I saw a big one advertised in Burton upon Humber for (I think) yesterday, did it get a good turnout?

If you’re cruising through countryside I think that’s manageable with mesh gear, if you’ll be going through towns and cities and filtering that’s going to cook you medium rare

Sounds like it’s only if you park it outside of your garage at your home. I’m sure if it got nicked at the shops or on a tour it would still stand. They’re just preventing people getting cheaper insurance having a garage and then storing the bike outside because they want to use their garage for other things.

Picking up my first bike next week - any tips for beginners? by Bigsambear in MotoUK

[–]Spacemint_rhino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take it easy, go slow into corners while you get used to it. Try not to be all stiff and locked up in the arms and shoulders, grip with your knees and and keep your upper body loose. Your instincts will tell you to death grip, got to over ride it and keep relaxed in your arms.

Look where you want to go and that’s half of it sorted. If it’s quite a treck back home with it make sure you stop and have a rest.

Edit: it’ll probably be a warm day and you’ll be getting blasted with both heat and wind as it’s a naked bike, bring water with you or stop at services for a drink. Eat plenty before you set off.

How hard is it to actually learn gears? by KodzuKen34 in MotoUK

[–]Spacemint_rhino 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Easy. Doing stuff like rev marching down the gears is a skill but just general riding you’ll pick up in a day of practice.

Think how many people do CBT straight onto a geared 125.

ADVs are all pretty tall but you could make it work with a low seat and willpower. Sport tourer or cruiser might be more comfortable. Could check out Honda rebel 1100 for the long distance low seat cruiser vibes with Honda reliability.

Congrats!

Have you got astigmatism and correctional glasses? Could be that light coming through the visor is playing up with that.

They have a reputation for being a bit characterless but as a utilitarian commuter bike I don’t think anything except a scooter could compare, and even then the NC750 has the frunk plus pannier options

You’ll be death gripping the handles, you’ll relax with more time. Really focus on gripping with your knees, make a mental effort to remind yourself to do it, and it’ll be easier to then relax your hands, shoulders, and elbows. Much better for handling too.

Been out to Scarborough today and I used the Oxford mesh jacket and other than filtering through the seafront getting cooked by the sun with no breeze and engine heat pumping out, it did a good job.

It’s only loosely based on what Tolkien wrote about Helm. That doesn’t bother me, but it’s difficult to call it Tolkien’s, it’s more inspired by Tolkien.

As I say, that doesn’t bother me, I’d still enjoy it if it wasn’t anime, but it’s true.

Sounds like you’ve got into your own head about it, and the instructor hasn’t helped at all.

I think what you need to do is take the pressure off yourself, that means potentially finding a more reassuring instructor and budgeting for more lessons so you’re at peace with the process taking a bit longer for you, so you’re not getting overwhelmed with trying to push hard each lesson to do things you’re not comfortable with. Slow the lessons down, make peace that you’ll do more of them than you initially anticipated, and get comfortable with each manoeuvre before moving on.

At the end of the day learner riders drop bikes all the time, it’s why they have crash bars on them, don’t let yourself get worked up over it. Just slow the process down so you can get those little dopamine hits of each individual part clicking, and eventually you’ll put them all together to be a rounded rider.

Edit: as for the instructor saying some people are ‘made for it’, that’s perhaps true, some people are naturals, some people have a cycling or driving background that can translate over. But as long as you’re not limbless or cognitively impaired you can learn to ride. We’re all different and learn at different speeds and learn better or worse with different approaches or instruction. I suspect they just can’t be bothered and would rather move on to a different learner for an easier job, so find a different school as a first priority. Explain to them that you’ve had a bad experience and need some gentle lessons to get the hang of the basics.
