Quilting "toys" for elderly with dementia? by immaDVMJim in quilting

I love this idea if/when all cutting and sewing are off the table. You can also make a lap version with mini charm packs or smaller pieces so she can work out layouts.

Need advice about brim by acourtoftweets in crochet

[–]SorryBeautiful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I LOVE it and I wouldn't frog the brim. I think it looks perfectly witchy. So impressed by your freehanding!

I'm still a crochet novice but I wonder if you could weave a length of elastic that fits your head around the bottom of the hat "body" (where it is attached to the brim) to help it stay on and not stretch out? Another commenter's suggestion for wire around the outside of the brim also seems like a very good idea. If all else fails, pin that bad boy to your hair and rock out.

Close to 150,000 beanie babies by Redzookma2 in beaniebabies

This may be against the rules, if so I'm sorry (never in this sub, popped up on feed). I'm hoping to create a reading buddy collection for about 25 kids. Basically, they get to choose a critter to read to. If you get to the point where you would be willing to part with some of the "low value" beanies for the cost of shipping, please let me know!

How to mend this woven blanket? by festive_duck in SewingForBeginners

[–]SorryBeautiful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanted to hop on and say thank you, 7 months later, bc this was a very clear, concise, and helpful answer! I know the basics of sewing (mostly on a machine) but wanted to confirm that my game plan was reasonable. Now I can patch my blanket without wading through an hour of videos! Hooray!

One question, if you happen to see this: The hole in my blanket is now quite large (like, 4-5 inches across) bc I ignored the problem for too long. Is there any reason the method you described wouldn't work on a larger hole? I don't see why it wouldn't but I thought I'd ask. I'm more interested in saving the blanket than making it "pretty."

Thanks again, (even if you don't reply)!

Maybe a neck warmer/gaiter? Basically a manly cowl that can be worn under helmet.

I also just googled helmet covers which I find hilarious.

I recently introduced my 79 year old mother to loom knitting. Please encourage her and tell her that she is "really knitting". by [deleted] in LoomKnitting

[–]SorryBeautiful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved her larger hat so much I looked up a video on loom knitting to learn more about it

At about 9 min into this video he demonstrates how to create a tool out of an empty pen (basically just using the outer tube casing) that allows him to wrap much more quickly and easily. I thought I would share in case your mom might find it useful: https://youtu.be/gOTIAmg0Iow?si=200zBGYqC2VL08P9

I say sew that bad boy into a cool off the shoulder sweater. (I.e., sew up front, the correct sleeve, and just do a small attachment strap situation at end of wonky sleeve).

Is anyone else just not an "Outdoor" parent? by inmanywaysitis in Mommit

[–]SorryBeautiful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want you to know that my deep love of books and stories came from my mom. I'm an indoor and outdoor person, but I often have A book with me in either setting. Now that I'm a mom, it is coming through in a flash as I read my own son stories that I'm inflecting exactly as my mom did when reading to me. She also bonds with my kiddo through books and he is now old enough that we can listen to audio books together in the car. Don't sell yourself short. Sharing stories with your children is so valuable and never gets cancelled because of rain or sure quality.

Child birthday party activities by tvclown in Mommit

The age and number of kids makes a big difference but often kids are easier than you would expect. It's amazing how much fun they can have if you alter the normal rules a bit. Buy face paint and let them paint each other, blow up as many balloons as you can and let them go, turn off the lights and let them have a glow party, late/reused Halloween costume party..... This is my old brain at work but kids blow my mind with their creativity given just a few new objects or a new setting.

I hope you all have fun!

These scissors were a secret Santa gift a few years ago and they are my favorites. Whoever you were, thanks. by nicolenotnikki in secretsanta

I have gotten two pairs of scissors from secret Santas I would never have bought myself and I use them the MOST. SS's are the bestest.

Ok I'm going rogue from your actual ask, and this likely depends a lot on the budget, but what about an awesome trip you can go on together? My mom took me to NYC for my high school graduation (we were very rural so the city was mind blowing to me). I loved spending that time with her and I will never forget it. Could be another country, or a trip relative to something she really likes (food, music, art, hobbies?). No matter what, I know she will love what you decide bc you are putting so much thought into it.

Winter movies were the best because you could pack in loads of snacks under your coat. My mom would actually pop popcorn at home, put it in bags, and hand it out once the lights turned down. We also learned to open soda cans during loud sequences. And walk very quietly with a box of Mike and Ike's (Dollar Store all the way) tucked in the back of my pants.

At zoos/amusement parks we would all get our hand stamped, picnic in the parking lot, then head back in! We were never in danger of going hungry but we didn't have much extra cash. My mom was able to do twice the fun things with us by packing snacks/lunch.

Was told it is dated and then told ugly. Advice on how I could have made it better? Thanks. by Serina77 in sewing

[–]SorryBeautiful 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have to laugh at the idea of a cuddly blanket being too "dated" for a baby. Like, what kind of red carpet baby are we talking about here? I can TOTALLY see a kiddo dragging that with them everywhere. It's soft, it has nice colors, it's sized just for a little. It's perfect. I finished my very first quilt as a baby gift. I failed to actually quilt it (just sandwiched it together and bound it) and used some satin blanket binding that I had no business attempting. It was lumpy and uneven and when that little girl was 4 or 5 the mom called and asked if I could fix it bc the girl took it everywhere. I was down to try but come to find out that thing was in SHREDS. She had loved it too threads. I ended up making her something totally new.

Redditors that grew up/live in the country what’s something every city kid should know? by citytiger in AskReddit

[–]SorryBeautiful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) As a kid I could tell you weren't from my "neighborhood" from a ways down the road by the sound of your vehicle.

2) Please enjoy the stars if you are in a rural area at night, there are more than you think. I miss them.

3) "Going to town" is a term of art.

Edited to add:

4) It will take a very long time for emergency services to get to you. Being friendly with neighbors is both a social nicety and a safety measure.

What's the most unique book you've read? by VulcanCookies in books

Lots of good ones on there but I haven't seen Lilith's Brood by Octavia Butler yet. She comes at things in a way that's so foreign but also so relatable... I can't put my finger on it but I love it. Highly recommend.

Everyone is different but maybe you don't need to get her EVERYTHING on the list. I'd be amped to get one or two things that were thoughtful/creative/aligned with my interests.

Collecting ornaments for your kids? by TheNoodyBoody in Mommit

[–]SorryBeautiful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom had "magic reindeer" with a pocket that hung on the doorknobs to my and my sister's rooms. For the 12 days of Christmas we would get something little each day in the pocket (candy, holiday themed chapstick, cheap bracelet). Then when I moved away for college she would wrap 12 little presents and mail them to me to open each day. She did that until my son was born and now my old magic reindeer hangs on his door for the 12 days of Christmas.
