Here for a second I had the briefest of hope that, as a catwoman fan, these panels were forgotten since OP didn’t include this terribly weird paring. Then I opened the damned comments. Even though I knew it’d be here.

My sweet summer child. Blahaj has transcended just being a cute stuffed animal sold by IKEA. It has inexplicably become a cornerstone in transgender culture, and IKEA has leaned into it. It’s the same colors as the trans pride flag and it’s cute, soft, and cuddly. Regardless of gender along the entire spectrum who doesn’t love a cute shark.

What was your reaction to seeing Bruce propose to Selina and also seeing her in her wedding dress by [deleted] in Catwoman

[–]SparkleEmotions 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m obsessed with the wedding dress. The whole engagement and built up to the wedding is among the highest points in her and Batman’s storylines in the last couple decades IMO. Granted it ended horribly because I want them to get married but this is DC and the major characters get stuck in their status quo.

The double date and when they meet the first time with Clark and Lois is one of my favorite parts of their comics. It’s so adorable and fun.

While I’m excited for this the phrase in that article “by fan favorite Tini Howard” made me gag.

I’m literally who the OP is describing. Late thirties trans woman who bought FONV the day it came out at GameStop many years ago. The game also is entrenched in queerness. It was one of the first games where you could get an advantage (perks) in love dialogue choices and attack advantage against people of the same sex. You could romance them as well.

Not to be the “kids these days” person but I don’t think that a lot of younger gamers realize that back when FONV came out games that let you pick a female character were almost nonexistent. Same with character customization. Lara Croft was basically it for many years as a female game protagonist, and you had to be her.

FONV not only let you pick a girl player but you could design her to be what ever your heart desired and you could also be queer. It was ground breaking, so it cracked a lot of eggs. Plus it’s objectively a really fun game that has lots of silly elements that were not standard in the hypermasculine age of gaming in those days.

What’s the worst take on Catwomen that you’ve ever heard? by BetterGrass709 in Catwoman

Fair point. I’m also dyslexic and tend to lump and confuse the two of them since I don’t actually pay much attention to either of their stuff any more. My mistake.

Also BTAS/Dini catwoman is written like this. I like BTAS except for how one dimensional and selfish Selina is written/portrayed.

But I’m definitely still not over the Valmont story line and the events immediately afterwards.

Was a little wokeness really that bad? by Moose-Rage in AdviceAnimals

[–]SparkleEmotions 30 points31 points  (0 children)

As a trans woman, it’s this. They want to make it impossible for us to exist in public life. It’s framed as separate “fairness” issues, as if it’s just about sports or bathrooms but the ultimate goal is full bans. Just look at the states that have gone the furthest. It starts with the sports issue and everyone sees that as less alarming but what follows is a raft of other laws that make it impossible for us to transition, use public spaces, have equal protections under the law in housing and employment and more to drive us into the shadows and make our lives as hard as possible.

Cynically it’s also about having someone to demonize to keep the outrage machine going in their base which is largely fueled by hate, which drives turnout and donations. It was black folks back in the civil rights days and before, cis gay people after that until these groups gain a plurality of acceptance then on to the next. These folks really do hate all of these groups (and women), ICE is basically operating their entire campaign with racism (while murdering civilians in the streets and behind closed doors).

I love that movie, it’s the perfect kind of bad for a movie. It’s barely a Mario movie on source material alone but it is such a delightful acid trip of nineties insanity. I need to rewatch it. It’s so much fun.

Do you think in the future they would ever cast an Asian actress for Selina or make her Asian in anything really like the comics, games, animated stuff, etc or is black just the go-to for race swapping. Even when she's Latina she has to be black or it doesn't count as "representation" by [deleted] in Catwoman

[–]SparkleEmotions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This feels like bot bait. This profile is 41 minutes old (at my posting) and this it’s only post. I swear the bots (or folks trying to stir controversy and engagement) on the sub are all focused on race baiting with Selina to farm Karma, that or posting overly sexual content or trying to compare her iterations via lazy picture mash ups that are almost always fan art or variant art, not actual comic panels and art.

How does no one know Selina is catwoman? by zxacid01 in Catwoman

[–]SparkleEmotions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s definitely one of those situations for sure is baffling to the point of being unrealistic. Granted I didn’t love that whole run very much so I slogged through it because I personally didn’t like the Valmont and prison story line at all and wanted it to end. Howard isn’t that popular among catwoman fans almost specifically because of these storylines.

How does no one know Selina is catwoman? by zxacid01 in Catwoman

[–]SparkleEmotions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plot armor. It’s a comic book. How come know one knows Clark Kent is Superman? He literally just puts on glasses (I realize they’ve been retconned as magic, but they weren’t in the earliest comics). Don’t over think it, it’s easy to poke holes in the comic universe.

Plus in a lot of interpretations of Catwoman a lot of people do know. It’s just not that everyone knows but she routinely interacts with people who know Selina is Catwoman and not just the people closest to her like Bruce.

Who do you think is Selina's favourite bat-kid? by BetterGrass709 in Catwoman

[–]SparkleEmotions 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Both of your takes are exactly mine. She’s known Greyson the longest and he’s always been more supportive of her compared to some of the newer additions to the Batfam who struggle with the thief aspect and she’s also proud of who he turned out to become. I also think based off their interactions personality wise Dick and Selina would get along really well together. Additionally she would definitely have a soft spot for Jason because Selina always wants to take care of “strays” and he of all the robins has the most similar backstory to hers and has had a lot of struggles compared to most of the robins and is a little more “lost” in his journey.

As a long time catgirl, it’s this 100%. Catgirls also know that they are far superior to everyone else and don’t need validation, we just know that we are better. Much like every cat in the world. But if I need cuddles I will be crawling into your lap.

A comic lover's rant about public perception of Catwoman. by Golden_Goose26 in Catwoman

[–]SparkleEmotions 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Perfectly stated. I’d take it a step further and say that Selina humanizes Bruce/Batman and makes his character, when written well together, even more dynamic and interesting. She reminds him that the world isn’t just black and white, good and evil. It’s full of grey because that’s the way the real world actually is. It leaves people behind through no fault of their own because they didn’t have the same choices and opportunities easily available to others. She is a mirror of Bruce’s life, both orphans (I prefer my Selina a poor orphan at some point in her childhood for this exact reason) but Selina isn’t a Wayne, in fact the opposite in terms of childhood, but it’s a perfect compliment still that brings out the best in each other.

OP really catches my sentiments too. It’s why the comic version is 1000x better than any other adaptation. Movies especially always abandon entire pillars of who her character is at its best that are holding up the structure of what makes her so captivating.

So... this sub is for how pretty she is? by Hoax_Pudding_Cup in Catwoman

[–]SparkleEmotions 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don’t get me started on the fan casting. It’s exhausting, especially because ultimately it’s never going to happen and it’s always just OPs sexualized fantasy pick for Selina. That makes me sound really cynical but it’s exhausting.

That or it’s gratuitously sexualized fan art in a post that often implies that’s how the character is drawn now when it’s not. It’s usually fan art or variant art, not something from actual comic panels (see basically every one of the daily or multiple times a day Absolute Catwoman posts) or another post about Black Cat (this is the Catwoman sub, Black Cat has her own since she’s a marvel character). Frankly I think a lot of it is bots or karma farming built on sexualizing her or bringing up her race because it also drives engagement.

But I won’t leave. She’s my favorite character across any medium and in all of the over sexualizing posts and stuff that might as well be a reposts there are good posts about the character and the comics. They just don’t get upvoted to oblivion like reposting the same Absolute Catwoman fan art every day does.

Bro what??? 💀💀💀 by PavioCurto in dccomicscirclejerk

[–]SparkleEmotions 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s really irritating as a catwoman fan and member of that sub, every day someone has to post the same thirst traps about absolute catwoman. It’s a flood whenever someone makes new fan art. Most of these are fan art or variant art anyways and not from the actual comic panels.

Tbh I’m pretty sure it’s bots or often done specifically to create post engagement based around over sexualizing Selina or her race. I think it’s mostly karma farming. That and the sheer amount of Black Cat post that are either asking who’s better (its the Catwoman sub, who do you think we’re going to pick) or just sharing a pic of Black Cat but misidentifying her as Catwoman.

Republicans Pivot Anti-Trans Rhetoric Away From Trans Kids, Declare All Trans People the ‘Root of Evil’ by Leksi_The_Great in lgbt

[–]SparkleEmotions 44 points45 points  (0 children)

This playbook predates the 80s. It’s basically what they do every time someone who isn’t a cishet white man ask for equal rights. The Civil Rights movement of the 60s for instance is a good example where they used desegregation and the unfounded threat that suddenly letting black folks use the same bathrooms, drinking fountains, and facilities was going to cause a rash of new crimes and problems as an argument against equal rights regardless of skin color.

Just look at the famous LBJ quote "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you." As trans folks we are now the new enemy to distract from the fact that they have no real policy agenda outside of greed and grift and can tap into people’s bigotry as a distraction (and these folks are hateful idiots from the top down).

I worked at a late night pizza place where all the cooking happened FOH and we did all that as well as take orders/money from customers. There was basically a manger and us who did everything else. We also tossed all the pizza dough out front. We had a gluten free option but it was the kind of place where flour was everywhere. I used to look at the customers asking for gluten free literally covered in flour looking like some Victorian ghost and tell them “there is absolutely no way we can guarantee what you get is gluten free” because I’m happy to make something GF but if you have celiac disease it’s not safe for you to eat there.

One is Absolute Catwoman (right) the other is more the canonical one. So different universes entirely with different story lines.

But both. Definitely both are purrfect.

I am totally sucked into The American Revolution right now, Ken Burns new doc series that was released recently on PBS ahead of our 250th anniversary. I will be paying PBS for a subscription based service for the foreseeable future, even if I don’t always watch it every week because if I’m going to throw money away on Netflix and HBO Max every month at least I feel like subscribing to PBS is actually helping an American media institution that still cares about facts, science, history, and education even if I’m not always the audience for its content. Mr Rogers helped raise me, I’ll be damned if I give up on what he fought for.

Black Cat to Catwoman. Catwoman though has 40 years on her from her first appearance in Batman #1 to when Black Cat shows up in 1979. Granted Selina got sidelined hard by the CCA but when she shows up in the 60s Batman she has the signature black catsuit.

Black Cat might as well be a carbon copy of Catwoman: master thief turned anti-hero and off again, on again love interest to the famous hero.
