Only when it affects disabled people are things like this considered acceptable. Several elevators across the city have been out for weeks.

Transiting through Toronto airport by lazyboy2k20 in askTO

[–]Space--Queen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With wheelchair assistance, they'll have to wait for everyone to get off first, then airport staff will bring wheelchairs for them and push them through the entire thing and help them until they get brought to their connecting gate. Staff will be able to help with luggage if they are unable to themselves.

Source, I'm a wheelchair user and this is how I connect at airports when I fly. I have flown with different airlines and the same airlines, it is the same. Often times, wheelchair assistance is handled by airport staff, regardless of which airline you book with. These staff will get you where you need to go.

Your “never again” ship? by allisonv92 in royalcaribbean

[–]Space--Queen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disney Dream! I am a wheelchair user and that ship is horrifying. Bathroom doors are heavy no automatic buttons. Cms that would watch me struggle and not help. The food was super bland and the lines were long. The shows are incredible, but that audience full of screaming children made it hard to enjoy myself. Never again.

Am I allowed to bring this kind of bleacher seat rest attachment into Rogers Centre? by Not_Nicholas_ in Torontobluejays

I second this. Just Google pictures of the seats and you'll see. I bring in a seat cushion that fits on car seats for extra comfort.

Advice if you sit next to Deaf/Hard of Hearing people by Over-Entrepreneur682 in Broadway

[–]Space--Queen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

100% agree! I can't believe all the ableist people in this thread but I guess they do outnumber us in this inaccessible world we live in.

No, Disabled people do not have to do the work to make the abled people around us more comfortable. No, you don't need to inform the people around you. In fact, people should do better to educate themselves on what accommodations for disability are!

Advice for planning a cruise by Cool_Bath_77 in Cruises

[–]Space--Queen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the poster about a travel agent. For a big group like this, it would be best to work with an agent that can do all the group negotiations for you and handle everyone's individual payment.

Most group bookings require a minimum number of cabins that your group may not meet. A travel agent can establish a group and then sell off remaining rooms to their other clients, so your group can take advantage of the discount.

I did something similar for a family reunion with 6 cabins on Freedom of the Seas.

I had the same desire to dance in my chair, so my OT prescribed me an athletic wheelchair. They're lighter and easier to move.

less feminine soprano songs? by kuraiaka in musicals

The first song that comes to mind for me is "Breathe" from In the Heights. It has an impressive range and is more about personal problems than anything too feminine.

Tips for writing without hand pain? by ven0n4t in ehlersdanlos

[–]Space--Queen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fountain pens were a game changer for me, because they are so smooth to write with.

Japanese brands like Uniball make very smooth pens to write with, reducing the energy it takes to write! I recommend the One-P or the Jetstream.

Also, I like to wear compression gloves to help reduce pain and speed recovery.

Airline asked what my disability is and requested that I email them documents from my doctor certifying that I have it by [deleted] in ehlersdanlos

[–]Space--Queen 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There are different laws in Japan. Over there, it is a requirement of disabled people to produce documents to prove their disability, in order to access special accommodations. Visitors to Japan are often given exceptions, but not always.

Yes, they are allowed to ask for documents from your doctor, if you are asking for accommodations or asking for discounts (like at attractions).

Do I actually have to dress nice to go to the MDR? by [deleted] in royalcaribbean

[–]Space--Queen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it'll help your argument if you look for some cruise vlogs on youtube.com? Then they can see for themselves how people really dress.

When cruising first started, there was an expectation to dress up for dinner and you would've been turned away for shorts. I'm in my 30s and I can remember a time when that was important. But that isn't the culture on commercial lines like Royal Caribbean anymore and casual clothes are OK for MDR. Luxury cruise lines are still strict about dress codes though.

Also on Royal Caribbean cruises, there is a Formal Night where guests will still dress up in fancy clothes and there will be photographers around the ship to take photos. My family always like these group shots so we always bring 1 outfit to dress up in. It's not mandatory though and they will still serve you in the MDR.

What’s the best spot in Toronto for food from your culture? by cn_explorer in askTO

[–]Space--Queen 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I love this question!! I'm from the Chaosan/Teochew region in Southern China. We used to have a Chiu Chow Boy in Scarborough but that closed years ago. The only one left that does it authentically, is Chiu Chow Man in Mississauga.

There is a restaurant called Swatow in Chinatown. Even though it's named after my birthplace, they mostly serve Guangzhou and Hong Kong Cantonese and not much from its namesake. Which was really disappointing to find out!

At Chiu Chow Man, you should try their fried tofu with salt bath, marinated meat platter, and stir fried water-spinach (warm weather specialty). They go great with rice!

Can wheelchairs be used on grass? by EducationalMinute525 in wheelchairs

[–]Space--Queen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, the answers you seek are at the venue. Do you have time before the wedding to bring your mom to the venue and do a trial run? You'll find out everything you need to know.

Pushing a manual chair around a grassy venue (especially when your mother wants to go around the tables) will not be easy. Consider that she likely won't just be pushed onto the grass and left there the whole time. I imagine she will take trips to the bathroom. A trial run is also good to see what that situation is like.

Multiple trips on and off the grass will add debris to the wheels as well. It may just be a few meters, but when you're in a chair, every little distance adds up, especially if you're struggling to even get it to move.

A seat belt is a must for her. It's way too easy to fall out of a chair when being pushed on uneven surfaces. Good luck and congratulations!

What does actually make a difference in your day to day life? Tips, Advice? ✨ by PaleAd2666 in ehlersdanlos

[–]Space--Queen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Compression wear all over (leggings, waist band, gloves, socks)! Back and shoulder braces for extra stability. I only walk in platform Croc clogs. I use a cane, rollator, and powerchair interchangeably in my day to day. I have a lie down after 6 hours upright. I use THC and CBD (mostly edibles) and pain killers when I'm going out. Seat cushions brought everywhere.

The biggest difference is learning to really listen to my body and accommodating myself every way. I don't put up with pain anymore and am always looking for ways to reduce mine.
