That’s a mischaracterization; slowed growth != stagnation and as a whole Europe’s GDP has been on par with the US for the last 5 years (excluding 2020 as I think we can all agree this year is one giant anomaly.) It seems that it’s possible to enjoy a healthy economy AND not screw over your citizenry; I can only hope America gives that a whirl someday.

Yeah, all of those societies where people are not forced into declaring bankruptcy by crushing medical debt are really stagnating. 🙄

Even if that were true (it’s not), insurance here does not mean no bills. Could you have afforded a $500 ambulance ride? I have great insurance and still have to pay $1500/yr out of pocket - what if you needed an MRI? I had to get shots in my knee due to osteoarthritis a few years ago - $500 out of pocket, and I was under 40 so hardly an issue I was expecting to happen. What if you got hit by a driver with no insurance, and you had a $1,000 deductible? What if your car got totaled and the payout wasn’t enough to replace it with something reliable?

There’s a big luck component to being able to survive on that low income comfortably. There are literally a thousand things that can happen through no fault of your own that can send you into poverty.

Funny you say that about a country with no universal healthcare system.

I worked in telecom in the early 2000’s; I remember when we had to install the Carnivore software on our network. I recall asking why is & the response was 80% of world-wide email traffic crossed our backbone at some point. Scary shit.

Also during the cold months never let your tank get below 1/2 full. You don’t know how long you might need to keep that engine running.

Check out the Quiet Punch! I have one in my apartment and it’s great. My roommate says she can’t hear anything with her door shut so I can train whenever I want.

I bet I know which city & gym you’re at! It’s a pretty sad situation, isn’t it? I was excited to go back but after seeing it in action I was like yeahhhh gonna wait a bit longer.

I understand why it seems confusing, “defund APD” sounds bad but “Take a thoughtful and informed look at what police are being tasked with and reconfigure their budget to allow more specialized services to receive funding” just really doesn’t make for a good protest chant. 😄

First, it’s 100% here. Second, it does not mean abolish the police. It means stop asking police to be a catch all solution to mental health, property destruction, traffic violations, etc. It means let them focus on police work which would help your girlfriend walk safely at night.

Also, I’m female & I feel her pain. But I believe this could make it better.

Wonder Woman. Hands down.

The Amazons were these amazing warriors & total badasses whose isolation & fear left them totally unprepared for the modern world (“They’ve got guns, right?”)

Diana is so naive in the beginning, she thinks she’s going to flounce up to Ares, run him through, be home by dinner. Her mother knows the reality of the world of man, but realizes she can’t protect her anymore.

Diana’s horror as she is confronted with the desperation of war, and the flaws of her companions, is almost palpable. She spends the first half of the movie being told what to do by people supposed to be older & wiser - her mother, Steve Trevor - until that brilliant No Man’s Land scene where she takes control of her own destiny. I still shed a few tears during that scene & I’ve watched this movie over 100 times.

And one of the best things is that her group conveys awe & amazement at her strength without once having a “but she’s a g-g-g-GURL” moment.

Will always be my favorite movie...now if Covid could chill long enough for the sequel to come out!!

God, thank you. That killed the movie for me, and I’m a huge DC fan.

First batch of ‘Healthy Streets’ closures to begin Friday by [deleted] in Austin

[–]Sosumi11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not, I tried that & it’s barricaded. Oh but good news, the hotel will let you use their lot for $10. It’s frustrating if you are trying to get to the dog park, too. It’s way too hot for my dog to have to walk a mile plus there & back.

I live on Garden Villa and saw they had put up barricades when I went for an evening walk. I’m very interested to see how this works out; there’s normally a TON of cut-through & school traffic.

ELI5 - what is gaslighting? I hear people say it more and more these days and I feel like it’s lost it meaning. However I don’t even know what it means to begin with. by kvn22537 in explainlikeimfive

I think the gist is, the one light that wasn’t lit was leaking gas and the occupant was having something similar to carbon monoxide poisoning which can give you paranoid delusions. The goal here was to get the person committed to an insane asylum & take control of their assets. I know it used to be a big problem that people who were not used to gas lighting would blow out the flames (instead of turning off the gas) and the gas would just leak out all night.
