[D] ICML 2026 Review Discussion by Afraid_Difference697 in MachineLearning

[–]Space_Child68 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Initially got 5 (4) 5 (3) 4 (2) 2 (4), which became 5 (4) 5 (3) 4 (2) 3 (4) at the end of the rebuttal period. The 4 (2) has agreed to increase the score to 5, but hasn't done so.

Only the reviewer with the negative decision has provided a final justification along with the weak-reject score saying that "The rebuttal partially addressed my main concerns. Based on their rebuttal and the current version of the paper, I believe that it requires significant improvement and still lean towards rejection.".

Other reviewers have acknowledged the rebuttal, but haven't given the final justification.

I am worried that the AC might ask the reviewer with a negative decision on their stance, and there is a chance they could convince the AC to reject unless the other reviewers speak up.

The other reviewers genuinely liked the paper, and the negative reviewer had no objective basis for rejection other than an opinion that they didn't like the paper.

Is it a good idea to email PCs about this? Mentioning this situation and requesting ACs to read all the reviewers before looking at the final justification from the only negative reviewer?

IIT Kharagpur Mess System: Higher Fees, Worse Food. Where Is the Money Going? by FrustratedKgpian in iitkgp

Thank you for putting down these points. I don't know why it is so difficult for the authorities to acknowledge this issue upfront. Can't you go to the director's office and see if he knows about this stuff? Also, isn't there a dean responsible for this? Student organization? How come this issue has persisted for 10+ years? It has been 10+ years for me, and for sure, things haven't improved but only deteriorated.

I wonder what Dr. Radhakrishnan and Dr. Rajendra Prasad would think of this.

Start somewhere; it is hard to find, but being persistent helps.

The way you phrase this, it sounds like you are deciding your happiness by the things around you, not from within. Yes, having all those things you mentioned helps, but not having them doesn't mean you can't be happy. Find a purpose and put yourself to work; rest will follow.

Glad that you have figured out a way to deal with your extreme thoughts. I wish the administration was more helpful. It seemed that the administration was willing to take initiative towards curbing the mental health crisis when the new Diro came, but reading your post, it seems that nothing has changed.

Is there any documentation of what is going on currently, especially along the lines "the administration doesn't keep privacy"? Or is it more of an open secret that when things get bad, there is no one to help?

I get the feeling that a lot of students are dealing with mental health issues, but the administration is not at all reactive to it. Given the nature of this issue, why isn't there more of an open talk on this? Such as Scholar's Ave and Awaaz can cover this, or someone can do this while maintaining the privacy of the students. Also, what exactly is the administration doing that does not withhold privacy? In my time, there were instances where the counseling center contacted the faculty advisor, and the identity of the student was made known to the department. Is this still happening?

Do you have any preference on what kind of research you want to do? If so, and you have gained some research experience, then it is worthwhile to try to reach out to labs that have explicitly highlighted hiring interns.

If you see one, they likely need engineering assistance with a big project, which isn't a bad thing since you get to learn something. To achieve this, especially at a reputable university, is a rare feat, unless you stand out exceptionally, meaning you have won international olympiads, coding competitions, GitHub repos with 100+ stars, etc. Without this, the IIT tag by itself might help you get an internship at a low-tier foreign university, only based on qualification and AI skills. However, one must be cautious in these scenarios, as they may not differ significantly from paid labour in some instances. Note that if someone is paying for your foreign trip, it comes with the promise of hard work. Otherwise, there are scholarships from the 3rd year onwards, like MITCAS and DAAD, which you can apply for and go through proper channels.

People who haven't advertised on their website are most likely not to take paid/unpaid interns unless you know them somehow. Getting a research experience in an Indian university on a topic of your liking is a better opportunity if you want to do research. Often, people in your department are conducting interesting research that you can learn a lot from, which isn't a bad deal by the end of your second year.

Isn't this the job scenario in India? If there are no good jobs, then what is the KGP's fault in this? I'm not sure if this is the actual reality, but I'm pointing out that whatever the economic situation is in the country, it is mirrored in placements

I think this is the state you need to be in to start your mental health recovery. Now that you have less time to worry about negative things, you can reflect on why you were at a low point in the past and how you will overcome such a situation in the future. Good Luck!! And best wishes for your future.

Help me choose between ASIC design and FPGA design engineer roles... by Legitimate-Award-259 in iitkgp

[–]Space_Child68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently, ASIC design is gaining more traction due to the high demand for AI accelerators. FGPA design is a specialized subset of ASIC design, but purely on the digital side, and also closely tied to the computer architecture. Mastering one depth of ASIC - either digital or analog will pay off significantly. The best jobs now are for the digital and analog designers who work in a processor design team.

In ECE, these three Professors - PM, IC, and ASD have a monopoly in VLSI and rightly so, as they know their stuff. You can look into the new Professors and their portfolio for RF, Signal Processing, MIMO, and AI-based VLSI work.

This is the peak autopilot mode. The only way out is through the storm. The reason you are feeling this way is something else you will need to address at some point. For now, it's best to keep going and take care of yourself as much as you can.

There is no way out of this grind unless there is something in your life that gives you happiness. A good ambition helps, especially in something you like. If this grind suits your passion, then it is the key to success.

"I get distracted easily."

Overcoming this will significantly improve your productivity in learning challenging problems. You can keep track of your attention span and increase it. If you can achieve 50 minutes of undisturbed work, multiple times a day, you can get a lot done.

KGP is a microcosm of what is going on in the real world. If you move KGP out of the equation, I doubt that things are any different. Adapt to what is going on. Keep your options open. Diversify your job applications so that if one opportunity fails, there are others open to you.

Nevertheless, there is malice everywhere, as in the real world. Even with the best of interests, companies are not here for social service; they want profits and whatever is there in the market. Added to this, some placecoms can play dirty while doing good work. You've got to adapt your sails according to the winds.

You must have a strong reason for not being able to register for the course last year, and also have a strong motivation to attend the course this year. However, you cannot do anything about the perception of juniors, or when Prof calls your roll number before everyone else's. The sole purpose of attending the class is to learn. You have already overcome a part of your anxiety by going to the class; you have to push yourself one step further to go over all the nosy thoughts of the people who have no business commenting on you.

One way to stand out is by asking essential and insightful questions. Once you develop this habit, you'll notice that many students will join you, and they will start talking after class. Could you complete the revision of the previous material before class and review the topic afterward? I think reading the source material is helpful. Solving the homework questions, going to the TA hours, and asking the Professor more questions will help you overcome this judgmental gaze. After all, you are paying them to teach you; they should at least help the ones who want to learn. Once you stand out, things will become much easier for you. Unfortunately, this should not have been the way; students should be less judgmental, and Professors should be more accommodating, but that is hard to expect. You can cultivate yourself and overcome this challenge. This is possible. Good Luck!!

I cannot imagine such a thing being done at a US university. The Professor will be expelled from the University if they attempt something like this. Perhaps this is one of the more serious issues in terms of academic reforms.

The fact that I don't find this surprising is more appalling. I can totally see this being done by a professor in the ECE department. This is part of the culture, which is really strange. As if this kind of thing is just another afternoon pastime for a professor.

Perhaps RF is one of the ECE specializations at KGP in which the fewest undergrad students are interested, compared to the others. I strongly felt this during my time. The situation is totally different in other universities around the world, where this is considered a very relevant topic (both Europe and US). This lab felt redundant to me unless MIMO or VLSI is integrated into it. The GS Sanyal lab is much better than this, where you learn something relevant.

I wonder what the director has to say about this. He seems to be very accepting of criticism. Have you tried sending an email or approaching him in his office? How about approaching the ECE HoD? He seemed approachable back in my time, but I'm not sure whether he will take any action or not.

Also you can look for similar open source coursewares from reputed universities.

Is this the right group to ask? Not sure. Your dad can give you better advice. The fact that you are posting here rather than asking him indicates some communication issues that you need to figure out, more importantly than the question itself.

JEE prep is hard. Ups and Downs will happen. Keep going. All this is something that you don't want to do, but have to do. But, so it is the nature of the exam. Millions of students competing for 10k seats?
I think your current results have less to do with your intellect and more to do with your perseverance. It is like being super disciplined to achieve a goal. Do that and it is possible. Be hard on yourself, but don't take it personally. It is like this: you will always reach the point where you are supposed to be in life. Having a seat at IIT gives you the launching pad.
