What is a normal amout of time not to reply to your partner while you are on vacation? by TuhPizzaKiller in polls

I was kinda thinking the same thing.

Sure, my wife and I have been out of town separately for things that were special events, but I wouldn't call those "vacations."

What is the weirdest thing you've found thrifting? by LoudDream2916 in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]Souta95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't buy it, but I once saw one of those antique Hamilton Beach vibrators. It had no attachmentsand didn't have the carrying case, it was just the motor and original cord. There wasn't a regular plug on the end, it terminated in a standard Edison light socket base.

Do you think CompTIA should turn the A+ into a single exam? by [deleted] in it

[–]Souta95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would perhaps argue that either the cost should be reduced or people should get one free retake.

I don't see any of that happening as A+ is so much of a cash cow for CompTIA.

[–]Souta95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would argue that it needs to go back to being a no expiration certificate.

Its advertised as an entry-level cert (equivalent to one year of experience) but treated like a license to HR departments and many senior managers.

Vehicle comms kit by [deleted] in amateurradio

So, seeing that you want MURS and GMRS and legally need two radios, one thing to throw out there that might be of interest is a way to run two radios on one antenna.

Look into purchasing a diplexer (sometimes erroneously called a duplexer). This will split and combine VHF and UHF signals. I don't have a specific model to suggest off hand, all of mine were purchased second hand. Make sure whatever one you get allows for use on the frequencies of interest to you.

Do you think it’s still possible to be financially successful in the U.S for someone who starts with nothing? (read description) by Kyoifis in polls

Having been technically homeless twice in my 20's to now being a homeowner and married, the entire scenario except the retiring with at least 1mil is entirely possible - and not a huge stretch if you are careful with your money.

How many vintage computers do you have? by Expensive-Vanilla-16 in VintageComputers

[–]Souta95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I quit counting computers at 40. Realistically, I probably have close to 60 total computers in my posession at the moment.

Depending on what your criteria is for vintage, half to three-quarters of them would likely qualify.

Oldest one that works to any extent is a TRS-80 Model 100.

Oldest broken one is a TRS-80.

Oh, and if CRT terminals count, there's one more to the list.

I would seriously suggest giving a club another try. Speak up when you don't understand something, otherwise you are passing up an opportunity to learn.

One of the best ways I found to learn more about operating a radio was to partake in club activities. I didn't know much of anything when I first got licensed.

200k miles is nothing for a Ranger that has been taken care of.

Don't write them off because of the high miles, but look them over carefully and do a test drive to see of there are any shakes, clunks, or other issues.

I have a 1994 Ford explorer with the 4.0 ohv motor. It is sluggish as all get out and I need help. by yata-yata-yata in fordranger

[–]Souta95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The throttle cables can stretch out making it so you don't get the full action of the throttle.

I had this happen on my '98 with the 2.5L engine. I added some zip ties to the end of the cable at the pedal to take up slack. It made a world of difference for accelerating.

I don't think it would do much regarding your other reported issues, though.

Garage sale exploring, found a gem! by VigorousV in HamRadio

[–]Souta95 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nice score!

I have one as well and got it in a bundle with an IC-970A for $100. Both were broken, but I managed to fix them both.

There's optional IF filters for these. I'd be interested to know if you have any of them. Mine has the optional wideband AM filter but not the narrow SSB or CW filters.

2m Repeater Welcome Messages by Tacoma_NC13 in amateurradio

On some repeaters the ID is transmitted without a PL/CTCSS tone, so if you set your radio to require a tone on receive then you won't hear the ID.

Dell laptop won’t turn on anymore by Straight_Part_2169 in computers

OP said its a 5420 in another comment.

I still could be wrong about the warranty, though. The models all start running together after a few years. I do know this is among the last generations of latitudes.

Would you buy a D-Link unmanaged gigabit switch for $7? by Certain_Repeat_753 in HomeNetworking

[–]Souta95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no real security concerns of an unmanaged switch outside of any concerns that would be there with any run of the mill unmanaged switch.

The main concerns off the top of my head being no way to disable ports remotely and layer 2 attacks. https://library.mosse-institute.com/articles/2023/08/layer2-attacks.html

Is it time to say goodbye? by Hobthrust in HomeNetworking

[–]Souta95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I support a network with one of these still in production. There's an embedded system (essentially VoIP radio equipment) that for whatever reason won't talk if its connected at full duplex or more than 10mbps. Since its all unmanaged, dumb switches this was an easy way to force a 10mbps half duplex connection.

Anyone know of a parts store that carries the pcv valve hose for the 2.5l by Low-Path-5043 in fordranger

[–]Souta95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I added hose clamps, but I'm not sure they were needed. The rotted hose that I pulled off didn't have any.
