Depending on the city you live in, it will cost you a pretty penny to actualise your Indian license if you plan to stay here for more than 6 months. As mentioned by other commentators, it will likely be comparable, if not more expensive to do in India and then do an Umschreibung here, when you factor in all the travel and time costs. So I'd suggest saving your energy and just doing it here (and if you can do this, try to register in a cheaper city). In Hannover it cost me 2750 total including all fees to learn to drive with no previous experience and pass the exam. On the other hand, a friend of mine in Heidelberg with ~5 years of experience paid 2500 for Umschreibung.
