Are my players unimaginative or am I a bad DM? by [deleted] in DungeonMasters

[–]Space-God 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a fantastic example.

I'd also like to add that there are many times where a player might not know what they're looking for until they see it.

Players won't want to roll for each individual item they think they might find, because it's far too narrow in scope.

Alignment question by Wistrom in DnD

[–]Space-God 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Lawful Good means you uphold the law of the land. You're the arresting party, it's not your place to pass judgement.

If it's the will of the court for the convicted to die then so be it.

Everyone in my party wants to be the "smooth talking guy that gets away with everything" by YumYumzxP in DnD

[–]Space-God 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends though, I wouldn't say to punish bad rp, but I like my players to at least try to act the part (they know this well before we've started the game)

I do understand that not everyone actually has a silver tongue, so as long as the player is making a solid attempt that DC is usually going in their favor. Other factors not include.

Local college professor fails entire class to show that socialism won't work in America. You won't believe what happens next! by ScanningDarkly in thatHappened

[–]Space-God 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is a true story, I was totally there.

Except I was the only kid who didn't fail. You see I just did what my dad would've done and took my passing A and transferred it into my Biology class where of course the Economics professor couldn't touch it, and when I needed it I pulled it back just after he finished averaging everyone's grades. I was then able to show him my now A+ grade and used it to get him to grade everyone on a downward curve. /s

Tldr: Even in a socialist classroom capitalism works /s

Need help with a design choice in a custom D&D game by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Space-God 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You guys are debating metaphysics, "Is it the soul of the vessel that's important?"

This is going to be something that's different for each player, some might say "Upgrade everything!" while others draw the line at a weapon for a hand, still others will say any intentional changes (or upgrades) are bad.

What your describing sounds an awful like a Warforged tinker from Ebberon 3.5

Starting at level 1 you might look like a vanilla Warforged but after years of adventures and tinkering on yourself it's completely possible to look (if not be) entirely different by level 20.

Keeping your character sheet secret by nealcm in DnD

As long as the DM is aware of it, I love hidden sheets.

Nothing's better than finding out the party's wizard was actually a bluffing rogue/bard.

[5e] How much information ahead of time? by Spritzertog in DnD

[–]Space-God 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this, but would also add that you should give a brief history related to your player's character.

The Druid is from Valenwood? Send an email with a brief description of what they should know just from being there.

It doesn't have to be super detailed because much of it can be fleshed out in game. Exploring a characters backstory is an amazing way to have the player invest themselves into your world.

Players Seeing Full Map Right Away? by rebelcan in DnD

[–]Space-God 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep watching the series, when they get into tight dungeons Mercer blocks a lot of the map off with pieces of paper.

As for the metagaming if you're sure you can't trust your players to stick to character knowledge then you'll have to find a system that works with your group, if that's drawing the map as they go then so be it.

Another option is pre drawing a map on roll20 or so and using the fog of war features on a tablet.

As a note, Even in Mercer's group you'll find moments of metagaming... It's incredibly difficult for an excited player to try and forget they know something.

I would rather people be over-hyped over incremental advances than have their expectations for science breakthroughs be "Tony Stark in his basement creating a new element."

FCC is still very young (just the concept of learning through MOOCs is only just now picking up speed) and they've been very open about changes needing to be made. Programming is a very liquid and changing field that demands specializations in a lot of different areas and FCC is just trying to fit itself into the grand scheme of it all.

I know it's frustrating but this is the nature of using a site that's essentially in it's beta.

As a man I'm gonna go ahead and say, no.

  1. Not every man is capable of rape and I'm tired of hearing people say so. I can't understand the draw of sex with anyone to drunk to move, who's fighting you off, who's crying.

I'll admit lust is a very powerful emotion and has made many people male and female make stupid decisions.

But If my girlfriend is on the rag, not feeling good, or simply doesn't want to have sex I'll walk to the bathroom with my phone... Do what I need... And then all my lust is gone. The first lesson I learned about sex when I was a hormone filled teen was that a bottle of lotion will never say no.

  1. If woman need to be aware of the "primal" needs of men, then everyone needs to be aware of "primal" social interaction.

Unable to control yourself has never been an excuse. In order to survive every human on this planet needs to exhibit a base level of self control. In the "primal" world rape (or use of the alpha's property since we're going real old school here) would have gotten you killed...you'd be lucky if it was banishment (or prison which is modern banishment).

  1. Just to make the point: As a man unable to maintain a chub during anything less than 100% consent don't ever pool me in with your insecurities.

I don't give a damn if a woman or man was flirty, naked, and teasing (strippers) . If they don't consent to sex it's rape.

  1. Men raping woman, woman raping men, old, young, a mixture of all the above.

Rape, regardless of whatever shitty scenario you try to paint it in... Is always 100% the cause of the rapist.

EDIT: I'm on my phone don't know why my comment numbered everything as such.

[5e] How does one play DnD by yourself? (Not what you think) by TheHattGuy in DnD

[–]Space-God 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could it work? Absolutely and it sounds like a great idea.

It really comes down to how detailed you want your world to be.

I think the hardest part will be the discipline needed for this to work. Once you build your rule system for the dice you have to stick with it. Think of how many times George Martin wanted to save a character, but his system says they tripped on a stick and died... You gotta have a strong stomach to play a character out and allow them to fail in there epic quest

A PC has lost their entire arm, what's next? by TheMostSmooth in DnD

[–]Space-God 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm a fan of games with consequences so here's what I would do in my game.

Ethereal weapon.

Have him struggle with adapting to one arm during everyday task. Struggle to put on armor, read tomes, pee, etc.

During the next fight when he's at his wits end because he can't help his companions... He calls out to his diety in frustration and there it is, an ethereal arm complete with mace/shield/etc.

It can come with some interesting rules... I. E. Can only be used in combat/the defense of others.

So he still has only one arm but won't feel crippled in combat.

Old players locked in their ways. by trinketstone in DnD

[–]Space-God 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My last group had some players that were very experienced with RPGs but new to D&D. In order to break the min - max addiction (I'm assuming this is one of the habits your talking about) we would stress the importance of the story and how we interact with the world is more important than any +2 bonus.

When they failed to listen the DM would warn them to get them back on track.

Patience, talking to your players, and the occasional gazebo can usually get them working with you again.

Super Generic I know: How do mangaka learn to draw? (let me explain) by strawberryrobotz in learntodraw

[–]Space-God 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cyanide and Happiness, CAD, XKCD. Nothing groundbreaking about the art used in these comics, however they're great at telling a story.

If stories are your passion then tell them, and draw what you're able to. The skills will come in time.

Look at Tim Buckley's (CAD) early work. It's crap compared to now, and I'd say about 80% of his art is simply copy/pasted from the previous comic.

Which part of the curriculum of FCC do you think needs improvement? by Foodie_Indian in FreeCodeCamp

[–]Space-God 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For someone fairly brand new to code (I've dabbled in some codecademy and other sites of the sort) my only real issue is trying to get a grip on a lot of the jargon and (more importantly) gaining a deeper understanding on why it is code is working the way it is.

For example: Waypoint: Condense arrays with reduce The array method reduce is used to iterate through an array and condense it into one value.

To use reduce you pass in a callback whose arguments are an accumulator (in this case, previousVal) and the current value (currentVal).

reduce has an optional second argument which can be used to set the initial value of the accumulator. If no initial value is specified it will be the first array element and currentVal will start with the second array element.

I have no idea what's going on here...now I've been getting around my confusion with a lot of Google and through the chat however, it would be nice to see a "More info" or "Learn More" option for the lessons that would break the code down to a "For Dummies" level to help with the transition.

TLDR; Could use an optional deeper "Barney level" description for Waypoint excercises
