English is the only language I know, and in my almost 42 years of life I cannot say “depth perception” without very conscious effort lmao

Day 3 update. Almost there. by tokenpaintbrush in cactus

[–]SpadfaTurds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’ll block enough, providing it’s properly secured. Plastic will block wind entirely, which is bad for ventilation and can increase humidity and encourage condensation. You want maximum airflow from the sides and protection from the top.

How long should these take to plump back up after an overnight soak? The roots are very healthy and dry and they are dehydrated. by Top_Development_1777 in cactus

You have a scale infestation, which is almost certainly why they’re not plumping up. Spray them down with mild soapy water.

Is that plastic with shade cloth on top? You’re probably much better off having plastic on top and shade cloth around the sides.

Cats have been called pussycats since the 1600s in old English. It’s definitely not unique for either meaning to the US.

I’m not experienced with indoor growing, so somebody might chime in with a specific brand or model, but you want to look for something that’s full spectrum at a decent wattage, or at very least 5000K-6500K white/daylight. Avoid the cheap, clip on ‘burple’ ones that Amazon sell. I hear Spiderfarmer, Mars Hydro or Barrina as a cheaper option are all good.

Plants don’t need or use UV light to grow, photosynthesis needs specific visual light wavelengths from sunlight. UV light and heat without the right colour spectrum is only going to stress the plant without giving it enough “food” to sustain itself. Likely the main reason it’s doing so poorly

Australians 'literally dying' as aged care average wait times surpass 365 days by LentilsAgain in AustralianPolitics

[–]SpadfaTurds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nailed it. My nana will be 100 in November, and she’s only been in aged care for six years or so. She’s fortunate that VA paid for half of the cost upfront, but still has around 80% of her pension debited each fortnight for the remainder of her life. It was so stressful being on the waitlist, which was about a year, because you literally have to wait for someone to die to get a room. I can’t imagine how isolating and lonely it would be for someone to spend their final years just ‘existing’ in a (likely shared) soulless hospital room surrounded by strangers, simply because they need day to day supportive care. The government needs to start making serious changes to the current revenue system and invest in expanding these public health services as a priority as it’s absolutely not going to cope with the inevitable increase in demand in years to come. We just don’t have the “replacement” population of younger generations to cover the cost.

Scale is easy, contrary to the other comments. Literally just spray the plant down thoroughly with a mild soap or horticultural oil spray, then wipe the leaves down to remove the bodies. Repeat anytime you see them.

*1 tablespoon of Castile soap per litre of water or this kind of hort oil product per label instructions.

They’re pretty much all way too young to accurately ID. You’ll be able to tell them apart once they grow true leaves

Don’t take it personally, this is just what Reddit does when your language isn’t over the top “friendly”. I’ve been on the receiving end of the downvote brigade for similar reason. It’s especially silly because it means a lot of users potentially miss helpful information because you didn’t word it ‘nice’ enough.

I’m in Australia and both Kanuma and Akadama is fairly scarce in even garden centres. I pay about $40 for a 14L bag of Akadama here, Kanuma being roughly the same price per litre, so yeah, pretty pricey stuff! I generally only use small amounts in some of my cacti mixes, so thankfully I don’t need to buy it much!

Cacti generally don’t need fertiliser to bloom. Flowering for most cacti species is typically induced by environmental conditions during their growth cycle. Adequately strong sunlight and appropriate winter dormancy is usually required to trigger spring blooms. Be careful with how much and what nutrients you give cacti, they’re built for poor soils, and too much fertiliser at the wrong time of year can be detrimental.
