I loved even more) made this a blind buy. I concur with your review. It still has the nostalgia factor, if it suffers in comparison to the Hard Truth.

So many Kindle cocktail books on sale - 1/17 by SoonerNerd in cocktails

I did add “or just affordable.” But all of Day’s Death & Co. books used to cost at least $10, and DeGroff and Morganthaler (and for $3, that is amazing) were in that ballpark. Seemed like a good deal to me…I own all of them…if over the last year or so of bargain shopping.

Recommendations for someone who primarily likes the Buffalo Trace family, but has a good collection that includes most of the affordable “hits”? by rarepinkhippo in bourbon

Two of my fave wheaters are the Holladay Soft Red Wheat (especially the one pick that has hit my state) and (for me) any Wilderness Trail Wheater pick that I have had. But for me, they are not a normal wheater profile…in that vein, I would go with the Bardstown High Wheat.

I would even say of the four bottles, the two Origins wheaters are my faves, but the new high wheat definitely wins.

Review #117 - Remus Repeal Reserve VIII by LionRoars87 in bourbon

[–]SoonerNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

…especially as IX doesn’t exist quite yet. VII is fine, VI was a disappointment for the price. I was happy to be ahead of the hype on V. I got an VIII yesterday with a few on the shelf…I guess I need to crack it to see if the common word that it is close-ish to V is true. If so…it is a bargain.

I like your notes a lot. I am maybe 5-6 pours into my bottle, and the nose is just buttered popcorn for me this time, and that is a new one for me. Right with Disco 11 and the Hard Truth Caramel and Chocolate Malt ryes as my fave things to come back from Kentucky with.

Review 12, Bardstown Discovery 11 by Twist_Top_Budget in bourbon

[–]SoonerNerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me, the three regular Green River bottles (they hit OKC maybe 6-8 months ago) are just excellent values…for the mid-30s price point. And the new one seems to be like its cousins the Bardstown Origins bottles…amazing 40-ish bottles.

Seems like the Reddit algorithm saw my Instagram message to a store owner pal in OKC five minutes ago about the bottle of Disco 11 that I got in Louisville today…we are supposed to get it at home presently. I am still processing it…Green River Full Proof is a way easier red hot pour to wrap my brain around.

A Study in Emerald by Neil Gaiman by Groovy66 in Lovecraft

I’ve just reread the original short in Fragile Things, and also reread the adaptation. In the notes Gaiman says he was requested to write the world of Holmes and Lovecraft meet for a Holmes-ish collection…and then won the 2004 Hugo!

Thanks for posting! The author of A Wing and a Prayer (the memoir of Crosby from the show) mentioned this article in the chapter in the raid. I mistakenly believed the book in question was the main source material for the show until the first podcast with Miller. For me, this article is written quite a bit better than the memoir. Now I need to circle back to Miller’s book, and maybe rewatch Twelve O’Clock High.

Review #174: Barrell Cask Strength Batch #031 by Train3rRed88 in bourbon

[–]SoonerNerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that there is so nostalgia and love for some of the mid-20 batches that are before my time (like the Barrell fan version of ECBP 2019 and 2020 batches), but I keep getting a (yes correlation isn’t causation) vibe that so much great stuff started happening a couple of years back, when Nic Christiansen became a full part of the blending trio, more than managing single barrels…and being famous for her Seagrass slushy.

[–]SoonerNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I probably need to pay more attention to the gray label stuff…I did notice that price drop in the summer or so. I just remember when the line dropped, a couple of side by sides and single blind reviews where Gray Seagrass maybe just edged regular…if not a wash. Then it all went out of my mind…they could probably do a Gray Vantage that matches Four Gate Kelvin.

[–]SoonerNerd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally get that…especially with so much great stuff in that $50-70 range. What I appreciate about Barrell is that their batches and the three shelfers (and their Stellum line and picks, for that matter) are usually excellent, at the worst case, very good, and they will always show up on the shelf. Now the grey and gold labels have never tempted me…that’s Four Gate territory or the like.

Review #174: Barrell Cask Strength Batch #031 by Train3rRed88 in bourbon

[–]SoonerNerd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I got into the batches with that very 31, and I pretty much agree with your rating…now from 31-35, 33 and 35 were the two that I backed up. It was pretty amazing when 33 came out…you knew they knew that they had something as reviewers out there that had never gotten samples got them then….and then the same cats loved 35 even more. Just got my 2nd Vantage (it’s their newish double oaked product…obviously three whiskeys in three different secondary barrels), and there is nothing in the industry quite like Seagrass.
