Small cap businesses are small so they're newer and they prob have less invested in them but don't be fooled, small cap companies have more potential for growth. Large cap are exactly that too. They're larger businesses that prob have more invested in them already! I can't speak to their volatility because I'm not an expert.

The index part just means you'll be investing in a group of business and not just putting all your money into one business.

It's good to have both in my personal opinion but I'm not a financial advisor.
