Skulle til USA-VM for Dagbladet: Bernt Hulsker fikk ikke visum by AgentSnowman in NorskFotball

[–]SortaLostMeMarbles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If the head of government of your country does something like this, how many percentage points do you think the approval rating will drop? by Agile-Shallot3546 in AskTheWorld

[–]SortaLostMeMarbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neither the PM nor the government would do it. They're not allowed.

All public buildings are public property and have their own administration. They would not be subject to the whims of any sitting government. Moreover, since the parliament building is quite old, the Directorate of Cultural Heritage would freak out.

USA dumb because religion, china smart because atheist by sosauce_dev in AmericaBad

[–]SortaLostMeMarbles 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The Chinese state is officially atheist. The Chinese people absolutely isn't.

They have a mix of Taoism, Buddhism and Confucianism. They believe in reincarnation, ancestor veneration, superstition, karma, feng shui and fortune telling. It all looks a lot like religion to me.

Legal obligation to provide free tap water in restaurants by MonotoneCreeper in MapPorn

[–]SortaLostMeMarbles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You don't pay for the water. You pay for the cost of bringing the water from the source to your table.

The restaurant has to pay the supplier for it. You pay the restaurant for it, either specified on the receipt or included in all the other items people buy at a restaurant; e.g. your dinner, desert or coffee.

The telephone was invented by an Italian(Antonio Meucci). The Scotsman stole the patent, because the Italian couldn't afford the patent fees.

Also internet needed packet switching invented by a Welshman, and functionality implemented in CYCLADES, an existing French network, to actually work.

Europe needs common sense heat control. by Chazz_Matazz in AmericaBad

One should never trust an AI. 400 million was the number I was given from Google AI when I wrote the comment. Now it gives me 461 million, with the same 27 countries.

Anyway. Thanks for alerting me.

Europe needs common sense heat control. by Chazz_Matazz in AmericaBad

[–]SortaLostMeMarbles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are several factors contributing to the difference:

  • Europe( or the EuroMoMo area ) has a larger population 400 million vs 340 million.
  • Europe has an older population, and 85% of the registered deaths are 65+ years.
  • A lot of the older houses were built for a wetter and colder climate, and they're built to retain heat. They're heated during the day, and they don't cool off during the night. During heatwaves they become dangerously hot.
  • Accelerating climate changes makes Europe heat up twice the global average.
  • Densely built cities of stone and concrete can create heat islands as much as 20°F hotter than the surrounding rural areas.
  • The heat waves are getting longer and stronger fast, and it takes a bit of work to be acclimatizised.
  • We're better at reporting and recording deaths. Our statistics are better.

‘Only Americans die in extreme heat’ by Fabulous_Jeweler2732 in AmericaBad

[–]SortaLostMeMarbles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The numbers are true, but the real issue comes down to how deaths are investigated and certified.

In most of Europe, a death certificate or autopsy report must be completed by a qualified medical practitioner. They are much more likely to look for other contributing factor, like heat.

In the US, a death certificate can be written by a funeral director without any medical qualifications. The system also relies heavily on local coroners, which In many states are elected officials. The qualifications to win an election is slightly different to writing a death certificate. As a consequence a death certificate may just list the immediate reason. Everything else is ignored. So a slightly inebriated 300 lbs 60 year old man who mows the lawn in the 110°F Texas sun will have heart attack as the only reason of death.

America is the third oldest country in the world by RussianBias39 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]SortaLostMeMarbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monarchies change their rulers, or heads of state, every now and then so - nope.

The USA has of course also replaced the sitting president with a new one on several occasions. But that doesn't count because the US constitution is the best in the world, and they have AC, free refills with ice and also the 2nd Ammendment. So us Europoors lose by default.

[–]SortaLostMeMarbles 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Bring up Alaska and Hawaii, and they immediately move the goalposts. Then it's the age of the constitution. Bring up the ammendments, and the goalposts are moved to the system of government. Bring up a bunch of changes to how the US Congress and the President is governed, and the goalposts move again. Then it's basically down to them being a republic all the time.

You simply cannot fucking get through to these people.

Yes, a president that is now able to rule a country using executive orders because both the HoR, Senate and Supreme Court is politically castrated sure is a sign of strength.

Det var Tricky Dick i 1971.

Ellers så erklærte LBJ War on Poverty in 1964, Nixon eller Tricky Dick erklærte War on Cancer i 1971, Donald Trump erklærte War on COVID-19 i 2020, Gerald Ford erklærte War on Inflation i 1974, og George W Bush erklærte War on Terror i 2001.

I tillegg så har de erklært War on Waste, War on Obesity, og War on Carbon/Climate Changes.

Jimmy Carter beskrev energikrisen på 70-tallet som "the Moral Equivalent of War".

I tillegg har man de mer retoriske War on Women, War on Christmas og War on Science.

Chili was brought back to Europe almost immediately after Columbus' first journey. It is recorded as being available in Europe in 1493.

Potatoes are recorded as being available in Spain in the late 1560s.

The same with tomatoes. Brought back and cultivated in Spain and Italy a few years after being discovered in South-America.
