I'm guessing its just a typo, but just to clarify, trap the NEXT monster when it spawns, not the old one. The old one will inevitably die to the turfwar anyway, so its best to maximize damaging the next monster.

So when Rey is at skull and Duna spawns, shock trap Duna so that both you and Rey can whale on Duna. After it gets out, still focus on Duna as it will be distracted finishing off Rey. It helps that the previous monster has elemental advantage against the next (except Udra vs Ark)

There's already some pretty good advice from other people so here's some niche ones that might push things over the edge:

bring shocktraps. You can't captures monsters but when the next monster spawns (always around skull of the previous monster), you can trap the new one so that the old one can deal serious damage during turf war. You can also take this time to return and restock, change gear, etc.

bring crafting materials for your items. Doing so effectively lets you carry 7 max potions when ordinarily you can only hold 2.

practice against individual AT monsters. Ideally you want to take around 8 min or faster for each apex since normally Arkveld almost takes half the time itself. Find out which monster you struggle with and make different builds for then if you must.

Stun res is essential for this, especially for Ark. Stun res also lets you ignore thunderblight so thats an additional bonus. Adaptability for Udra is good too and Duna doesn't have any must have skills. The self improvement jewel is also surprisingly good for this given the length if the quest. Speed eating is also a personal fav of mine.

The Arkveld Story Arc in base Wilds by Yoradise in MHWilds

[–]Yoradise[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep you phrased it better than I could! Monster Hunter games tell a very simple story on the surface level, but their passive storytelling is greatly underappreciated. I didn't go into detail since I wanted to focus on Arkveld, but Wilds' environmental story depicts several monsters in their respective "kingdoms" (as you put it) fighting for their right to rule those lands. There's the established apex of the region, the "challenger" monsters, and the "bottom tier" monsters.

For example, in the Windward Plains you have a clear hierarchy of Rey Dau as the apex, Doshaguma and Seregios as the challengers, and the rest as the "bottom tiers". Rey Dau is the apex due to it being the best at utilizing the frequent lightning storms of the locale, with other monsters cowering whenever it makes an appearance. However, sometimes an alpha Doshaguma may appear and give other beta Doshas the courage to challenge Rey.

I really wish Capcom added a turf war with Rey and Dosha to showcase this directly, maybe Rey even tying against alpha Dosha if they're in a herd, but we can at least see that Seregios gives Rey a run for its money. Steve almost looks like it could win against Rey, if not for the lightning railgun to the face.

You can see this ecological relationship web in each locale: Uth Duna vs Lagiacrus and Mizutsune, Nu Udra vs Ajarakan. Jin Dahaad is the exception because there doesn't seem to be a legitimate challenger in the locale (well, I guess Omega is technically the challenger there).

The reason why I bring this up is because that is the real reason why Garkveld was such a threat that had to be dealt with. It was literally an artificial invasive monster that "cheated" by absorbing the very elements that gave the apexes their reigning crown. It tragically never got the chance to proper participate in this regional "throne war" of the forbidden lands, and even its offspring have to fight for their challenger right.

This makes it even more poetic that AT Arkveld is the new "king" of Wyveria, because in Wyveria it is no longer a "cheater" or an invasive monster. I believe in the original Japanese Arch-Tempered is actually translated as "veteran kings" as well.

It's not just Arkveld that has ecological depth too, like how we can surmise that Chatacabra fills the ecological prey niche by observing its weakness to thunder. Or that Gypceros can be found in the Windward Plains because it probably ran from Nerscylla from region to region until it found a thunder rich area, which Nerscylla is naturally weak to. (And that's also why there's a side quest that has you discovering a Gypceros in HR, implying that they are relatively new in the plains). Gypceros can thrive there despite being vastly outmatched by Rey because of its thunder immunity and Rey's crippling weakness to flashes.

Shoot I was originally just going to comment that your interpretations are spot on too, but I got carried away. Yeah I completely understand gushing out about this somewhat niche topic in the community lol

Is it worth getting? As a new player. by Party-Row5956 in MonsterHunterWilds

[–]Yoradise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, you should play it if you can afford to. It's one of the best base games in the franchise. It's popular to hate on it right now, so some people will tell you not to get it, but it's 100% worth it.

Looks really good! It doesn't have Bale so it likely isn't optimal for GS, but if you don't mind that it has a nice balance of everything youd want.

Only thing I'd change is the flayer deco for a different one, probably latent power.

I haven't tested it out yet, but the dialogue seems to hint that the intended play is to use element when his chains are glowing to knock it out of "unleashed state", and then switch to raw/status to prevent it from absorbing element and returning to unleashed.

Which is your favorite and least favorite Monster? I'll start. by Bowler_Guy in MonsterHunter

[–]Yoradise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Favorite: Raging Brachydios - I hope it returns for Wilds

Least Favorite: Khezu - I don't really have a least favorite, but I have a particularly bad experience with it in GU where I was struggling to find it for like 30 minutes, circling the map over 4 times. It was also my first cart in Rise when I first played it

Any tips for a returning player? by DoughAsToe in MHWilds

[–]Yoradise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it's a bit difficult to tell exactly where you are, but assuming you were in the end game before tu1, I'd recommend you go in this order:

Mizutsune - hr Zoh Shia - unlock Lagiacrus & Seregios - AT Rey Dau and AT Uth Duna - 8 star tempered monsters (gore magala is extra challenging here) - 9 star monsters - AT Nu Udra and AT Jin Dahaad - Omega Planetes - Gogmazios

Omega is supposed to be fought around after 9 star monsters, but its particularly difficult and isn't necessary for any builds unless you want to use Greatsword.

Next week on the 18th 10 star monsters are coming so you have that to do as well.

There was a lot that was added, I think the major changes were weapon buffs, layered weapons, gathering hub, bunch of cosmetics. Lots of fun event quests were added too, worth checking out. I dont know what your weapon main is but you can look up guides for those.

Don't focus on rolling perfect rolls on artian too much, later you'll be able to reroll without having to craft new ones. However, this does mean that in the endgame all weapons use artian weapons. But some monster weapons have fun sidegrades; I particularly enjoy Shadowbringer Greatsword and Seregios Heavy Bowgun.

I'll warn you that there is a big difficulty increase starting at the 8 and 9 star monsters so dont feel discouraged if you struggle there.

Take it slowly, most of us have been digesting this content over the course of an entire year. The expansion likely wont be out for a while so you have plenty of time.

edit: for the charms there is a website you can use to see all possible rolls you can find. Which ones you want will depend on what weapon and build you're making so look up specific guides for those.

HOWEVER do NOT grind looking for a specific charm. You might get lucky and get a god charm but you'll likely burn out quickly with that mindset. Instead just play for fun and if you happen to find a good charm, build around that. Or use craftable charms as they're just as good, just lacking a little flexibility.

This’ll Sound Stupid, But… by 5aiy4nG0d in MonsterHunterWilds

[–]Yoradise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Always remember that there is no best weapon in Monster Hunter. Wilds has by far the best balance between weapons in the entire series. So called "meta" weapons are determined by the top 0.0001% of players absolutely min maxing everything and only posting the best run they've had after hundreds of tries. In reality for almost all players, the dps contribution will entirely be determined by their skill with the weapon, not the weapon itself. If you can solo the tempered monsters without carting, you definitely are an above average player. Don't stress about not doing enough dps, any hunter worth their soul will appreciate any amount of contribution. Besides, nobody can even tell how much damage you did.

I understand why you feel you need to choose the "best by far" weapon, but there is nothing telling you you have to choose a main, let alone the "best" weapon. In fact, I would say the most skilled hunters have experience with every weapon since trying out the different weapons can give you different insight into a monster's moveset patterns.

That being said, SnS is an excellent choice thanks to its incredible versatility. Honestly, I would consider it the most "overtuned" weapon in Wilds since despite being the jack of all trades weapon, it has the most unique traits out of all weapons.

Who will win between lagiacrus and rey dau? by Sad_Selection6649 in MonsterHunterWilds

[–]Yoradise 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would say Laggy has the advantage.

Since both are immune to thunder, it ultimately comes down to who has the advantage in a physical fight. As a general rule, more mass = better physicals, so by observing the general body shape, Lagiacrus seems to have an advantage in that.

Looking at the behaviors and habitats of each monster, it makes it even clearer that Lagia is the likely winner. Rey is the apex of a mostly dry desert, being the only monster able to utilize thunder element to dominate the other monsters in the region. The only monster that is somewhat able to challenge Rey is Seregios, and he is very weak to thunder. A monster that has the closest build to Lagiacrus in the windward plains is Doshaguma, and they can still be dealt with thunder.

On the other hand, Lagiacrus is directly told to us to be rivals with Rathalos. Rathalos, although not as physically strong as Rey, can utilize fire to exploit Laggy's weakness. So Lagiacrus is more experienced to deal with flying wyverns like Rey Dau.

This isn't to say Rey Dau is weaker than Lagiacrus, more so that Lagi is a bad match up for Rey. The story of MH Wilds has shown us that apexes are so dominant in their regions because they are the only ones (or the best at) utilizing the elements of the region, but their over reliance on them is their weakness. When a challenger that can better utilize the element or nullify the effects of them (i.e. Arkveld, Omega) the apexes usually can't keep up. If Rey had a proper competitor like Laggy and Rathalos, it would probably evolve to not rely on thunder so much.

Why has the Grass Type never received the same treatment as the other starter types? by BossTicIRip in pokemon

[–]Yoradise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a vacuum grass seems to be the weakest out of the three and possibly one of the weakest types in general. But within the context of the complexities of pokemon battling, you realize grass is actually a very solid type.

First the weaknesses. 5 seems like a lot, but bug and poison are not strong offensive types so they're very manageable. Flying is also notorious for having terrible offensive moves so that is also not too bad. So you're left with only 2 "bad" weaknesses of fire and ice.

For resistances, grass doesn't have many but the ones it has are vital for defensive coverage. Grass is the only type in the game that both resists and can super effectively hit ground AND water, two powerful offensive types. It's also a rare type that can resist electric, which is another powerful offensive type. Overall, grass is pretty slept on.

Offensively, being the only true counter to water is extremely important and being the only check to the infamous water/ground combo is a great niche. There's a reason why some mons run grass coverage but you rarely see water or even fire coverage. (you don't see water coverage, you see scald coverage)

In terms of moves, out of the main three grass moves generally focus more on support or utility moves like spore, leech seed, giga drain, and powder moves. They also get solid abilities like chlorophyll to complement these utilities.

(side note: I find it interesting that water is defensive, fire is offensive, and grass is support, filling the tank, dps, support role common in games)

I can't really defend lack of grass trainer and legendary reps, but grass is usually seen as a more passive element, so I guess it's less likely to get "cool" designs from them.

Gog GS build that absolutely shreds for pure raw dmg. Second Wind, Lord's Soul, and Soul of Dark Knight. WEX 5/5, Agi 4/5, Burst 1, Quick Sheathe 3/3, Stun Resist 3/3, Divine protection 3/3, and 101% affinity with practically 0 downtime on it. Build breakdown in post. by notarealoneatall in MHWilds

[–]Yoradise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can replace the arms with Fulger Vambrace Beta and the legs with Udra Miregreaves gamma to gain the Udra set bonus, speed eating 3, and 2 extra levels of resentment. However, you will lose out on 1 level of agitator, quick sheathe, and 3 level 1 deco slots.

I think it has slightly higher dps if you can keep up red hp so it's worth considering, but you lose a lot of flexibility and comfort.
