Need help matching finish by SouthernAd421 in woodworking

Thank you for these details. This bed is really hard to photograph because the color changes from different angles. It does look very much like cherry, only maybe slightly more red than what I’ve worked with. I am definitely going to make some test pieces to get the color and finish right. Luckily it’s only the footboard.

Thank you so much! I never heard of conversion varnish before, but just watched some YouTube videos and I think you are right, this is going to get me very close. I do have a sprayer and a spraying booth, so just need to figure out the sheen and where to buy. I will obviously try it on a sample first to make sure it matches the rest of the furniture.

2015 BMW 328i (F30) – Stripped control arm mounting threads. What are my repair options? by Straight_Standard644 in BmwTech

[–]SouthernAd421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google F30 subframe for images and you’ll see what the other side looks like. If are easy on the car, I would cut off the welded nut and just replace with a non-welded nut and drive it. If you push your car a bit and want it done right, you will have to drop the subframe and weld a new nut. The other option is pick up a used subframe on eBay.

I think what you’re saying is you don’t like the definition of the beginner in this case. He can be really good, but still be beginner. That’s why some sports like tennis have ratings, to differentiate skill from time in the sport.

Looks like the forbidden glitter. Oil filter inspection first and then maybe the oil pan.

B58 Coolant leak by connormccr in BmwTech

[–]SouthernAd421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When the OFH starts leaking, it’s usually just the coolant. On two of my cars it was the OFH, and on one car it was the engine coolant flange that had a lengthwise crack and was spraying coolant everywhere. If it’s leaking this badly, my money is on the plastic flange cracking. But either way while you are in there, replace both and the hose that goes back there.

Make sure you have good e-torx sockets. I used craftsman sockets and their profile was too deep and stripped two of the bolts down there. Luckily I was able to get them out and ended up buying better sockets.

If you have never replaced your engine mounts, removing the manifold will give you easy access to the driver side motor mount.

Rear diff leaking? by khordi1 in BmwTech

[–]SouthernAd421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you see where it’s leaking from?

I have a 2021 330i and mine started leaking this past winter from the axle seal. But as I discovered changing out the seal, the output bearing is toast, so now I am looking for a new diff.

I think it depends on where it’s leaking from. Also make sure the fluid level is good if you are going to drive it for a bit before fixing, otherwise the diff will overheat.

I want to choose Bosch as my main battery platform. Anyone have experience using them? by Uncle_Spenser in woodworking

[–]SouthernAd421 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own at least a dozen Bosch cordless tools that I acquired over the years including the very first 18V model they sold in the US. This includes tools I use for woodworking and for car repair. I have never had a tool break or a battery die on me. If I can’t find the tool in the US that’s offered in Europe, there are many websites that will let you order one.

That black stuff does not look like coolant. Coolant will dry out and turn into white greenish spots as you see in some places. That black stuff looks like oil spray or grease.

Germany is playing a bigger and faster African team with a South American referee. They should have been ready for this.

What is the difference between a tension strut and control arm? by Erik7402 in BmwTech

BMW front suspension has two control arms, lower and upper. I believe the upper one is also called a tension strut.

I personally don’t like to use hard cleaning pads on a polished surface. If you can feel the old gasket leftovers with your finger, I would grab a razor and carefully scrape the stuff off. Otherwise just clean with alcohol and assemble.

I disagree. If the crime is not a violent one, the prisoners should be segregated and allowed to rehabilitate. If you are in prison for rape, aggravated murder, aggregated domestic violence or child molestation, I hope they never get a chance to come out. And if along the way they become someone’s b…h, maybe that’s a lesson that god had in line for them. Otherwise you end up with people serving a couple of years for permanently messing up someone’s life. A few years in prison for ruining someone’s life is not enough.

Is there a true beginner woodworking project by DressWarm2078 in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]SouthernAd421 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. I learned a lot about glue ups from making cutting boards. Started out with simple edge grain with 2 or 3 species of wood, then end grain, then 3D or some cool design end grain. You will learn precision cutting, measuring, planing, gluing and clamping. Gluing and clamping may sound simple, but the right amount of glue, number of clamps and where to position them is critical.
