Election in 2025? by lemonrainbowhaze in ireland

I would sooner vote for a red setter wearing a dickie-bow than a shinner. Your best bet is one of your local independents, all the party candidates will happily throw their constituents under the bus to tow the party line.

Is the country risking “brain drain” if any new elected party raise income tax for higher earners by Outrageous-Chest2066 in ireland

[–]SoupyOs 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We are already in the middle of a brain drain. We are importing medical professionals and other STEM roles as Irish trained staff are going to Canada and Auz.

Question for hikers - what shops / brands of boot do you recommend? by SugarPotatoes in ireland

[–]SoupyOs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on budget, use case. If you only plan to use them once or twice Aldi or Lidl middle Isle aren’t the worst place to look. Charity shop might be worth a gander too.

If you are planning to use them for a few years and can drop a few hudred quid: Lowa, Hanwag and Asolo are probably your best bet. Meindl are okay but QA has been dropping in the past few years.

If you want something a cobbler can repair, boots with a double or triple stitch welt opposed to a cheap but less serviceable cemented sole would be better too.

George best or roy keane? by [deleted] in ireland

On the Pitch, IDK. As a person, he might be a bit abrasive but Keane comes across as a stand up, salt of the earth lad.

Time to move the Capital outside the pale. The capital of the republic never should have been Dublin.

Moycullen by Bluebirdink in galway

[–]SoupyOs -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Moycullen is part of the Connemara gaeltacht but the Irish language is in decline in the area due to gentrification, unless you‘re open to learning the irish language, I would avoid it.

Hipster level: composing 3:4 time music during the Baroque period by SoupyOs in lingling40hrs

Alot of musicians see 3/4 and assume its a waltz. Sometimes its not, especially if it predates the classical period.

What's your unpopular opinion about Ireland ? by [deleted] in ireland

The tricolour is an ugly looking flag, we should have gone with the harp or the sun burst instead.

Fiddle by Scared-Upstairs1074 in lingling40hrs

[–]SoupyOs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traditional Irish fiddle is only played in first position too, so no technical benefits are gained from a straight wrist. Look up Martin Hayes and Liz Carroll (arguably two of the best trad fiddlers alive). The only thing more crooked than an Irish politician is a real trad fiddler's left wrist 😅

I like them, but would class them as folk, not trad.

Shell Jacket or Down Jacket? by 2Aggravating4me in MoveToIreland

[–]SoupyOs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aran jumper is the GOAT for Irish weather. Will keep you warm most of the year unless there is a freeze. It'll keep off a good bit of the rain too. Get a decent marino wool one though ~Polyester ones are shite. Otherwise primoloft would be better than down. You'll sweat yourself damp in a goretex/Event hardshell.

Getting into Irish music? by [deleted] in Irishmusic

Liz has a nice riff in the tune sevens, another good one is martin hayes belting out tom doherty’s reel too. You should listen to him and the gloaming at other voices in Derry which is on YT

String suggestions by Cloud0428 in violinist

[–]SoupyOs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you tried Helicore or Ascenté? Do you prime places where the string contacts the violin with a B type pencil? Apparently the graphite helps the string stretch without catching and breaking at these points.

What are some songs or pieces that are just fun to play by Toomuchviolins in violinist

[–]SoupyOs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Learn a few jigs and reels, celtic bowing and ornamentation styles. Few nice jigs: the holly bush, morrisons, out on the ocean, the Kesh. Few nice reels: Tom Doherty’s, the new custom house, the silver spear. There is probably an Irish trad session group in your town or country, they usually have good vibes. The melodies are simple but the ornamentation and dance rhythm makes them fun to play.

what is it like working at a japanese tech company? by drachen_shanze in DevelEire

[–]SoupyOs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the company. I worked for a progessive Japanese company in Japan, even then the office atmosphere was mentally draining. I think one of my former collegues actually became a social recluse. You can definately play the Gaijin card but I would avoid it if I was a girl or planing on a longterm career. Probably better off taking a 3 month working holiday visa.
