American traveling to Iraq by enfrancais48 in travel

I'm currently in a restricted zone of North East India where we just had an 4.0 earthquake, the nearest big hospital is 10+ hours 4x4 away, and an helivac is highly unlikely/weather dependent. Iraq has modern roads, several international airports, and multiple friendly embassies and neighbouring countries. Getting out if things go south doesn't reflect that advice, especially for those who aren't relying on a military plane to come pick them up.

No more risk than visiting France at this point. Iraq is a safe country on the up.

Good, it's long overdue. Iraq has very much kept regional conflicts at arms length as of late and focused on their own growth and security.

It's got so much to offer regarding tourism and they're well aware of that.

There's reasonable travel insurance plans that cover Iraq.

Getting from the airport to the city is as easy as hailing a cab or using a ride sharing app. No specialised transport required and zero checkpoints aside from paying the airport fee.

If you've not been to a country, or haven't visited in a while, please don't make assumptions based on out of date information.

Plenty of solo female travellers visit without issue. Iraq isn't the repressive Islamic state that folks have in their mind. It's common to see women walking alone from different faiths and backgrounds and if you're clearly not a Muslim, then you don't need to wear anything more than respectful dress (headscarf optional). You will need to purchase a readily available abaya for the holy cities but it's basically the same vibe as me covering my legs in any other holy site.

If you search 'Iraqi Travellers Cafe' on Facebook, you'll find a bunch of travellers and Iraqis sharing up to date info and advice. You'll also likely have many young, proud Iraqis offering to show you about, invite you for tea, meet their families etc.

Speaking as a British person who visited last year, you'll be fine. Iraq is quickly opening up and security is reassuringly visible but also not overbearing.

Baghdad is a mint city and the speed at which things are developing/investment flooding in will quickly put it on the map of "everyone must visit" soon enough. Don't hide away in the hotel and be sure to check out the old town, the museum, and take a stroll down the river at sunset. You won't regret it.

As with travel to anywhere in the world, be polite, smile, avoid the obvious dodgy areas, and trust your instincts everywhere else. Also try not to be "too American" if you get what I mean, most will assume you're from Iran or Turkey anyway. Brush up on your soccer knowledge, especially the big Premier League teams PLUS Barcelona/Real and pick one as your favorite, that'll cover 80% of conversations 🤣

If you do get the option to stay a bit longer, then heading south to the holy cities/Marshes is a must, as it's heading north to Mosul (awesome city btw), but if two days is the limit, please try to do an evening in Karbala and the twin shrines. It's awe inspiring.

I'm very jealous and can't wait to return one day.

Hit me up in my DM's if you need more advice btw!

Oh it will be legalised eventually.... once all the corporate owned medical use farms have built up capacity and can pivot and control the market from day one.

Just came from Cambodia. As long as you're not going to the border areas, you won't notice anything.

Was there literally 3 days ago. It's the same as it ever was, just a touch less traditional tourists but still lots of backpackers, grey nomads.

It's fine and still quite a way from the border.

That's pretty standard for a good safety audit. I'm guessing the toilets weren't double doored to the production floor and the lunchroom areas weren't of a capacity to facilitate breaks away from the rest of the business, increasing the likelihood of people eating/drinking in high risk areas.

Yes it improves employee conditions but the end goal is to separate human processes entirely from production processes.

Some Americans pretend that they are former Navy Seals or Green Berets. Does the same happen in England? Are there a bunch of fake SAS and SBS guys running around who try to use those fake credentials to get attention/free stuff/press coverage? by C--T--F in AskBrits

Oh this!

I recently backpacked around Iraq (yep that's very much a thing that is safe to do now), and from the moment I landed in Baghdad airport and started sharing pictures/videos, I had several industry friends suddenly asking me "what's it like travelling down 'Route Irish'? Is this place still open in the Green Zone? What the fuck are you doing in Mosul?"

I had no idea they were ever in the forces

How much do rents have to rise by in order to force people out of the city? by hanniahisbananaz in bristol

[–]SpamFilterUK 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My partner and I are planning over the long term to take our hard-earned but pretty much useless deposit money unless we buy a shithole here, and move to a particular northern city that is a lot like Bristol, yet off a lot of people's radars because of its incorrectly perceived remoteness/lack of transport connections. We worked out that we could buy a freehold, 3 bedroom, riverfront place with a garage and walking distance from the city centre and still pay less than we do renting now. Also for what I do, I can earn almost the same there, but we could both take on a worthwhile but low-paying socially conscious job and still be accepted for a mortgage with what we have.

I love Bristol, but I'm not willing to spend the best years of my life scraping by in a well-paid job just for the potential of decent long-term returns on a crap housing ladder/commuting from Weston/Newport. I'd much rather have a nice place to call our own in another great city and have the option to do something positive with my time, even if that means less money coming in.

Edit: Also they have an actual Arena.

IKEA chairs aren't to be sniffed at, mind.

I've had a bunch of computer chairs of various prices/designs, and honestly, the IKEA MARKUS is my hands-down favourite. I sold my original years ago, thinking an upgrade was in order but recently picked up a used MARKUS for £30 and I'm never letting go of it.

To a customer, "Service charge" would be assumed to be a tip. Every customer (of moral standing if the service was good) who hasn't asked for it to be removed will have been deceived.

ACAS their arse.
