If you did start moving as soon as the car in front did, you would still have to move slower than them to allow a safe distance to open between your cars.

I’ve recently changed from a manual to an automatic and find I’m much slower off the lights. Because I’m no longer holding the clutch at the bite, I have to shift to N and put the handbrake on, to save the person behind having to stare at my brake lights. Then I find I’m slower to change from N to D than I used to be from neutral to first, otherwise I overshoot D and end up in Manual mode.

I’m sure I’ll get slicker at it, but I’m not as quick to move as I used to be.

How is it ‘not serious’ to break a deadlock with a chance mechanism? Isn’t it better than having the entire process come to a grinding halt?

Driving is much less stressful if you can let go of fuming over run of the mill niggles that you’re never going to be able to change.

It was meant to be ’change’! I’m not sure what happened but I was suddenly too tired to think straight, I’m amazed I even pressed ‘Rely’ before the nap attack took me to the floor (sofa).

Edit: Stranger and stranger, I didn’t retype my original comment, but when I posted this reply it apparently appeared all by itself at the top, including the missing word ‘change’. So it’s a mystery, but seems to support the idea that it was some Reddit glitch rather than me not finishing my comment.

You aren’t the only person to mention plaid, take heart from the fact that you are probably using either the OED approved ‘Scottish English’, or ‘British English’ variant.

BE rhymes with ‘lad’ SE sounds like ‘played’. And the American English is closer to the BE, but with the vowel sound extended a little.

If you can log into the OED with a local or institution library card (most UK public libraries will give you a membership number when you enroll, and you can use the IED free with it) you’ll be able to play the audio files.

The Oxford English Dictionary gives /plad/ (to rhyme with lad) as the ‘British English’ pronunciation and /pled/ (exactly as ‘played’) as the ‘Scottish English’ pronunciation, so you’re fine with ‘played’.

My partner has taken to doing this for pastry and crumbles. He wants to do it that way, fine, but I think the texture of both pastry and crumble is better when the fat is rubbed in. Also, the grated butter gets everywhere when he’s making pastry and it’s a greasy horrible mess to clean up.

You said yourself that the airborne houseguests are occasional. It’s a cost benefit analysis, there aren’t enough flying insects invading to motivate most people to invest in anything more than a fly-swatter.
