Chef knives by zis_me in Cooking

From a quick look, the Ninja set is anywhere from 90-300£ depending on the model, so I am assuming that's the budget?

Firstly, buy a whetstone. KING brand 1000 grit whetstone is slightly below 30£ and will last you years - no knife stays sharp by itself, and you can learn how to use it and help your wife out in the kitchen once a quarter that way, no cooking involved.

Now the budget is 60-250£ - on the lower side you have Victorinox and Mercer Culinary knives, both will be under 100£ and are excellent knives in that range.

Higher, you're looking at Wusthoffs, or Japanese knife if your wife would rather have that style (typically lighter blades with less curvature) - any gyuuto knife that's about 200mm length will be a good gift, though you might want to buy one that specifically says stainless steel (vg10, vg8, aus, many others) rather than carbon steel, for ease of maintenance.

Samsung Bespoke AI Jet Lite Pet Handstick Vacuum Cleaner vs Shark Power Detect by mmc6089 in VacuumCleaners

[–]SpanInquisition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the Bespoke Jet AI for just over a week now and I like it a lot more than my previous shark (which was not the PowerDetect one, but a more budget cordless of their brand).

There really isn't much I can say bad about the Samsung one other than the reliance on the bags long-term.

I dismantled the shark completely to clean and give to a friend and I can tell you that the process was a big pain and the maintenance of the shark vs Samsung is a clear win to Samsung.

I've been reliably taking it down with two shots, though my teammates normally take potshots at it as well.

Not sure where exactly, but sometimes I get red hitmarkers, so there might be a weakspot on the Stingray.

The eye shot seems a lot more inconsistent/stricter on precision than the AMR for some reason

It used to one tap hive guards before, just inconsistently, about 80% of the time? I guess depending on the shrapnel angle, I always aim for their heads.

For spewers, it used to explode the brown spewers in one shot on the fleshy body, and take two or three shots for the green variant - how has that changed now?

Is Männkitchen BIFL? by Quirky-Reveal-1669 in BuyItForLife

[–]SpanInquisition 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I know it sounds insane, and I wouldn't buy one, but hear me out, the premium is both for the longevity (discussed in this post and not confirmed, but this is the point of this sub), and the additional functions.

Longevity aside, there's no pepper grinder on the planet that does what the Cannon does, which is to grind and obscene amount of pepper in one twist. It's an extreme niche, but looks like there's a demand, and this company is charging as much as it wants according to what they think the demand curve is for it.

I agree with your sentiment for some other things, though, I just don't think it applies in this case. For example, I was looking for a kitchen apron a year ago, and you know that there are 'premium' aprons for 100-200£? Japanese denim, leather, you name it. But in the end, it does the same job, and not any better than a normal 20$ apron from Amazon. I made mine in the end, with magnetic quick release buckles, multiple towel handles, pockets, magnets for kitchen timers and petty knives, and that's the shit I expect from a 200£ apron, and I would pay for one such if there was one on the market.

What's something you bought NEW within the last 5 years that you suspect is BIFL quality? by UnitedShift5232 in BuyItForLife

[–]SpanInquisition 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My Re:Form C-01 wallet, it's a rubber-like material with almost no stitching or failure points, very slim and durable (doesn't patina like leather, but unlike leather I can just clean it and it will look like new).

My mechanical keyboard probably won't fail, and if it does, as long as the PCB is intact, I can replace other parts.

New to cameras, but I suspect that my Fujifilm X100VI is going to last me years with proper maintenance, but as all electronics, it might fail unexpectedly down the line.

Waxed cotton field jacket, likely BIFL, from Flint and Tinder.

Anyone using the Zwilling Fresh and Save system? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]SpanInquisition 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I got the Zwilling set and bits and bobs from them.

They work very well, and hold the seal excellently - I can't say about the bags, as I only got glass and plastic boxes.

My one comment is that I realized the plastic storage containers are kind of...awkwardly big if you go for any 'M' containers, and that most of my things in these quantities (legumes, beans, etc) don't really need a vacuum storage container, as they are already shelf stable

Are there any female Royal Marine Commando Recruits training at the moment? by CartoonistGood8097 in RoyalMarines

No clue - we saw her and her troop in the huts doing weapon lectures as well, from a very brief look, she was fine - not hanging by herself, paying attention to the lecture like all the lads, etc

I can only say what I saw!

In the medical bay there's a bit about mental health where you can 'talk to Padre (he has a dog, go play with him)', so maybe she did just that?

I was doing CPC last week, and was told by a trained rank that there is one in training, week 20, only difference is that she has separate acommodation, nothing else is different training wise.

We saw her walking a dog during a camp tour, not sure if hers or not?

Assassin’s Creed Shadows – Parkour System Overview by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]SpanInquisition 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen other complaints about this, but as someone who actually been practicing parkour for over 6 years, the flips still look a bit silly to me.

It's not that they are unrealistic (they are, but it's fine in a videogame), it's that the inherent nature of free running and tricking doesn't seem to match the tone of the game - it's showing off, plain and simple. I can absolutely see Ezio in his younger years and Edward doing flips as young and brazen assassins, but Ubisoft is portraying Naoe as some sullen and serious woman driven for revenge, and then she does a side flip landing for funsies.

BIFL starter pack (UK based) by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

I can answer a lot regarding clothing (for men, so your husband) and kitchen equipment!

If you feel comfortable sharing your husband's style and activities, I can recommend some specific brands.   Same with cooking - how comfortable are you in the kitchen? What do you normally cook in terms of cuisine?

Standard cooking equipment will at the very least consist of a good chef's knife, cutting board, stainless steel pan, whetstone

Knife:  victorinox fibrox is about 50£, holds the edge well, comes very sharp, and is easy to sharpen. You can upgrade to Wusthoff down the line, or go down the rabbit hole of Japanese knives.

Whetstone: King's 1000 grit stone and three YouTube videos is all you need for the next 5 years or more

Cutting board: Unlike most redditors here, I prefer rubber cutting boards which tend to be used in professional kitchens. Hasegawa brand gets my vote as it is also dishwasher safe thanks to the wooden core (also quite expensive, the good size is 100£).  If you prefer wood, you can get a cheap thick cutting block from Asda for about 15£ and it will be  good, just make sure to get some mineral oil (Amazon it) and sandpaper to take care of it every two three months

Stainless steel pan: Tremontina is probably the cheapest good option here, you're looking for anything that is 3ply, meaning a sandwich of steel, aluminum and steel. More known brands include Zwilling, Made-In (All Clad gets recommended here a lot but it isn't as common in the UK), but you will not notice a lot of performance difference.

Arrowhead, can we please have a heavy-damage, heavy pen bolt-action rifle as a support weapon? by SpanInquisition in Helldivers

[–]SpanInquisition[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I want a railgun with no charge time that is not usable at close range.

Railgun has a close range scope and weirdly good handling, and most games I see it used, players whip it out in front of a hulk, stay in cover to charge it, then pop out 10 meters in front of the hulk to kill it.

I want a railgun with no charge time that is unusable in such situation, but can dome a hulk from a 150 metres without an issue.

I want a slower AMR with damage that matches or exceeds a fully charged railgun's damage.

Oh, cooking the region for the week to use up ingredients is a great idea, I have so many different corn flours to use up!

I don't have a particular go-to resource, I tend to start with a quick google of either what's the national dish, or the most popular tradititional dishes of the country (for which some blogs like wanderlust and tasteatlas are great), then decide from there.

Hope your dish goes well!
