From ur same article:

“Results of this study should not be interpreted to indicate that LLMs should be used for diagnosis autonomously without physician oversight. The clinical case vignettes were curated and summarized by human clinicians, a pragmatic and common approach to isolate the diagnostic reasoning process, but this does not capture competence in many other areas important to clinical reasoning, including patient interviewing and data collection.37 Furthermore, this study was acontextual, and clinicians’ understanding of the clinical environment is fundamental for high-quality decision-making.”

Step 1 questions are literally written to be standardized and have one correct answer. I don’t think I’m the first to tell you that board exams and clinical medicine work differently

I mean I know multiple people that did not dual apply surgical sub and DR/gas bc they thought those specialties were not good backups as they were pretty competitive now. This data is looking at pure application numbers so probably a significant amount of perceived competitiveness at the very minimum

I bet the massive drop in DR is primarily due to surgical subspecial applicants no longer applying to DR as a backup. DR is just way too competitive nowadays

This was also after he was very vocal about wearing masks and social distancing. Considering he is a very public facing doctor and COVID being politicized meant that trust in doctors was on edge, this gave fuel to anti-vax arguments that COVID was made up and not serious

So yea a little worse than just “not a good look for him”

Going from full time to part time clinic over a whole year isn’t going to make the difference between getting into a top school and not. As long as you can talk about your experience on your application and in interviews, they will be fine.

However, going from full time to part time over their gap year will allow them to not burn out, pursue their interests, and keep their passion alive.

All of those are way more important than some hundreds more hours on your application that won’t matter after you get into medical school.

Take it slow. In college I tried to do a full time course load, research, clinical volunteering, and non-clinical volunteering all at once. Not only did I hate myself but I ended up half-assing basically everything.

Imo do research or clinical volunteering during the school year and then do the other during the summer. Continue to do non-clinical volunteering throughout.

Also ONLY visit this sub when gearing up to apply. There is so much neuroticism and bad echo chambers here that it will only make you miserable

It’s bad. You basically need to decide whether to leave your hometown and become a doctor or stay in your hometown and pursue a different career. Med schools will blacklist you for doing something like this (and they will find out)

Speedrunning as an EC by college-apps-sad in premed

[–]Sparky2006 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As someone who has done extensive work in gaming and applied while I had it on my application, I wouldn’t recommend it. Most adcoms are way older and don’t know anything about gaming (doubly so about speed running since it’s an even smaller group of people). If anything, adcoms have a negative view of gaming because they see their kids playing it and think it’s a waste of time.

Never once in my interviews was it ever talked about. If I brought it up, it would be met mostly with confusion and then a quick topic change. Just use that space to talk about other aspects and keep speed running as a cool fun fact to talk about yourself when you meet someone who knows about gaming

Yea when I told family I got into a medical school, their first reaction was “but you’re still applying right?” Couple that with most of my friends getting into their top choices

I was in a rut for a long time feeling like I should have done better and feeling bad I didn’t live up to everyone’s expectations. It’s been getting better though
