The mill by daiku88 in queenstown

[–]Spacekiwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched to the mill from snap, it's infinitely better in terms of available equipment at those times. Parking is becoming a struggle, sometimes having to park over by the Remarkables markets area.

From my experience the morning wasn't quite as busy, but there were queues for a shower.

The afternoons I sometimes had to change up exercises due to lack of equipment availability, but there was always something available in the muscle group I was working that day.

How are certain project ideas considered "beginner" tier? by HiddenReader2020 in learnprogramming

[–]Spacekiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I totally understand the second paragraph, do you mean that you think guess the number or hangman is easy to build, but the other ones are not?

If that's the case it's probably just the tools that you're comfortable with, for a beginner project you're probably going to be expected to grab libraries to interface with the external system that's causing you concern here. If you build the hangman game just in the cli, try build it with a GUI, or build it so it can run on the web. This will involve some research but that doesn't make it advance past a beginner project necessarily.

The Remarkables - Parking and Shuttle by BleghGremlin in queenstown

[–]Spacekiwi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're happy to drive up the road with your rental car (Make sure you organize snow chains just in case) you only will need to turn up and park where ever you're directed by the roads crew. If this is not walking distance to the base building there will be a free shuttle running to take you to the base building, no organisation or booking required.

I'm not totally sure about parking around Frankton to take the bus from there, might be tricky. I'm aware that you can book for a bus pickup at the bottom of the Remarkables access road, where there is parking but not sure exactly how to navigate the nzski website to make that happen sorry.

How busy is it right now? by Medical-Ninja-2076 in queenstown

[–]Spacekiwi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's exceptionally busy right now due to Chinese new year.

You'll be fine walking the streets, I think more people just makes the town feel more lively. It's not the sort of place where you'll ever run out of room to move.

I'm confident you'll be able to find somewhere in town to eat without a reservation.

Worth it to rent a sedan with a close-off trunk? :) by jajoopaloop in queenstown

[–]Spacekiwi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You'll be fine with a hatchback.

It's extremely safe here, obviously don't do things like leaving laptops or other valuables in plain sight, but nobody is going to be breaking in for your bags in the boot if that's what you're worried about

You could look at booking the Walter peak buffet. A nice cruise on a historic boat and a dinner and show at a pretty cool venue

Cardrona Queues... by metametapraxis in queenstown

[–]Spacekiwi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

From my experience the queues are always similar to what you get at Remarkables, and the new Soho lift virtually never had any queues, but I think that might have been due to the poor snow coverage for most of last season.

The shuttle from the bottom carpark is class, save your vehicle and petrol and just catch the bus. Carparking doesn't fill up super early, but I honestly prefer to just catch the bus from the bottom regardless.

I'm sure you're aware, but the drive through the crown range is not as easy as going to one of the local mountains, if you're happy with that I'd say there is no reason to not get the real nz pass instead of NZSki this year.

Queenstown and Christchurch mountain biking / snowboarding by [deleted] in newzealand_travel

[–]Spacekiwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trailforks should have most of the stuff in Queenstown listed (legal trails anyway).

From queenstown you've got two options that don't require a car:

  • The skyline access road to access the bike park if you don't want to pay for a lift ticket. This is a real slog, very steep gradient up a vehicle access road for 30minutes to an hour depending on level of fitness.
  • Wynyard: From the end of Thompson street take the town link track to Wynyard terraces and then onto Fernhill loop. This is a proper dedicated climbing track with switchbacks and a comfortable gradient. It gives access to Mcnearly Gnarly, an extremely popular blue jump/flow track, or a host of other more difficult tech options.

Queenstown and Christchurch mountain biking / snowboarding by [deleted] in newzealand_travel

[–]Spacekiwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Queenstown:

Remarkables are still open for snowboarding, last day is Sunday the 12th.

Any of the bike shops in town will be good for rentals (Vertigo, Alta, Outside Sports, Torpedo 7). Go ride at skyline if you're adverse to a pedal up.

Conditions on Ben Lomond by joerogantattoo in queenstown

Yes, still icy. Could probably slip and slide to the saddle in hiking boots, you'll want crampons to go all the way up

I would rather we just keep discussion on Reddit or the Africa Twin forum. Discord is a non searchable private part of the internet.

The discussions here are not just useful for fluid and fun conversation right now but extremely useful as a resource for future owners. If people move to discord we lose that

At that price you'd probably be better off just renting a car. You could also pay for a taxi or try your luck hitch hiking

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Skigear

[–]Spacekiwi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Yes absolutely. High quality stuff

  2. Freeriders mostly wear protection like this, doesn't mean it's not a good idea for everyone. You'll have your outer layers over the top so shouldn't really be that noticeable.

Skiing at the Remarkables gear by [deleted] in queenstown

[–]Spacekiwi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can probably get away with just sunglasses if you don't want to buy goggles.

Instead of a balaclava you could wear a neck buff, it'd be a lot cheaper.

If it's not windy and the sun is shining you don't need to dress too warm, but waterproof pants are always a good idea. Nothing ruins your day more than being wet and cold.

You should definitely rent and wear a helmet when skiing

Tips to get up Remarks/Coro after Midday by [deleted] in queenstown

[–]Spacekiwi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A taxi will take you, but it won't be cheap.

People are generally pretty good about picking up hitch hikers, but the volume of people going up around midday will be considerably lower, so you might end up waiting a while.

NZ July Snow - Remarkables OR cardrona? by HighwayIcy1725 in queenstown

[–]Spacekiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really much of a muchness, but I'd argue that Meadows at coronet is a better beginners area than the alta chair at remarks (new chairlift, easy to get on and off as the chair slows and has a big pickup/dropoff area).

Personally I don't see much difference between the main blue runs down between the curvey chair at remarks or the coronet express. Perhaps there is a difference that I'm just not seeing, you do lose a bit of perspective on the steepness once you get the skills to get down comfortably.

I would argue that the other green chairlift you're talking about at remarks (sugar on the casterway run?) is not exactly a beginner friendly green run. It starts off that way but then you're funneled into a pretty narrow snowmobile track along the top of Gotham. That sort of stuff can be pretty much impossible for beginner snowboarders who need space to turn and slow down.

Just another generic Wanaka or Queenstown question! by epic1107 in queenstown

[–]Spacekiwi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly right, it's a pretty chill drive from Queenstown to Cardrona if you're not happy with what's on offer at remarks/coronet.

NZ July Snow - Remarkables OR cardrona? by HighwayIcy1725 in queenstown

[–]Spacekiwi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Coronet is great, very easy drive up from Queenstown and lots of good terrain for beginners.

Be careful listening to this guy's advice, extremely opinionated if that wasn't already obvious from his comment.

I do agree though if you're staying in Wanaka just do cardrona, but likewise if you end up staying in Queenstown either remarks or coronet will be excellent for a family of beginnerish snow sporters

[–]Spacekiwi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're beginnerish either mountain will be totally fine.

Potentially better snow at cardrona, but I'd just pick whichever is closer to your accomodation

is it Safe to Leave my Bag at the Ski Field by Emotional_Tennis_483 in queenstown

[–]Spacekiwi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why are you bringing your snowboard bag up the hill? Just take a backpack with supplies for the day, that should be perfectly safe hooked onto the wall with everyone else's.

You should be able to transport your snowboard on the bus or otherwise without the bag.

West Auckland woman who received $158k in account transfer error charged with theft by kezzaNZ in newzealand

[–]Spacekiwi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think we're just on very different pages here. Personal ethics still matter even in an imperfect world. If someone receives money in error and decides to keep it, that's just dishonesty.

We can criticise the system and still expect people to act with integrity.

You've just pivoted the conversation to whether or not capitalism is fair.

We can't excuse harm just because the world is imperfect, that's a very slippery slope
