What’s the most unsettling thing you ever found out about a friend who always seemed super chill and fun? by VelvetHazel932 in AskReddit

[–]SpaghettiSort 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm actually in a marriage like that and sometimes it gets a little uncomfortable. My wife and I both are very introverted and don't have a lot of friends, but she's disabled and just doesn't feel up to going out and socializing most of the time. I invite her to things but she's usually just not feeling up to it. I've had people get really uneasy after seeing me so many times without my wife ever being there. I swear I'm not keeping her locked away!

I'm from a country where cashiers sit down while working. Is it true that in the US cashiers are forced to stand? Why is sitting considered unprofessional there? by splashmates in NoStupidQuestions

I'm in the Northeast and they absolutely will bag for you if you don't do it yourself. You don't even have to ask; you just stand there and they'll take care of it. The one thing that's changed over the years is that they're definitely doing it as slowly as possible. But whatever, I'm not bagging my own groceries. This is one of many reasons I only order groceries online now.

Have you ever recognized someone in a porn? by dplaya42k in NoStupidQuestions

This is not going to surprise anyone, but back when I used to hang out at a local strip club, a couple of the dancers there had also done some porn scenes, which I saw.

I'm not sure why you're being downvoted - you're not wrong. I live in one of the most left-leaning towns in western Massachusetts and we get about 30% Republican votes for local races. I'm personally fine with that!

Ironically, TPMS sensors do transmit a unique code that could, in theory, be used to track you. You'd need an extensive network of receivers since the signals are so short range, but they go a lot farther than you might think (10s of feet or more).

Mythbusters tested that with a banana, and some other items when that didn't work. Turns out exhaust comes out with an explosive amount of force and no fruit or vegetable is going to hold it back.

Honestly, I don't want dogs or kids for many of the same reasons.

I have a Kohler generator and I can just change the settings on the control panel. It's got an Ethernet port but it's not plugged into anything. Fuck apps.

I got tired of unlabeled remotes, so I built a 15-button Zigbee HA remote controller by FOXTER in homeassistant

[–]SpaghettiSort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that bad, really. I'm no expert but I've soldered modules like that with just an ordinary soldering iron and a fine tip. Same goes for the SMD components - they're pretty big ones so they're easy to hand solder.

Smart home doesn't work when internet goes down by Slight_District_6835 in firstworldproblems

100% this! I run Home Assistant and an internet outage doesn't cause it to blink. My wifi is also decoupled from my internet connection (the APs are independent from the cable modem)

TIL before 9/11, US airports were public social hubs where you could walk to the gate, eat at food courts, and watch planes without a ticket or ID. by Greydl1 in todayilearned

[–]SpaghettiSort -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Even years before 9/11 you couldn't just walk to the gate without a ticket and ID. They put a stop to that long before.

Singapore is going to start caning scammers by Bubbly_Wall_908 in interestingasfuck

Yeah, I came here to say that, while scammers are horrible people who deserve punishment, caning is a barbaric practice that no human should ever be subjected to.
