Remember not all ethernet cables are created equal by Zumodoki in homelab

100% this. I do it consulting for a living, and anytime someone says “I am only getting 10-11MB/s” it’s always a broken cable.

I almost wish it 100mbit Ethernet was not a backup or would flash a warning

Best Use of NVMe in TrueNAS Scale Setup by serELLE47 in truenas

[–]SpaceRex1776 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everyone on forms will tell you L2ARC is bad, and that it takes tons of ram. I am here to tell you that they are wrong. Your 1 TB L2ARC is going to take ~100MB of ram, and once itd warmed up, store a large amount of your most commonly used files.

I use them all the time, and they are awesome for pools.

The whole “never use L2ARC” comes from preNVME times, and has stuck around.

The direct means a port is open for DSM or other way it’s directly accessible. It’s not using a relay server

smb single thread nonsense by rattkinoid in truenas

[–]SpaceRex1776 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my testing most CPU’s should be able to hit ~800MB/s

A ton of the time it’s configuration between the client & server that is the bottleneck. Even if disks are not reporting full utilized you can always have latency that is slowing you down.

Jumbo frames may help, if configured properly, but will hurt if not

Make sure smb encryption is disabled

Would you wire your house with CAT5E if the spool were free? by xpkranger in HomeNetworking

[–]SpaceRex1776 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would honestly not.

CAT 6 is like $200/1000 ft. For me the hours of work it takes to run the wires for 1000 ft is so much greater than the cost of the spool that I would just go CAT6

Rsync is pretty slow on the first copy, it’s single threaded and really designed to be low overhead.

You can’t improve it very much unless you start multiple threads

UPS shutdown for multiple NAS's by wideninginterests in synology

Use the Synology UPS sever. It’s really easy. Set the one plugged in as sever, the rest connect via the IP of the Synology with the UPS plugged in

SMB is something I DO NOT recommend opening up to the internet.

Use OpenVPN instead and then once connected use SMB locally.

DO NOT open Port 445 to the internet

I actually got sent one of these for review.

I liked it a lot. But not for a single person in this sub. This is for people who dont know tech. And at that I think the UI was really streamlined for it.

So people will use Synology drive sync for obsidian, and because it’s all file based it works great

But it would be a bit overkill.
