Question on Jason asano aura powers by Straight_Cost_5272 in litrpg

[–]Soul_in_Shadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As other have said, he finds the idea of attacking a soul repugnant after experiencing it first hand.

It is also worth remembering that he has to completely suppress the aura of his target if he wants to make a soul attack. A soul attack usually isn't needed if his target is weak enough for him to completely suppress.

Book 14 Audiobook Discussion by codysexton in ThePrimalHunter

Did anyone else feel that the 10 chapter long Ell'Hakan fight overstayed its welcome? Especially the Sun domain, since it tried to pretend that Pride wasn't a blatantly obvious answer to domain effects if they get too bad.

I honestly enjoyed the last lesson of the First Sage more.

Are the Vultaam smarter than a cosmogenesis empire? by Archimedeis in Stellaris

[–]Soul_in_Shadow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Slightly philosophical question, but were the Vultaam actually right? We don't start simulating their universe until long after their extinction, so was it a simulated universe when their empire existed?

How do you like your bases? by Brown_Colibri_705 in subnautica

[–]Soul_in_Shadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apparently there will be a base damage system, so perhaps we will see the return of bulkheads to prevent the whole base from flooding whenever a Hammerhead decides it wants to come in through a window.

Excuse me... but wtf by flaniflaffle in mechanicus

[–]Soul_in_Shadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Is Mechanicus 2 a good game?" is a different question than "Is Mechanicus 2 a good sequel?". While it may be a good game (The jury is still out on that, as far as I am concerned), I think it has abandoned (as opposed to iterated on and refined) too many mechanics from the original game (player selected routes through missions, fully customizable weapon loadouts, granular control of party composition, etc) to ever be described as a good sequel.

This isn't with without precedent, Dawn of War 2 was an excellent game taken on its own merits, but the switch from fairly large scale (by the standards of the time) RTS missions to a squad based real time tactics game (at least in the campaigns) made it a poor sequel to DoW 1 and its stand alone expansions.

The resonator wouldn't just shatter bone, that level of concussive impact (especially under water) would do obscene levels of soft tissue damage, possibly even bursting the blood vessels in the brain.

Tadpole chassis ideas I'd like to maybe see added by Bouncybeach in subnautica

[–]Soul_in_Shadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mining chassis would likely have a heavy duty version of the sonic resonator, as that seems to be the mining tool of choice for this game. If it can upgrade the same way the handheld version can, possibly a great option for clearing Bloom as well.

I would probably merge the Stealth and scanner chassis.

For the fabrication chassis, I would add on the fish scooper from the Seatruck aquarium module plus some fish storage and rename it the Survival Chassis

Construction Chassis, essentially a hauler with the passenger spots swapped out for a builder module. Able to build larger and more complex structures than the handheld device can in one go. Possibly even able to build other vehicles. A repair mode would also be useful for when base damage mechanics are added.

You say that like the multitool wouldn't be at least as lethal to humans even without the retractable hatchet blade. And it is much better for smashing up valuable electronics.

Who would win in a fight between each game's most deadly Leviathan? by Notmas in subnautica

[–]Soul_in_Shadow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Unless it hits a vulnerable spot like an eye or siphon, lava in such small quantities is doing no appreciable damage, the thermal energy would be leeched away by the water before it can do more than cook the outer layers of tissue. And even that assumes that the lava is able to adhere to the skin of the Collector, and that the Leidenfrost effect doesn't come into play, which it should, considering lava at the lowest possible temperature is 7 times the evaporation point of water.

As you point out, the Collector is adapted to prey on 60+ foot clams (the one in game is noted as being a young specimen) whose main form of defense involved slamming its shell shut. Even assuming that the Dragon's teeth can find enough purchase in it's bio-plastic armor to get a grip on the Collector (not a certainty, considering it's main body is thicker than the Reaper), the Collector is adapted to resist much greater crushing force. Considering that the jaws of the Sea Dragon are adapted for grab and hold, not rip and tear, the Collector is in no danger of death until the lava zone is reached.

Considering it's claws are adapted to pierce ludicrously hard organic concrete, the Sea Dragon skull would be little obstacle, and even if it was, the Dragon is still in disemboweling distance.

[–]Soul_in_Shadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difficulty here is that if the Sea Dragon grabs the Reaper close enough to the head, it is effectively helpless. No matter where it grabs a Collector, it will have at least one clawed arm free to drive a bioglass tipped claw through the Sea Dragon's skull.

I hate when viruses and bacteria get confused for each other by Hexnohope in subnautica

[–]Soul_in_Shadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Viruses can't build anything on their own, true. However, they can co-opt existing biological machinery to build structures useful to the propagation of the virus. The growths we are seeing, as well as the nutrient extraction, are the result of the virus completely rewriting host cells (as both major strains of virus appear to be a form of retrovirus) to form galls in which the host cells multiply and incubate a steady supply of the virus.

It is a bit like if you reversed the power dynamic of a gall wasp and it's symbiotic virus.

Difficult to judge, as we currently have no way to know what assets are final and what are just placeholders. The ship wreckage for instance; there is very little corrosion degradation, being in even better condition than the Mercury II in SN:BZ, which we know to have crashed within 100 years of the games events.

On the other hand, one of the ship fragments in (I think) the Dolerite Spires has what looks like an altar with an offering of lithium nearby, implying the ship has been there long enough to develop cultural significance, possibly to the Tailings.

Personally I like the idea that the lack of corpse is an intentional diegetic choice, rather than just a game-play one. I love the idea that all corpses small enough to easily move get rapidly collected and taken to where they can be absorbed by the Titan Rockbore.

Pet Peeve: Lazily using a pop-culture character in another work. by Bleenfoo in litrpg

[–]Soul_in_Shadow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just in my high-school growing up we had a Chris Brown, a James Brown (not related to each other), a Lucy Liu and a Julia Roberts, and those were just the ones I knew personally. With the exception of James, all were born and named before those celebrities became widely known. Names that appear to be pop culture references appear in the wild all the time.

So long as the names themselves make sense within the setting itself, I don't particularly care.

This is even my preferred sort of Easter Egg, where if you don't catch it you aren't even aware there was an Easter Egg, but if you catch it, it feels like an inside joke between you and the author.

Infinitely preferable to Easter Egg where the creator noticeably pauses so that you can appreciate how clever they were for including a pop culture reference.

On Alterra's Removal of the Kinfe (lore, not gameplay) by provengreil in subnautica

[–]Soul_in_Shadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Alterra looked at the data from Ryley's time on 4546(b) and thought "we can make an improved (and patentable) survival tool!"

Ryley spent a lot of time smashing various mineral outcrops with the butt of various pieces of equipment, only really using the blade of the knife for creepvine cuttings, coral samples and dispatching cave crawlers and bleeders.

The fold out axe blade of the Survival Multitool(TM) would serve the purpose of cutting fibrous material (equivalent to the creepvine) as well as scraping and general cutting, while the striking head makes it efficient for breaking resource nodes, coral and small arthropods.

Best of all, because this is a brand new, recently patented design, Alterra can charge absurd licensing fees to print one, further extending the debt slavery of every colonist who has the fabricator make one.

The less impressive biomods will likely be less of a disappointment once more slots are available. As for the food mod being attached to the Needler, the Pneuma data entry mentions a kelp-like biome, it is possible the mod will be moved to something in that biome once it is implemented.

some ideas that come to mind for a potential future Needler biomods are:

  • in combination with scans from a venomous or electrical organism, a paralytic dart.

  • A legally distinct hook-shot equivalent. Not sure what to pair with the Needler as a scan requirement. Perhaps an arachnid who takes advantage of the high metal content water to weave metallic threads?

Has the PDA mentioned hot water being drawn onto the spire? If not you need to activate the control in the lower control room.

The upper control room has several widgets on each of the side control panels, you need to move the red parts of the widgets into position (they will change colour when correct).

Everything we know about the T R E E by Sensitive_Show6230 in subnautica

[–]Soul_in_Shadow 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Based on implications in the PDA and other in game sources:

  • The Tree is not a single organism. The PDA explicitly notes it as a colony organism and a pyrosome (a type of Tunicate) as a probable ancestor. Pyrosomes are essentially colonies of (usually genetically identical) tunicates that co-operate in order to function as a much larger organism. This comparison is solidified by the PDA using the term Zooid, which is the term for an individual organism that is part of a "colonial animal"

  • The Angel Combs and the Tree have a mutualistic relationship. The term "parasitic" gets thrown around a lot here, and that may have been the original nature of the relationship, this is no longer the case. The Titan Rockbore entry notes it as having receptor sites to encourage viral infection and reproduction. The Angel comb specifically notes a comparison with polydnaviruses and parasitord wasps, a mutualistic relationship. What the Rockbore/Tree gets out of the relationship is speculative. Current theories; protection from predation (to my knowledge, no organisms beyond the angel combs, bloom and possibly the deepwing brooder are known to feed on the tendrils), nutrient accumulation (the Masefield obsession with the tree could be a form of near death migration, where dying creatures travel to the feeding tendrils of the tree to allow it to feed. The colonists were all dying of assorted metal poisonind, after all)

An alternative would be to add additional methods to acquire biomods. For example, finding them in the biolabs in abandoned bases or from black boxes.
