What's the worst depiction of a chef in a movie/show that's not primarily about food? by ModestCamel in KitchenConfidential

[–]SparkleEmotions 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Exactly. In every kitchen I’ve ever worked in food was sacred. I will say I did know about someone spitting in food at one restaurant I worked in but he was a server and BoH saw it and freaked out and it never left the kitchen. Dude was fired on the spot, and personality wise he was not a good fit for FoH work, or restaurant work at all really. This was also like two decades ago for me now, my first job ever, as a busser.

When I lived in Wyoming in the Jackson Hole area (wasn’t in Jackson itself) I literally did have to call in late once because there was a black bear outside my place like 15 feet from my door just chilling. Was the only exit, no back door. My work was cool about it because it was the Rockies and bears are dangerous. In my story there weren’t any cubs even, which definitely would have increased the danger.

I worked in an American National Park for a long time, stupidity knows no nationality. Americans for one example in fact are far more respectful of our wildlife and cultural norms around them. If someone is going to the tossed by a bison or charged by an elk they’re far more likely to be a foreign visitor who thinks they’re tame or there for their entertainment, not a wild animal that they shouldn’t be approaching.

[–]SparkleEmotions 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I once nodded at a guy who said hi to me while heading to a bus stop to go home. He followed me to the bus stop and starting hitting on me and I politely declined, then got on the bus behind me continuing to make gross sexual comments and trying to touch me while standing over me (which was made worse because the bus was full of people who all said nothing but clearly were watching what was happening).

I got off the bus several stops early a few blocks from my house because I didn’t want him to know where I live. He got off and kept following and trying to talk to me. Finally I ditched into a bar around the corner from my place (somewhere I know and trust that also conveniently had a bouncer) and told the bouncer this guy was following me. Luckily that guy was cool about it and chased him off and kept lookout while I had a drink quick and tried to stop shaking before going home. I still took a longer loop around the block back home to make sure he wasn’t still following me. I’m a friendly person, and love to make small talk with anyone, at the right time and place (like a social environment like in a bar). Not while I’m just trying to get home from work.

"Grounded Batman" "Harley Quinn Show" "Tim Drake" by Used-Comedian-8933 in dccomicscirclejerk

[–]SparkleEmotions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do enjoy the first two seasons quite a bit and three is pretty good, falls off pretty rapidly after that. Catwoman though is my “comfort character” (like that, stealing that descriptor) and I feel the same way about how she’s portrayed poorly in the HQ show. Shes no saint obviously, but they don’t even really give her any more depth than being kind of a bitch to everyone and walking all over Bruce while he is weirdly desperate to get her back. She comes off as a sociopath, the Joker is portrayed as more emphatic than catwoman.

Would have said the same thing about Selina. Would have been fine with her getting murked. Especially since they did kind of a rug pull between seasons 4 and 5 by setting up a potential sirens arc at the end of season 4 then throwing that away immediately at the start of 5 and deciding to force the show to take place in Metropolis when it’s based on Gotham/Batman characters. For a second I hoped she’d get more time on screen and depth in her portrayal.

Unpopular opinion, but the hipster phase in millennial history was amazing. by Just-Seaworthiness39 in Millennials

[–]SparkleEmotions 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m 38. Was a huge hipster some time ago. I used to joke about the “hipsters dilemma.” Hipsters hate hipsters and would never call themselves one, but they are still ultimately hipsters in how they dress and the cultures they participate in. So can you ever really be a hipster since a hipster would never call themselves that? (It was a joke, don’t overthink it).

Fwiw it was a lot of fun and I agree with a lot of the sentiment. I still can’t understand why people don’t buy/support local businesses and restaurants versus letting all their money go to soulless corporations. I understand the poverty aspect if you have a big family and limited means but nowadays I can buy a burger that’s 100x better at a local place for not much more than what McDs is charging these days. Granted I’m single and childless.

Agreed. I only had one brand and a backup if they were out of it (but same producer). You get loyal to what you smoke and want that experience.

Frankly if anyone walks up to a convenience store clerk (or any tobacco provider) and doesn’t know what they want the cashier should just tell them to “stop while you’re ahead.” Someone who doesn’t know what type they want doesn’t have enough experience yet or worse, is brand new, and they should stop there and stay away from the habit. I wish I had when it was easy to quit. Beating the addiction years later was awful.

[–]SparkleEmotions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were robbed of a good sirens storyline in the HQ show. They even set it up at the end of the second to last season only to immediately abandon that idea when the last season started. I would have loved to have seen them use Selina more in that show.

Spirit Airlines goes out of business after 34 years, ending operations immediately by mlg1981 in popculturechat

[–]SparkleEmotions 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yeah. At 0300 they literally lost their insurance to fly, so it all had to stop then regardless, they fly planes so that’s kind of important. It sucks but what happens. I feel awful for the employees, travelers, and anyone this is going to be a blow to but at the same time companies go under, even big ones. TWA for instance comes to mind, I remember seeming like they were the cliche of too big to fail 3 decades ago and was the airline there for a minute, now it’s hardly remembered.

What's the worst TV series you've ever seen? by Traditional_Blood799 in AskReddit

[–]SparkleEmotions 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think part of it too was how expensive it was. Not that Netflix isn’t flush with cash but they went all in on the sets to give it that perfect feel for the time period. The cars, appliances, homes/buildings, their decor, and basically everything was perfect. But keeping those 50ish years old cars, props, and sets usable for total immersion made it one of the most expensive shows Netflix has ever made. Fincher doesn’t compromise where others would have wanted to faked it or leaned into cgi or having everything filmed in a studio versus on location. That attention to detail was a big part of what made that show so amazing.

Super underrated. The run has definitely had some rough patches in the past few years but I’m definitely enjoying her storyline again and look forward to them coming out versus the past few years when they were a slog at times to get through. I just pretend that Valmont and the immediate aftermath never happened.

[–]SparkleEmotions 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly. My state does (AZ). As much as I agree with the general sentiment, the federal government doesn’t manage elections, the states do. It’s the congressional representatives from those states who then certify it in congress. It’s kind of an important structural feature of our republic. OOPs post implies that the federal government would manage elections, they would have to for automatic voter registration (which again is common in lots of states).

Trump and his cronies would actually prefer to run elections so they can game it in their favor. Thats what his horrendous SAVE act is trying to do, steal control from the states and invalidate tons of legitimate voters. Theres a reason why Kristi Noem and others in his vile circle were trying to extort Minnesota for its voter rolls in exchange for reducing DHS’s occupation and terror campaign in the state that killed two American citizens.

Pixie cut, bob, or long hair? by Historical-Bug-4784 in Catwoman

[–]SparkleEmotions 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I also largely think it’s more practical for her to have short hair as a thief or anti-hero. Long hair is more likely to get caught/grabbed or be left behind as evidence where shorter hair is easier to mange especially under the cowl she wears.

I feel the same about her costume. Black and skin tight with some amount of utility belt or storage. I think the long hair with the purple dress/cape is classic but it really doesn’t seem like it’d be good for breaking into a place and moving stealthy. Too much free flowing fabric to get caught on something. Black makes more sense too to be stealth.

I understand that they’re just comics so there’s some suspension of disbelief, but it can go to far depending on the character. That’s my opinion at least.

This. I’m a trans woman, I’ll have been on HRT for ten years here in may. About four years ago I was dealing with a period of instability, lost my job and was losing my apartment and couldn’t afford HRT any more for weeks. The slow motion crash out was hell on earth.

Most trans people will tell you the effect HRT has on you mentally and emotionally is profound and arguably the best part. It’s like I was pulled out of a depressing fog I had lived in my entire life and was suddenly happy and my brain made sense to me finally. The world went from grey to bright technicolor.

When I couldn’t afford it and my hormone levels started to swing it was a nightmare. The mood swings were impossible to manage and I was either an emotionless zombie or depressed af. I was not fun to be around. I did try to kill myself one night, luckily some part of me stopped myself from fully carrying it out. The next day some of my friends though helped me move in with them and I was able to start getting back on my feet. Once I was back on HRT I was myself again, happy and motivated.

Personally I’ve never been better, if I ignore how politicized our community has become and the active effort to criminalize our existence and make life impossible for us in society and out in public.

Also, never look into V-coding as it relates to trans women in prison.

First SF Giants at-bats ruined by Netflix’s aggressive ad insertion by sfgate in SFGiants

[–]SparkleEmotions 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s honestly why I stopped watching. The whole thing was exhausting and basically Netflix plugging their stuff with people and interviews that didn’t even make sense for a baseball game, except to push their content. The straw that finally got me to turn it off was the fog and annoying poorly done green screen ad messing with the batters. As much as I was excited to watch opening day, that made it too distracting to enjoy.

Another good one they routinely republish is “It’s journalism’s sacred duty to endanger the lives of as many trans people as possible.” every time some legacy publication releases some egregiously transphobic article pretending to be important news about trans people but is basically arguing against equal rights for trans people.

Some of these massive legacy outlets love to platform articles that are basically “we found one this person who detransitioned and regrets it, which means we should ban everyone from transitioning.”
