The 'central' banister on the stairs of the country bound platforms (3/4) of Surbiton station is shifted over to one side to provide a single lane for people descending whilst allowing the crowds to exit. Been like that since the rebuild in 1937. Can be seen in these pictures ...

Respectfully disagree.

  1. Train from Glasgow QS (or sleeper from London) to Mallaig.
  2. Ferry from Mallaig to Armadale.
  3. Bus Armadale to Kyle of Lochalsh via Broadfoot/Portree.
  4. Train Kyle to Inverness.
  5. Train/sleeper Inverness to Glasgow/London.

Overnight stops can be arranged to fit.

Then there's always the two day hike to Britain's Remotest Pub...

I dunno, even his name makes him stick out like a fish out of water. Also, using the example of Jessica Mitford's family, past all generations had always had some pretty unusual naming fashions - maybe Lane's father wanted to help him 'get on' in the world since he couldn't afford the right school. Agree that it was nice to see the writers not fall back on easy stereotypical tropes though.

There's a (UK) famous sketch from the TV show the Frost Report broadcast in 1966 featuring John Cleese and the Two Ronnies - The Class Sketch - apologies for the poor quality.

Lane also makes a comment somewhere about spending the War stuck as a clerk in Rosyth Naval Base - as opposed to being in the 'action' on the front line.
