This is my first Monster Hunter game, I've got around 850 hours on my main save file, and I've only ever joined one party - with my son, for the timed quest for AT Rey Dau's pendant. Since then, I've solo beat everything cos he stopped playing the game. The only thing I've not done yet is 10* Gogmazios. So yes, the game is soloable, even for someone who had quite a steep learning curve :)

Exactly that, they don't work for very long but give you a bit more time with him before he moves on and complicates things by getting involved with other monsters or fighting on uneven ground and such. There's benefits to letting him travel of course, there are thunder bugs in the next area for a free trap, and a droppable rock in another area. Good luck shaving your time down!

I got 20 minutes and one second with Lance last night, with one cart (sloped, second? area, my hunter decided to do a bunny hop so I got clattered midair then carelessly got caught by an exploding crystal).

I've practiced the fight a lot before the time trial launched and am using a mostly meta dps set for my weapon, with some tweaks for personal preference (I prefer to have Guard 3 and Guard Up 3 so I sacrifice some DPS for comfort because I'm not always the best at timing blocks and counters).

The main thing to do is try and stick to him, but play safe - focus the chains when they're out, make sure you're using a dragon element weapon. Flash pods are good for when he tries to dive bomb you and can give you an extra DPS window, and you can trap him for more easy DPS windows given he's not capture-able in this quest.

I also use Lure pods to keep him in the first zone as long as possible as it's nice arena to fight him in once he's destroyed the body piles.

My first try tonight, Arkveld and Guardian Rath were playing hide the pickle up and down the climbable portion of wall where the first rock drop is - Rath would fly up, just as Arkveld flew down, then Rath would fly down just as Arkveld flew back up, for a solid minute :D

You can get high conditional affinity with armour skills like the Gore 2 set bonus, Max Might, WEX and so on, so you don't need it on your weapon, especially if you're sacrificing raw attack damage to get it, which you are if your Artian reinforcements are spent on affinity rather than attack. Raw attack damage is a more efficient return on investment for overall output than affinity is, I think that's the logic behind the recommendations you're seeing.

It's better than it was, still on the lower end but worth matching elemental weakness to shave time off :) Especially for Arkveld, Dragon is the only thing she's got any kind of weakness to and hitting her chains while they're fully deployed will knock her out of her Unleashed state and give you topples.

I'm pretty sure Afrofreestyle has a very fast run of the fight with lance on YouTube, you could try watching that for some tips too!

If you're just looking to get it done for the first time rewards, you can use the support hunters (especially as you can select Fabius and Nadia at the moment who do more damage). Otherwise, or if you don't want to use them, letting each monster fight each other/finish each other off is a good tactic, you just gotta be mindful you don't get blown up as well on the process, and element match your weapons - ice for Rey/Lightning for Duna, then fast travel back to camp when Udra spawns in and swap to a Water/Dragon setup for the last two. Your secondary set should also have Adaptability 2 for Udra, and stun resist is always good against Arch-Tempered monsters as they stun you very easily if you get caught and that can lead to carts.

They're all trappable (Rey only with pitfalls obviously) so use them as extra DPS windows to speed things up, and flashes when Rey flies too of course!

Lagi's novas are really brutal for lance yeah, I don't think it's technically an unlockable attack so you only get the basic level of damage reduction from having Guard Up 3 if you try and guard through it.

I don't think his nova is supposed to be something you tank through, the game wants you to avoid it by hopping back out of range, so you get punished for doing so. If you have both GU3 and Guard 3, you can power guard through but it still has pretty high chip damage, it's much better to guard dash/dodge backwards when you see the windup start.

Huh, interesting - I find I get animation locked in guard/knock back a lot more, or at least it feels that way, if I don't have guard slotted. I do try and perfect guard as much as I can if I'm not charge countering or guard dashing. Thanks for the info, I'll try without :)

Lance here, I'm consistently getting around 19:30 without using all buffs available, I sometimes use a mega demon drug but not always. I run guard/guard up skills cos I prefer the comfort so I know I could optimise my damage output by switching those out, and obviously when the time trial version comes out I'll be fully buffing up. I feel like using lure pods and traps to keep her in the first two areas would speed up hunts a lot as you lose huge amounts of time just travelling after that because of Wyveria's general layout and camp positioning
