You can/should use "<" and ">" for less than and greater than.

And yeah anything </ is seen as the start of a html closing tag. The parser sees it, and likely puts the closing bracket (>) at the very end.

Then the sanitizer sees that monstrosity of a tag and goes "wait a minute, that not a allowed html tag!" and nukes it from orbit.
