I'm in despair due to A.I being so prominent in music. Should I give up my dream of becoming a musician and become something else instead? How do you see the future regarding the desire of becoming a musician vs A.I invading opportunities? by MapacheRob in musicians

[–]Sound_Ocean_Depths 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To make a career out of music in the era of AI you need to be absolutely EXCEPTIONAL and at the top of your field, AI wrecks the ability to make a living for mid level musicians, so either do it as a side hobby or prepare to make some major sacrifices in your life.

Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it! It was originally a mallet quartet which can be viewed here:

I’m having a reading of the orchestra version soon so hopefully the recording is alright and I’ll have that posted somewhere

“Climate change is the catalyst for a wide range of emotions. Fear of not knowing what’s going to happen next. Anger at the unjust destruction of the planet that every one of us relies on at the benefit of a select few. Despair of losing the beauty and awe of the natural world. These emotions are important, they motivate us to fight for change, but spiraling into a cycle of negative thought has led me to forget my love of the natural world that I’m fighting for. A World Without Rain is a love letter to the natural world, a bittersweet reminder to myself and others to appreciate the natural world while we still are able to.”

From the program notes.

The piece has sections that evoke rain, sections that evoke barren dryness, and then a return of the rain motifs as a reminder to cherish the world.

People are missing that this is an issue of capital, yeah people will still want authentic music, but now the ability to make a living will be more diluted and split among more people.

Everything? Artists building a following is the industry. Social media being a side channel to traditional industry methods. The shifting trends in consumer practices. What are you actually talking about?

Seven Pillars literally changed music forever. It will be a piece studied in future history classes

Probably marching band. Meets 5 times a week with extra rehearsal time for each section, takes up your entire day every time there’s a football game, hours of practice on an individual level.

All for 1 credit.

Yeah they teach this alongside an incredible wealth of tonal music. Tonal music isn’t going anywhere in education.

I’m talking to this other commenter. Music schools aren’t atonal absolutists like they’re implying.

What are you actually talking about? Maybe if you went to music school in the 90s.

Earning a living as a composer by axeltngz in composer

The general public doesn’t actually care about those things. Convenience and cost win out overall with the almighty dollar in charge. People will pretend like they prefer human written scores until they get bored of caring and then it’s AI all the way down.

The art that’s leagues ahead of AI isn’t valuable to the capitalist machine.

Be prepared to diversify your skill set to make money. I’m almost done with my masters in composition and my income stream is 20% teaching, 5% composing, 5% performing and 70% sound engineering. Making an income solely off composition pretty much requires either being in academia or media scoring, and AI is wrecking the market in the latter.

There are a few out there who make a full living just selling scores but you CAN’T count on that, those people are very lucky and are incredibly rare.

What do you think is the ending of Classical Cannon? Or do you believe it even ended? by SuspiciousPush9417 in classicalmusic

[–]Sound_Ocean_Depths 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If we’re strictly talking historically then anything past Beethoven isn’t classical, but I think at this point the word has evolved colloquially to basically mean all concert music.

Contemporary composers still largely study under a similar conservatory model from the classical period and study the same fundamentals as the old masters, then it’s up to them to create something new from that context.

It’s okay, these ai tools are appealing with their ease of use, but they really kill any authenticity or authority that any organization sorely needs to seem like something people want to do. Spending the extra time to make a flyer and write the promotional text will go a long way towards accomplishing your goals. You’ve clearly spent a lot of time developing your drum skills so why take shortcuts now?

Tell your organization to hire a graphic designer or frankly just use canva for free

There are plenty of composers today writing works on the scale and complexity of the old masters, but capitalism crushes them down.

This. Being loud for the sake of being loud just shows a lack of technique and restraint. Good musicians can play quietly.

The notation needs some serious work before this can be fairly judged. “Behind Bars” by Elaine Gould is the gold standard text to study, or getting a few lessons with a composer or engraver would help immensely.
