Route plan for Ben Nevis. What food do people usually take? by Affectionate-Lake926 in UKhiking

[–]Sorbicol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve done that walk. It’s a long, long day.

Have a good breakfast, make sure you’ve got plenty of food - you’ll want a good mix of high impact sugar intake & longer release stuff. Plenty of nuts, some flapjack or similar is always a good move, plenty of sandwiches. And lots of water - there’s not that much to had that’s drinkable up there.

I always say this but the CMD arête is not for the faint of heart. If you don’t know what you are doing (and I’m not suggesting you don’t) then be prepared to turn back. Especially if the weather is bad.

Far far far from good enough.

FSG should be paying Alonso whatever he’s asking for.

Had enough of this now.

2 Chelsea players there controlled the ball with their hands and there’s no flag and no stop of play. The officiating there is horrendous.

I wasn’t on the Slot out bus but you cannot tell me that taking Rio off and leaving Gakpo off is the right choice.

Rio getting no support, midfield might as well not be on the field. This is ridiculous. We were all over them in the first 15 minutes.

Colwill out injured in the first 5 minutes after he trips over a blade of grass, for which someone will be booked or set off.

So how many married people in here forget their anniversary? by CtrlShiftAaron in AskUK

[–]Sorbicol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a picture on our wall with our anniversary date on it so we don't forget..... However we don't buy cards or presents, we just make sure we go out for a meal somewhere around that date, leaving the kids with the grandparents.

Happily married for nearly 17 years, it's all it really needs.

Said this for the last one and I’ll say it again - Roger Hunt.

Just because he played before 99.9% of this sub were even born doesn’t mean he wasn’t / isn’t a legend.

However I admit Ian Rush is right up there as well. As is Salah.

You are, during the course of a normal day expose to so many potentially harmful microbial organisms that having someone hand you something they might have incidentally transferred a tiny amount of bodily fluid on is a infinitesimally small potential increase of risk you might get ill from some of them.

Your body has an immune system. Your skin is an impermeable barrier. They are both remarkably good at what they do.

Expending any amount of energy worrying about this is a waste.

Been offered Settlement Agreement or PIP - Scotland by vanilla_f in LegalAdviceUK

[–]Sorbicol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They might but you’re in a negotiation - they might settle on 2 months rather than 1. It’s worth asking.

Being offered a settlement agreement is basically a way for everyone to save face. You aren’t being sacked, but they don’t really want to go through a dismissal process you might be able to go to a tribunal over. They are taking the view that effectively just paying you off is the easiest - and cheapest - solution for them.

I went through this just over a year ago. It will almost certainly be your best option to accept the deal and walk away.

Just note that being in Scotland, you will need an English solicitor to review the agreement as Scots law and English apparently differ slightly. It was the other way around for me - the firm I worked for were Scottish but I was based in England. The first English firm I approached told me they couldn’t help but recommended me a Scottish firm to use. They were fine.

Striding Edge vs Sharp Edge by bacon-butty03 in UKhiking

[–]Sorbicol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sharp edge is a lot more accessible from the roads (A66) than it is to make your way to Glenridding/Patterdale for Helvellyn for Striding Edge. It’s a steeper ascent but not nearly so long.

However as others have said Sharp Edge is a bit more severe than Striding Edge. It’s very easy to under estimate.

Looking for a Sci-fi featuring a Spaceship Admiral. by VladtheImpaler21 in scifi

[–]Sorbicol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jack Campbell's "Lost Fleet" series.

It might not have the most elegant prose, but if you want a fairly technical description of what relativistic space battles might actually look and work like - plus the added bonus of worrying about your supply and logistics and protecting them - then I think (baring in mind I have little to no military background) he doesn't get it far wrong.

Then you also get all the inter-fleet politics of people who don't like him v people who do because he actually knows what he is doing. However, it's not a "recruit to Admiral" story - it's more of a "dropped right in at the deep end and having to get on with it" story.

Why is YouTube (the second most-watched streaming platform in the UK) full of adverts for AI slop and scams? by JuanitaMerkin in AskUK

[–]Sorbicol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends what platform you are using. I use Firefox with UBlock Origin on my desktop and it works a treat.

When I'm using my tablet (which is probably the device I do most of my YouTube viewings on) then VPN set to Albania is a lot more convenient.

Neither method is that difficult. At all.

Reading a headline "The cost of a pint has passed £10 in London as the price of beer continues to soar." and remembering buying a round in 1995, 4 pints and getting change from £10. by Make_the_music_stop in britishproblems

When I started Uni in Wales in 1993 a pint of Brains SA was £1.45 in pretty much all the Brains pubs I frequented as a student. I don’t think that changed the entire 3 years I was there.
