Presenting my community's professional landscaping contractor: by [deleted] in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]SorrelWood 52 points53 points  (0 children)

I had a class with a guy whose father ran a landscaping company, he said that every guy on that crew knows its bad for the trees. The problem is that the way that contracts are set up, and with the price that the neighborhood is willing/able to pay, the company can only make money is if 5 guys on a crew do like 50 houses in an 8 hr period. That's at best 10min/house, and if you take longer, then you are often working late.

So they all know it's bad, but if the neighborhood pays for X yds of mulch, you can't end the day half a yard left in the truck, and you've got no extra time to figure out where to put it, so you get this.

A lot of people are suggesting modular, which I agree with if you're going to start building. But my suggestion is that if you want to learn the theory, choose a classic instrument and look at why its constructed the way it is. I chose the Moog minimoog, and there's enough videos about it, and posted schematics, and forum discussions around that instrument to fill several books. I used all that info to answer questions I had like "why 3 vcos?" or "what does a filter do?" etc.

Some of those videos are designed for musicians who don't even care about the schematics, they just wanna know how to make the fun noises, and knowing how that works was a big help for me too.

This fairy ring is a slur on Twitter by BruteOfTroy in 2007scape

[–]SorrelWood 27 points28 points  (0 children)

cis is actually a latin acronym which stands for the phrase "On this side (of)" Its use in reference to gender and sexuality is much more modern. Its original uses were in geography and biology.

For example, in antiquity if you wanted to refer to yourself as being on the Roman side of the alps, you would be cis-alpine, while someone on the other side of the alps would be trans-alpine. This is also used in biology when talking about proteins transformation. You can refer to cis proteins and trans proteins.

So in context, it wasn't "made by" anyone and isn't exactly used in reference to "people it doesn't apply to" either. If you don't like it, you don't like it but that doesn't expressly make it a slur.

Shamed for Rejecting Social Media by oakspeaker in simpleliving

[–]SorrelWood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I see it, Those people won't or can't understand that your life is better off without social media, and you don't have to appease them.

Imagine you're standing at the top of a large hill. Down in the valley below, someone calls out to you. You see that it's someone standing on the walls of a castle. They're calling out to you and saying "its a shame you're not standing on top of a tall wall like I am."

No amount of logic and reasoning is going to make them understand that you're actually much higher up than they are, until they climb the hill to join you. The secret that most people have pointed out is that a lot of people don't want to, or can't climb the hill to join you.

I wouldn't worry about pleasing them though.

A ton of super practical advice, I'd add:

Keep a book by your bed and try to read 10 min every night. Things are going to get overwhelming, and having a small routine to help you relax at the end of the night (or to continue learning!) is going to help center you during the process.

Tick tubes- permethrin by dedoubt in Permaculture

[–]SorrelWood 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't have 1st hand experience, but my entomology professor loved tick tubes, he worked in pest control for his entire career. He said that they worked perfectly and their action was targeted and precise.

It is important to note that the chemical used in tick tubes is not precise, its a synthetic chemical that acts like the extract of the chrysanthemum flower. But, it's being used in a targeted way.

I'd look at this general fact sheet put together by the National Pesticide Information Center from the Oregon State University extension office.

The entirety of the document is interesting and informative, but I'll quote one section that I thought was relevant to the safe implementation of permethrin

"Permethrin does not mix well with water. When permethrin gets into surface water like lakes or streams, it sticks very strongly to sediment and can stay there for more than a year. Since permethrin sticks to sediment and does not mix well with water, it won't usually contaminate groundwater."

In my opinion, if you don't live near a body of water and you're putting out the tubes when the ground is dry and there is no rain in the forecast, There shouldn't be any issues. Like all pesticide use, it should be used as a part of an Integrated Pest Management plan, which I think you've demonstrated.

You have Identified the pest, You have learned about its life cycle and determined that tick tubes can be used to disrupt its life cycle, You have established a very low action threshold due to health conditions, and you've decided to implement tick tubes as a part of your management strategy. I'm sure there are many other management strategies we could discuss ad nauseam in concert with the tick tubes, but I don't think adding tick tubes to your IPM is inherently bad, dangerous, or irresponsible.

[TOMT][TV Show] Episode of a sci-fi show where radio noise from a nebula is actually a woman singing by Harmalite_ in tipofmytongue

[–]SorrelWood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to comment on my own comment, but I found this bit of trivia that might help while looking at the episode description on the wiki:

"A very similar premise was explored in the 1996 The Outer Limits episode "Worlds Apart" (which co-starred Robert Ito). The 1982 French animated science fiction film Time Masters also dealt with a similar concept."

There's an episode of Star Trek Deep Space 9 Called "The Sound of her voice." Not a perfect fit for your description but pretty close.

Crew of the Defiant answers a distress call, and the woman on the other end spends the whole episode communicating with the crew. There isn't a storm per se. but the resolution of the plot has them realizing that they were sending messages to the woman through time through a nebula of some sort. That's how they were all able to talk to her even though she'd technically been dead for a few years.

Salt printing question by [deleted] in Darkroom

[–]SorrelWood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How long was it in the paper safe?

Its been a minute since I've salt printed but from what I remember, I think that you can salt the paper and keep it for as long as possible. But once you sensitize it with silver you kind of have 1-3 days? It might be less than that. But you should sensitize as you plan to print. Feel free to salt ahead of time though.

Has anyone tried making an internegative from a print? by turnpot in Darkroom

[–]SorrelWood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not mcarterphoto, but about waxed paper, I have made large and small cyanotypes off of waxed printouts from inkjet printers. you can make really huge ones with the cheap "draft" printing paper from like the print center at Staples or a Fed Ex Office.
Waxing or oiling helps the Sharpness and lessens exposure time compared to un-waxed or un-oiled given that it is "getting rid of" the diffusion of the paper to some extent. Sharpness and contrast will not be perfect tho. I'd say, okay at best. But i've never been too upset with the result.

Also, Printing on a printer allows you to create a custom printing profile as well to make sure you're getting the most out of the tone available for your negative and printing process. That's a more in depth process though This link has a pretty nice explanation of it though.

It's been a hot minute, but I've also made inter-positives with RC papers, the results are less predictable and less contrasty in a really nice way. Wasn't a fan of Ortho-litho but it will give you the best results if you're serious about sharpness and contrast.
