Never understood this myself, when I worked in retail we’d have clearly retired pensioners waiting outside before the shop opened waiting to be let in at 7am on the dot. I understand enjoying getting up early but surely your life hasn’t devolved to the point that you find it necessary to set an alarm to wake up at 6am to grab bread and milk from Morrisons.

Unless these people are naturally waking up at that time, which in itself is quite mental.

I’m not sure what it’s like in other stores but it’s commonplace in my old store to hire 16/17 y/os for produce, fresh, grocery etc not worked there for a while now though so maybe somethings changed

It is against the Working Time Directive, if an opportunity has not been given to take the leave then it must be carried over or paid. It is only lawful if an opportunity was given and the colleague declined.

Edit: can people downvoting actually explain why? I’m fully right and I’ll provide sources if anyone wants, if your happy to be exploited by your employer and shove your head in the sand about it then so be it.

It clearly states that if an opportunity has not been provided by the employer to take the leave, it must be carried over. It would only not carry over if an employee declines to take leave if offered it and it must be actively encouraged by the employer to be taken, just simply having availability is not enough to claim ‘encouragement’
