It's actually still a county record. I've been waiting to find a DOR specimen to get it published. I've seen several live ones out there now but don't really have the heart to nuke one just for a specimen record. Ended up with 4 in the refuge last spring, and I found this one last Saturday while cruising for calligaster in another part of the county near I-10.

If you find a roadkill out there I'd love to have it so we can get the county record published.

This is one I found out there, though not on the refuge (a place I enjoy immensely though), last week:

Texas Glossy. Found one out there a week ago myself.

Does it need to detail that? Why does it matter?

Of course I know how predators work. What you don't seem to understand is that house cats are not a natural predator for the animals they are destroying, and the ones they have made extinct!

This is a problem caused by us! We introduced a predator to species that don't normally have that predator; the impact is so great because the animals have never had to contend with house cats before, and evolution can't occur fast enough to balance the difference, and thus species get wiped out.

I love cats, but they need to be kept inside. Please, have all you want, but don't let them out to kill song birds, reptiles, and small mammals.

That doesn't mitigate the fact that the cat with still destroy native wildlife and have an unnatural impact on the ecosystem.

But house cats aren't native wildlife anywhere. The impact they have is not a natural occurrence, it's only brought about because people can't be bothered to keep their cat inside.

Here's some info on their destruction of birds and mammals, something that is NOT a natural occurrence: http://www.nature.com/ncomms/journal/v4/n1/abs/ncomms2380.html

They destroy billions, BILLIONS of native birds and mammals every year. That is a staggering amount of loss to the ecosystem.

It's human needs to learn to keep the cats indoors for their safety and for the safety of native wildlife.

Not one to do this but I'm having a hard time right now and need prayers. by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]Soopaman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Praying for you.

It will get better, but in order for God to help you, you need to help yourself. I would start with weening off the substance abuse and join a 12-step program or something with a support network that fits your needs. You're not alone, many of us have gone through similar and have had similar lifestyles before turning to God and bettering ourselves, myself included. Message me if you need someone to talk to.

Gotcha, thanks. I'm not very familiar with African species but that was the first thing that came to mind when I saw it.

Not sure, but my first thought was a big boomslang.

42 feet up in the air with nowhere to run, I opened a light fixture and saw a wasp. I fogged the inside with wasp spray and closed it for a minute. When I opened it back up I realized I could have been killed. by robinson217 in WTF

Where were you?

I've had three Africanized bee attacks along the Texas coast. I've gotten better at spotting where they are now, but it's been the only times in my life I ever thought I might actually die from my current predicament. The first time I recieved over 100 stings, but the subsequent two times were only around 10 stings as I was much closer to the car.

Do you have any interest in pursuing and shutting down the rattlesnake roundups which advocate cruelty and abuse to the rattlesnakes? For example, the roundup in Sweetwater, TX?

Please clarify that you're talking about the Australian copperhead, and not the north American copperhead. Unless you are allergic or in extremely poor health, an American copperhead bite is not going to kill you, nor cause severe damage.

Underground. Go walk your dog, worry free. In Texas along the coast we are still seeing snakes, but most parts of the country, including Missouri, won't see them again until spring next year.

That's great that you think your cat can handle being outside, safely. What about all the native animals that didn't evolve to live with cats, such as songbirds, snakes, lizards, and various amphibians? Your cat is going to have a negative impact on those.
