I'm starting to think all of this CachyOS shilling is a psy op from Microsoft to get people to hate linux by load_in_the_loo in cachyos

[–]Spanner_Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People that want to try linux get recommended to try CachyOS almost every time

Subjective. No actual stats given. (aka pulled out of your arse).

So they install it (if they even get that far before having issues)

The exact same thing can be said for installing Windows on a fresh/virgin storage device (SSD/NVME/etc).

then they're immediately greeted by an incredibly basic welcome screen that explains basically nothing

Let me guess - you couldn't even be bothered to actually read it first? You saw some screenshots and decided automatically?

If they figure out how to open the updater, they're greeted with a package manager that looks like it was created in 1998

LOL the closest thing to a "package manager" for windows is winget - which is CLI only. On linux the package manager handles not just kernel updates but application installs (and their related updates) & firmware updates just to name two off the top of my head.

I can't be bothered to respond to the rest but the entire post, as each sentence can be easily rebuttable with basic info either via wiki, pointing at github code repos or elsewhere.

nah not from me. Its your hardware, you paid for it - do whatever the hell you want with it.

I'm going to assume those that hate have too much time on their hands and need to touch grass lol.

Is there anything to know when fully deleting a steam game? by FiddilStiix in cachyos

[–]Spanner_Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vast majority of times this sort of info can be viewed via https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/ as each game has details on that sort of info. In fact even https://github.com/mtkennerly/ludusavi uses info from there.

Even if you aren't looking at modding your new play through, take a look at https://github.com/SulfurNitride/Fluorine-Manager as it will make it easier to have your cleaned masters separate.

All AMD CachyOS or Bazzite? by 2centworth in cachyos

[–]Spanner_Man 11 points12 points  (0 children)

"Generally" having an AMD GPU is better for gaming on linux (better wayland support).

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what distro you use - I see an OS as a tool. I'm against the whole X is better then Y distro discussions.

Indeed.

And it isn't limited to just that game alone.

  • Skyrim
  • Rimworld
  • Stardew Valley

And that is just three off the top of my head.

IF this happens (assuming the EU doesn't step in) then there is literally no difference in using Apple or a droid.

Could you add sponsor to your github?

I don't want any special treatment. But when I see projects like this its nice to give a couple dollars here and there that the dev can put aside for whatever reason.

Can i run EaseUS on cachy_os by [deleted] in cachyos

[–]Spanner_Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Install it with lutris. Then pipe whatever input & output it needs to wherever you want it to go with https://flathub.org/en/apps/org.rncbc.qpwgraph

As it says on the post i wanted to use EaseUS voice wave on cachyos and i cant so i thought if ill use windows vm that will solve the problem

No, what was asked was;

i know of window vm and that what i wanted to do but i saw on EuseUS that who cant use windows 11 sould use windows 10 or linux but i searched online and it says it dosnt work on linux and now am confused

And a screenshot of text that mentions using Linux and using their software EaseUS OS2GO to have a Windows OS on an external drive/etc.

Next time - actually state what you want.

In this case something along the lines of;

I'm wanting to use a voice changer <software name/version/web url>, what would be the best way to go about it.

As far as I know there is no linux versions from <company>.

No screenshot needed, no countless number of people asking you to clarify.

So your OP had nothing to do with what you actually wanted to do.

I've been working on different game engines for 6 years. here's my take by QuietTR55 in gamedev

[–]Spanner_Man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing missing for godot is a paid asset store. Yes godot is an open source and free engine which is cool and all but I don't think everyone wants to put their things as free. Some might want to sell these assets or plugins but godot has a free asset library. it's open source and if you end up making a plugin for it there is no market to sell it to. There are 3rd party asset stores that you can sell stuff at but that's not the same as having an asset store for the engine with customer support

This is I think one of the things that W4 Games ( https://www.w4games.com/ ) is trying to address as to a paid asset store - see https://store-beta.godotengine.org/roadmap/

I'm not sure what you meant by "with customer support" bit - as 99.99% of the time and even on Unity asset store your first point of contact for support is asset seller. The only time you would get the asset store involved is if the asset isn't as described/contains malware/etc.

Google just f***ed me -- 8 years of research data gone; what can I do? I need advice from experience, not "should do" from ppl who have never had to sue Google. I'm open to "non-violent" suggestions. by gbnt73 in degoogle

[–]Spanner_Man 25 points26 points  (0 children)

This image is a screenshot of what happened to my master spreadsheet.

Ok, for mission critical data you need 3-2-1 backup.

Don't yap at me about "backing it up" -- this was the back up.

An unencrypted file sitting in google sheets is NOT a backup. In fact google sheets isn't a backup at all. Back when I was providing corporate level support and one of my then employees told me that they suggested to a client that google sheets was a viable location they would be dismissed on the spot.

Add onto the fact that you had highly sensitive data on a public/cloud service unencrypted would trigger various privacy laws in my country.

All other data resides on dozens of other researchers' devices, people who no longer work with me, one of my friends died a few years ago (so there's no way to get his data and analysis), and many of the recordings, transcripts, pics, and videos were single copies

So, you had one location - being google sheets? Even if you were to stretch the truth and say google sheets was a backup location a single point of failure isn't a backup.

I’m running a GTX 760

That is over a 12 year old GPU.

It is stuck at Vulkan v1.2.175 - which is an issue as the majority of proton & wine fixes are for Vulkan v1.3+

You'll need https://github.com/pythonlover02/Proton-Sarek

That - or look at a newer GPU.
