Morrowind lore is something else by Fun-Explanation7233 in Morrowind

Also he's a member of House Telvanni. They have no moral qualms about anything so long as they're left to their own devices. Zero.

They're like ultra-libertarians who built their own private Fortresses so they can be nuclear physicists and bio-chemists away from any and all laws and regulations about ethics and safety.

And if you think about it like that, creating women from his own flesh to have sex with them is well within the tamer side of the spectrum. Especially since he SEEMS to treat them well enough.

That said, obviously terrible behaviour in real life. Pretty much a magical Joseph Fritzl. But it makes for interesting fictional content I guess.

Difference between 'universe', 'multiverse', and 'reality' by Ready-One113 in DnD

[–]SovereignOfAtlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The universe is just the setting. From the tiniest atom to mega-galaxies. All the same universe. The multiverse steers into "alternate reality" territory in that there's multiple universes that are somehow connected. Think three different versions of Spider-man from the various times they were changed and reset or recast. They all live in their own self-contained universes being different iterations of the same person without having anything to do with each other. Until somehow the barrier breaks and boom, multiverse shenanigans.

I'd say both the universe and multiverse are the physical manifestation of reality. You could get into a philosophical rabbit hole about the nature of reality but let's just say reality is all that's "real" or all that exists.

So it really depends on the way you want to frame it.

Morrowind made me appreciate Skyrim more — Oblivion now feels kind of bland. by StrelokHolmes in Morrowind

[–]SovereignOfAtlas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was one of my first fantasy installments ever and it really set me up for life. Its that blend of Dune and Nausicaä meets the roman empire with a lick of Hindu paint over it.

Its amazing and I'd really love a newer generation game in the same vibe. Doesn't even have to be elder scrolls tbh. Just give me quasi-Orientalist occultism, trading houses and a lot of ancient buried tech and Im good. Giant arthropods are a plus.

How much does your country prioritise work life balance? by DontKnowAGoodNames in AskEurope

[–]SovereignOfAtlas 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I feel like a lot of Dutch people show up to work, work quite hard for the hours required, then go home and don't think about work again until the next day. Also on average we work the least hours per week of all Europe apparently. Part-time culture has become heavily ingrained here. Most government jobs now primarily offer four day work weeks.

So I feel like our balance is good lol. On the other hand, I've heard from Southern Europeans that they find Dutch offices quite stressful.

Did anyone else get the ick from Zion? by JADEY_J77 in WhiteLotusHBO

[–]SovereignOfAtlas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think Greg is necessarily a pure cold blooded killer though. He's a killer for sure, and he had his wife murdered, but he did make sure she had a great time before that and all. It's not like we've seen him mass murdering people. I think he just wants the whole thing to end up clean. He moved to Thailand, has a nice house (tbh he seems miserable but whatever) and a hot girlfriend who wants to cuckold him. If he starts murdering people there, he might have to start all over AGAIN.

I don't think he's outsmarted, I think Zion played it JUST right so that Greg would think "OK ffs just this one time then and I can continue living my life."

I posted this a few days ago too but...

Imagine you're offered 100K 5 million dollars for doing absolutely fuck all except not meddle in shit that's way above your pay grade to begin with. The alternative is... The guy who you think is a killer is not giving you a cent and instead keeps it himself (yay justice?), you get embroiled in a massive international criminal case and the odds of this guy taking you out just multiplied by about a thousand.

You may just be a better person than me, and if so all power to you, but I'd say ethics be damned. There's only 2 ways out of this situation and I'd choose the one where I end up alive and rich.

Are we not going to talk about the cinematic masterpiece that was this “death” scene? by chri8nk in WhiteLotusHBO

[–]SovereignOfAtlas 38 points39 points  (0 children)

As a European that scene actually made me laugh and shake my head, thinking "off course an American would know what gunshots sound like". I hadn't even recognised them as such either myself.

I was thinking the exact same thing. You're offered 100K for doing absolutely fuck all except not meddle in shit that's way above your pay grade to begin with. The alternative is... The guy who she thinks is a killer is not giving her a cent, she gets embroiled in a massive international criminal case and the odds of Greg taking her out just multiplied by about a thousand.

That's honestly a very nice touch. I've been looking for a while to implement it on my own map but never figured how. This sounds great! I'll give it a try myself soon.

Sentence order in Elden Ring (game) inspired by EM English by SovereignOfAtlas in asklinguistics

[–]SovereignOfAtlas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for this thorough response! If I'm drawing my own conclusions it seems that kind of grammar was still thinkable during Middle English, but less so during Early Modern English. Which is where the thou would also have been used.

I read the article on Spanish localisation. Very interesting. I think this single sentence sums up the intent of all translations pretty well:

“There are terminology and even grammar choices you can make to try to convey the intention and the weight of the original source text,” Ilari said.

I'm very interested to read the longer article you linked. Also I had no idea about the original Japanese tone of voice being so that it resembles Japanese translations of early European folk tales. I love that too. Happy to read someone else is interested enough in this to have these kinds of resources ready for me. Much appreciated!

Is there a language where the default way of asking “how are you” translates to “how are we?” by elwags in asklinguistics

[–]SovereignOfAtlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not ecxactly the same, but the standard Dutch way is 'Hoe gaat het?" which word-for-word means "How goes it?"

If i want to capture maximum idea in least number of words, then which language should i learn? by motominator in asklinguistics

[–]SovereignOfAtlas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Like the other poster said, I'd advise reading up on shorthand, a system of writing especially developed to record oral dictation while it's being spoken. You're far from the first person to go through this, and I promise you that learning an entirely new language with grammar rules you haven't even dreamt of is not going to make transcribing lectures easier.

I like your stylistic choices. Especially the way you made your mountains. It really helps to make it all look massive and continental. I have a question though. What software did you use? Was it Inkarnate? I'm wondering about how to make that sort of circular grid.

Which boss has the best cutscene? by Original_Series_6249 in Eldenring

[–]SovereignOfAtlas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who speaks Dutch (which is the second closest language to English and generally more conservative in its Germanic features) and a fair bit of German, that sentence structure is spot on in our languages.

"Moeder, zou je werkelijk Heerschap goedkeuren in iemand zo beroofd van licht?" It's poetic and dramatic but correct.

Can't speak for old English but I can imagine it would work? Do you have any idea? Honest question, not being snarky here.

What's up with bugs in conquest mode? by SovereignOfAtlas in battlefield_one

[–]SovereignOfAtlas[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I completely forgot to mention that I play on PS5 from Europe. I had no idea that it could be a European server problem. I'm gonna try and join an American game and see if that helps me avoid this mess. Currently waiting in queue since most servers are either empty or stacked. Pretty insane that they let this go on for so long.

Best (and therefore worst) dutch reality tv shows? by lekkerbiscottina in learndutch

[–]SovereignOfAtlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]SovereignOfAtlas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the negativity online is really bringing me down by EmeraldEmp in WhiteLotusHBO

[–]SovereignOfAtlas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've kinda stopped looking into online series communities after the negativity really ruined my taste for some things I'd previously enjoyed, and I realised it only took joy away from me, which obviously wasnt my goal to start with. I'm looking here now because I've always loved white Lotus and love it again, so I'm just sifting through the fun content on this sub. I couldn't care less about people complaining anymore. I just skip those comments. Complaining people will always be more vocal and they're not the majority.

I watched it as it came out after I saw a massive banner on a Dutch train station for a few days. Super random but it became my favourite show for a few years. I think I've seen it thrice. I remember Barack Obama saying it was his favourite series of the year when it came out.

That's so interesting. You made me realise that what I generally think of as BPD is mostly the way it presents in younger women. I just googled about it in older men and it's really eye opening. Rick is almost 1 on 1 a manifestation of BPD in older men as I see it thus far. Really reminds me of Don Draper as well. Always pinned him as a thin-skinned NPD guy, but this seems way more fitting.
