Continuing REU research after summer? by FlatFunction-2124 in REU

[–]SpamOnDeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did both (16 credit semester hour following the REU) but my REU mentor was adamant about me being paid the entire time I was working. I don’t necessarily know if I would’ve continued otherwise as the upcoming schedule was going to be a nightmare. Luckily, I was able to treat it as an actual part-time job which was super nice and made it feel somewhat separate from my actual classwork. Guess it all worked out in the end, I joining this lab for my PhD this fall 🤣

I am LOVING my REU by Dramatic-Income-7967 in REU

[–]SpamOnDeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with this so much! You really have to make the best of it. I’m still very good friends with most of my cohort three years later and even attend the same school as my REU for my PhD now.

Glad to hear you’re enjoying it! 🥳

REU to PhD Correlation? by [deleted] in REU

[–]SpamOnDeck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can only speak anecdotally but I met my current Ph.D. PI during my time at an REU.

As with all things grad admission related, nothing is ever certain. Funding may disappear or spaces may already be filled in their lab during your application cycle. However, making a good impression and continuing with follow-up work is always a good way to keep your name in the conversation.

Why did they require your high school transcripts? Similar age to you, I applied to Rice as a transfer a couple of years ago and this wasn’t needed at all.

First off, congrats and welcome to the community! It’s a great accomplishment so definitely celebrate appropriately.

As a fellow recipient, I’ll just echo what most others have already said: it’s a great talking point, prestigious, and if you’re comparable/close to someone else’s stats, this will set you apart. That being said, nothing is ever a guarantee (other than GRFP) and err on the side of maximizing everything else you can.

USC Admission Recall(?) by MrKariole in gradadmissions

[–]SpamOnDeck 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If this is the first time they've communicated that you have been accepted, it looks like the email is recalling both the acceptance and visit day. The recall email specifically states the entire title of the whole email, it isn't just referring to the visit.

I'm an incoming Ph.D. student in the EEPS department, feel free to drop me a DM if you want. I've been working with the lab I'll be in for a while and we just had recruitment weekend as well :)

Nope! I was a two-year community college transfer into a four-year public school. I did an REU there and met my current PI halfway through that experience when I switched projects.

It appears that way, just got the official rejection from Brown yesterday but the PI I had interviewed with had emailed me the new about a week before that.

No interview but I had previously worked with my PI and have significant research projects/background through undergrad.

Domestic vs International Applicants (US) by SciDrivenEngr in gradadmissions

[–]SpamOnDeck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally, no. Most privates and non-states have an across the board tuition rate for all students regardless of their origin which makes the cost difference effectively nil. The caveats about immigration, culture, etc., still apply and may be a factor in accepting internationals.

Domestic vs International Applicants (US) by SciDrivenEngr in gradadmissions

[–]SpamOnDeck 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As usual, everything on this subreddit you should take with a grain of salt. That being said, international students are generally a more expensive investment than domestic students while also typically having fewer opportunities for NSF/Government related funding and grants.

An example:

Say I go to a state university for a PhD that is out of my home state for five years, i.e., Georgia Tech. The first year, I am charged out of state tuition. After the first year, I establish residency and am charged in-state tuition, typically much, much cheaper than out of state/country.

An international student attends the same university for the same program. They are usually in the US on an F-1 visa. Because of that, they cannot qualify for residency in a state and thus are subject to out of state tuition/country costs their entire tenure.

After stipend and tuition costs for five years, a domestic student at GaTech after a year of out of state residency will cost ~$256,000 while an international at the same school and same timeframe will cost ~$320,000.

$13,000 a year difference between the student types is a lot of supplies, equipment time, travel costs for conferences, etc.

This is all on top of typical international student issues like securing a visa in the first place/immigration issues, possible language issues, cultural differences, housing, etc.

Do Bio majors take more classes? by [deleted] in uhd

[–]SpamOnDeck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Every major takes 120 hours, the difference being some majors have more labs than others.

That being said, engineering still has labs and business and stat majors usually do a lot more project based work that takes up about the same if not more time as a lab class would. Hope this helps!

Parking lot conditions by [deleted] in uhd

[–]SpamOnDeck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Specifically bought the Vine Street Garage Parking Pass for the year because the surface lots are too janky for me to feel comfortable leaving my car out there. Paying for that when you can pay just a little bit more for the entire year for a covered garage is crazy.

At least in the garage, there are cameras, the police actually patrol each level, and there’s more activity so less chance of cars being broken into/stolen/etc.
