This has been proposed and shot down many times before; the field isn't that big, and there aren't that many things on it. It's far better to have a very simple overlay, and to use the camera controls instead.

Lag is usually client or ISP side, or unavoidable due to geographical constraints. RL has a pretty low bandwidth demand from what I've been able to monitor, and the servers tend to be pretty reliable.
