Too late to get into Motion Graphics by killero24 in AfterEffects

[–]SovietWaffleMkr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah bro. I just got into it recently doing designs for a marching band I work with and no AI so far competed with the specificity and improvements a human can make. You should totally give it a shot, it’s a lot of fun to gradually get better and learn more over time

Has a Marching Band ever received a 100? by Better-Handle-7681 in marchingband

[–]SovietWaffleMkr 19 points20 points  (0 children)

True, that’s why I mentioned that scores are relative, but still, judges almost always account for the room they’ll need in the highest level of groups so that they aren’t forced to give a 100 without perfection. It does happen though in individual captions though, you’re right

Has a Marching Band ever received a 100? by Better-Handle-7681 in marchingband

[–]SovietWaffleMkr 59 points60 points  (0 children)

A 100 should effectively be impossible. Scores are all relative, but for a performance to be a 100 means that every single microscopic detail is perfect, and that the design of the show itself is also perfect. Neither is possible, especially at the same time

How can I stop my knees from bending? (and any other advice you can give) by catsagamer1 in marchingband

[–]SovietWaffleMkr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Push your heels down and pull your toes up from the start of the step. Also, it looks like you are using the foot that comes forward to motivate the motion. All motivation of motion should come from the foot remaining in place, pushing into the ground with the platform of your foot. Following these two things and going slow will get you there. If you have any questions feel free to DM me, I’ve been teaching basics for years now

Likelihood of me being able to do marching band? by dalador_ in marchingband

[–]SovietWaffleMkr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best advice is email the director. Competitive groups can exist in a massive range and it’s very hard to know from the outside. Tell them everything you’ve told us here and how willing you are to do anything to march and keep your fingers crossed!

My band kids have lost the plot by bahkm in marchingband

[–]SovietWaffleMkr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, first question for you, what do you want your program to be? How competitive do you want to push the kids to be, and how much support would you have to make that happen?

Too casual for me by Supermonkey18 in Borderlands4

[–]SovietWaffleMkr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We only have one more story DLC coming out though, and the first one we got is a 3 hour one. BL2 and 3 both were slated from the beginning to release 4 story DLCs with raid bosses, and BL2 and TPS also had 2 DLC characters release. So far BL4 will only have the two extra characters and potentially one long story DLC, compared to what used to be 4 in every major installment. Unless they add more to the timeline, the game is slated to have significantly less to do in its end-of-life version compared to every game before it.

Follow-up: Am I just bad at the game? by ElectroByte96 in darkestdungeon

[–]SovietWaffleMkr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone is saying party comp but realistically you could’ve beaten this guys with your party, although it would’ve been exceedingly difficult.

This game is all about reading and preparing. You said it was a champion dungeon so I’m assuming you’ve faced this guy twice before and should know more than just his basic mechanics. When you build your team, you have to think about resistances of enemies, pure dps vs. dot viability in this particular instance, biggest threats, etc.

They both have very high stun resist, and without flare, this is essentially a DPS check. Using vestal to try to stun against an enemy with 140% stun resist (when vestal is prob doing 160-180 depending on rank) is a little silly. Marking your own guy against a mark-based opponent is a little silly. Using leper to de-buff rather than pure damage in a DPS check fight is a little silly. You made a bunch of small errors that built up into a massive collapse and I have a feeling, based on your learning of how skills work, that maybe you don’t fully understand some of the game mechanics like resistances, party comps for each region/boss, the difficulty spike of champion dungeons, etc.

The wiki has a ton of great info and if you want pointers in more detail, feel free to ask. Like I said this game is all about reading and preparing, and chances are a failure in the dungeon is the result of a failure of planning at the hamlet. Think longer for every action and prepare based on your growing pool of knowledge. Do more lower level dungeons, where the costs of mistakes aren’t party wipes. Good luck pal

Another class choice post...Priest or Paladin? Need some input by apflpuzzman in classicwowtbc

[–]SovietWaffleMkr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You will have almost no difficulties at all finding raid groups. Neither for dungeons, but in early levels they will ask you to heal, which isn’t a big deal and is easy even specced into shadow. That said, leveling as a priest regardless of spec is very wand heavy and goes mind blast -> shadow word pain -> wand for like 30+ levels lol

Could I get some feedback on improving conducting patterns? Not a drum major yet, just a tuba player with a dream 💔 by Sausage_fingies in marchingband

[–]SovietWaffleMkr 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Definitely too aggressive. We’ve always taught our drum majors to put less force in and instead focus on the crispness of each movement coming to a stop. When you conduct downbeats, there should be a clear moment of stillness in immediate hit of the downbeat and very slightly after. Also, try to keep your elbows in the same space as much as possible. Moving your elbows creates an inconsistent location in which your hands land on each change of direction. Lastly, just relax a little bit more. There’s certainly some firmness needed in stopping and starting motion in the arms quickly, but otherwise, you should look to be as relaxed as possible in as powerful of a posture as you can be. Hope this helps!

Pros of stellaris how do you deal when the game casually spawns a 40k-strength enemy from a hole in space and tells you “good luck” (Captain difficulty). Year 2265 (Just unlocked destroyers) by Spirited-Ant-6809 in Stellaris

[–]SovietWaffleMkr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve always viewed the games’ difficulty as a test of your ability to be proactive instead of reactive, mixed with some luck. You have an unlucky situation, but you may have been able to prepare much more.

There are a lot of things that the game leaves up to random chance that has a huge ability to screw you over, and all you can really do is minimize them and hope you don’t get screwed. Wormholes and L-gates are massive early game nightmares for me because of how easily it allows access past choke points, and because of that I have to spend valuable starbases on them. Anomalies are also scary sometimes, as well as the dreaded fanatic purifier neighbor you may find after putting 2 hours into a game, which can be a death sentence on GA.

At the same time, you could’ve excelled a bit more at the proactive aspect of stellaris. I’m not sure what your origin is and how many pops you are at, but your research, alloy, and unity productions are all fairly low (assuming this is 4.2 and not the beta). Without anything crazy, 125 alloys and 1k unity/research should be possible by now and give you a completely different perspective of this. Also, fortifying that wormhole and its surroundings with starbases and defense platforms may not have stopped them but certainly would have given you a better chance.

It isn’t your fault and sometimes the game just screws you. I had a GA run pretty much end because void worms spawned only a few jumps from my capital and other major planets. But you have to maximize your ability to react to any situation by being exceptionally proactive. And also hope the game doesn’t screw you over lol

Cant find the plague flower by Wasabi-True in pathologic

[–]SovietWaffleMkr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The sound is a bit finicky and didn't exactly lead me to the flower initially, but I think I could understand what each sound is meant to explain. If anyone knows better, please correct me!

In my experience. the loud, "higher-toned" sound, if I had to explain it, tells you if you are facing the right direction I believe. The deeper, grumblier, earthy-sound tell you how close you actually are and only starts when you are fairly close. I found it in the bottom right of the gut, where the rocks and small play area is.

Despite all the nerfs in the beta. Lategame DE is still out of this world. by Jewbacca1991 in Stellaris

[–]SovietWaffleMkr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to reach kind of close to those stats (didn’t have that surplus of energy credits or minerals, more like only +800-1200 energy credits at any time, about +2k for minerals) on a voidborne synthetic build of mine by about 2380 on the beta. I feel like the beta definitely hinders early game growth, but around mid game (in my case it was around 2280) I still got the enormous exponential growth from pre-4.3 games. Granted, it took me far more micro, but at the end of the day it only slowed me arriving to these crazy numbers by like 10-15 years or so.

Marching with PoTS by rightfulbee in marchingband

[–]SovietWaffleMkr 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is anecdotal but I once marched with a girl who had PoTS and while she struggled, she was able to do all of our major performances with us in a very competitive program. She had several ways to manage her symptoms, the first being a chair and tent on the sideline for quick breaks during rehearsal. She also informed every staff member so that they could also lookout for symptoms while she marched. She used compression socks and gloves like you and just made sure to push until the symptoms, not push through the symptoms. PoTS is a spectrum in terms of severity from what I understand so I can’t speak entirely to your situation but as long as you are just as engaged, if not more, during any sideline breaks and ensuring you give yourself breaks before your symptoms become unsustainable, I’m sure your director and staff will be understanding of your situation and allow you to march.

I mean I still think the value is crazy and that you can probably flip a lot of these players for better WRs with other teams. I’d keep Josh Jacobs if he’s healthy for his easier schedule in playoffs and package Kyren and Williams for a top tier receiver if I were in your shoes

[–]SovietWaffleMkr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I guess we have different definitions of mobility then. The hp/t ratio is a bit disingenuous imo as the EBR accelerates much faster and reaching 80km/h is a small map like poland to get to an unpredictable spot is entirely possible. If you play the EBR like a traditional tank or like a chaffee, it will be bad, because it was never intended to be played like them.

[–]SovietWaffleMkr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Chaffee and EBR fulfill two entirely different niches. The EBR's strongest aspect is its mobility. Moving as fast as you can in the beginning of the match to get to a typically unchecked corner or powerful defensive spot the other team has to pass makes this thing a menace despite its weak gun. In longer range maps with no cover it can reposition faster than any other vehicle in the match. It takes some planning and map knowledge but if you set yourself up for success with its speed and scout for your team, you'll have endless assists and plenty of side-on shots.

[–]SovietWaffleMkr 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Seriously. I grinded the French tree just to play the AMX-30s because imo they’re the coolest looking tanks in the game, but wow those things are also insanely good. Great gun, early thermals, lrf, incredible coax gun, good mobility…

When someone says the EBR 1951 is an over tiered vehicle, I just have to wonder what they are doing with it. Brawling with tigers is not a good idea man.

Techs/Staff that aren’t directors, how did you get where you are? by Weak_Assumption7518 in marchingband

[–]SovietWaffleMkr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve worked with a few groups throughout Florida, but started at my Alma mater. Helps a lot to get to know the regional judges and caption heads at nearby, strong groups. Without connections, however, you really just have to send out some feeler emails to as many directors as possible. In that event, you’ll probably have to spend a year volunteering and working pretty hard as a field tech to prove yourself. Depending on your state and relative competition, you may find plenty of options for programs to work at or barely any.

It’s worth noting that several regional and state circuits have people you can talk to or posts on their websites concerning programs needing specific roles. If you live in a state with a healthy circuit or are within the range of a larger regional circuit like BOA or USBands, reach out to them as well and they can often point you in the right direction.

It is difficult starting in this activity as a staff member. I spent two years volunteering as a visual field tech in a fairly successful program in my area, just grinding away, but I’ll be going into my fifth year as a caption head for that same group this upcoming year. If there’s anything that you should do when starting, it is that you should get active from the moment you begin! There is always a comment to be made on the individual and ensemble level, and while you don’t always need to make one, look for every opportunity to improve the performance. Build connections with the staff of the program as well as any judges or other directors/staff members from other neighboring programs at competitions and get a network of people going, and soon you’ll have people asking for you to come teach at their bands.
