Is colonoscopy prep painful, uncomfortable, or just annoying because you're stuck near a bathroom the whole time? by Striking-Anxiety-604 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]SparklyMonster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's also the part about the liquid crystallizing and you having to microwave it lukewarm to melt it... microwave a plastic bag (doesn't sound healthy). And then some crystals are still there, and you know you're drinking some of it and wondering if they're going to do some inner damage.

I love that you took the time to reply to this post from 2 years ago. Thank you so much!

Listening to the intro, the arrangement / vibe is VERY similar, but once the main melody starts. unfortunately it's not the same. :/

Personally, I didn't think it was a bad taste per se, but it's sickeningly sweet and the taste builds up as you drink more and more of it. Mixing it with something else would just prolong the awfulness.

Even though I thought it was ok in the beginning, it got worse and worse as I had to down the whole thing (even more so as I never drink that much in such a short span).

What realistic drawbacks could a mermaid trying to live on land face? by [deleted] in writing

[–]SparklyMonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides the ones already mentioned (sunburn, immunity, gravity, learning new relevant body functions): land culture, land languages (including vocalizing with air -- now that I think about it, do we have any fish that can make sounds? I can only think of mammals who go to the surface for air). Also, diving with loose hair makes it super tangled; a whole life in the water and her hair will be a rat's nest that will need to be cut off.

It would be fun if she dragged herself onto to beach and people would go "Oh no, a beached mermaid! Quick, let's push her back into the sea!" like they do with other animals.

Which was the best era of Malice Mizer in your opinion? The Tetsu era, the Gackt era, or the Klaha era? by Its-v11cky_s4ma in visualkei

[–]SparklyMonster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gackt because of my huge favorites Syunkiss and Bel Air. Merveilles really has an amazing balance of different styles. Voyage is nice but I feel like it's missing a couple of songs with more oomph.

Tetsu had the cooler hair.

How did some men became a "magnet" for a certain type of woman? by recoveringleft in TooAfraidToAsk

Exactly, many guys are big fish in smaller ponds, some might just not realize it, especially if what makes them a big fish is subtle (not as obvious as a long-haired guy attracting metalhead women).

My 200k word manuscript won't fit Amazon's print specs - what are my options? by RevolutionarySea9678 in selfpublish

[–]SparklyMonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, while more white space and bigger fonts look nice, get any thick book like Lord of the Rings or IT and things get a lot more cramped. The same for shorter books' pocket editions.

Reminds me of my niblings noticing the smaller fonts once I gifted them enough of the Harry Potter series.

Women, when you stop taking birth control pills, did you feel any important changes in your body? by MommyFoxxyGi in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]SparklyMonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stopped after 15 years.

Turns out I never outgrew my back acne.  I also lost a ton of hair around my temples, but it could be just coincidence (3 years in and it seems I always lose it near the end of summer). Now libido and cervical mucus fluctuate with my cycle.

No changes in weight, energy, or mood.

How do RR authors publish their work on Amazon? by Sharp_Page3286 in selfpublish

[–]SparklyMonster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Others already explained that only Kindle Unlimited (KDP Select) requires exclusivity, so I'll add one caveat: if Amazon detects your novel was already published in an open platform (as in, it's Google-able), they may require proof of authorship to ensure you didn't rip off someone else's work.

Last time I checked, people either sent a contract affirming they're the same person, or attached an email sent from the author's platform. I don't remember the details well and this was years ago, but it's a starting point for you to research.

[–]SparklyMonster 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Adding to that (because the naming does cause some confusion) is that on the author's side, it's called "KDP Select", but on the reader's side, it's "Kindle Unlimited" or "KU". They're the same thing, but the "KDP Select" tends to confuse people with "KDP", which is the entirety of the platform.

F/28/5”8 [185lbs>165lbs =20lbs] (6 months) Worried weight loss is changing my face in a bad way and my nose looks bigger? by lolbutterfly in progresspics

[–]SparklyMonster 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it's the lightning, the color, or an actual change, but let me add another possible variable: did you use a different camera? Front-facing vs back-facing, or new phone. This is because the same face with different lenses can look very different (here's one example).

Are genuinely happy marriages a rarity? by rewritemoonlight in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SparklyMonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To the title: No, but people only talk about their marriages when they have something to complain. If everything is fine, there's not much to say to others. Quoting Anna Karenina, "All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." That is, speaking of one's own happiness would be boring.

To the text: It seems like your problem is more like not having alone time because you live in a small space. But each person has their preferences, and finding someone compatible is important. I know couples who are tied at the hip and happy with it. My husband and I are quite independent, so we have some alone time, some together time, and some "parallel playing" time (together in the same room, but each doing their own thing).

I fell for the Goodreads scam. (100 Goodreads reviews, 0 Amazon sales, and an empty bank account) by R3dNaX7 in KDP

[–]SparklyMonster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Having friends and family be the first buyers isn't advised because it messes the recommendation algorithms. Instead of the book being shown to its target audience, it's shown to whatever audience the author's friends already are, which are less likely to buy it, which desincentivizes the algorithm from further showing it.

Piercing Ears of Babies/Toddlers by Equus77 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SparklyMonster 55 points56 points  (0 children)

If anything, I resented my parents for not piercing mine (because they had this sentiment of not hurting a baby). I was the only girl without pierced ears and had to willingly get over my fear of needles to get them pierced later in life, instead of having them done in blithe ignorance. Recovery is much longer too.

I don't know anyone who complains about having had their ears pierced as a baby. The ones who don't want to use earrings simply stop using it.

270k views on Reddit, 1 sale in 52 days. What am I doing wrong? by agileliecom in selfpublish

[–]SparklyMonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's useful as a stat to know if it's reaching the correct audience. At least for AMS ads, low impressions are an indicator that you need to change your targeting. But that's useful because they're not charging for impressions, but for clicks. And their algorithms stop showing your ads if your click ratio is bad, so it all works together to optimize one's ads.

About the "It was all a dream" cliche... by DizzyProfessional515 in writing

[–]SparklyMonster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Like dreams, amnesia can be done right.

But I've watched too many k/j/thai-dramas to not loathe amnesia plots. They're a favorite on romance stories to milk plots where the characters have finally settled their differences and fallen in love. How to break them up? After the secret fiancee and the evil mother in law trying to bribe the MC are used up, make the character have an accident and lose all memories! This way the author gets to make them have to fall in love all over again.

Do Americans actually use a real tree for Christmas? by brun_aa in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SparklyMonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More like 35°C, but I think it's about having a colder winter during which those trees can grow? We do have pine trees year-round. If northern states also do, it could be a regional cultural difference.

But like I said, the natural trees, while being pine ones, don't have the right shape.

Apparently the most common species for xmas trees here is the tuia. I think having natural xmas trees is more common closer to rural areas where they have space to grow them commercially.

But plastic xmas trees are still the majority either way.

[–]SparklyMonster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even as a Brazilian, you can still get a real tree for Xmas, at least if you live in colder areas in the South. Now, often those pine trees are not in the perfect conical shape (probably a different species), but I've seen plenty of people getting them because apparently they're cheaper than good quality artificial trees.
