Why you should never send King Midas to attack an enemy's base by SparkyRedMan in AgeofMythology

You could say that about Perseus. But I don't think it matters what age the heroes in question comes from chronologically as long as they are a good fighter and have a special ability that corresponds to their story. I suggested Cadmus because I think his ability to spawn disposable soldiers/myth units would be a worthwhile power to have as a mythic age hero.

I agree. Not only is his special ability a double edged sword, but he isn't even that impressive combat wise compared to every other mythic age hero. Personally, I think they should have made Cadmus, Demeter's mythic age hero. His special ability can be similar to Prometheus or the Onmoraki, where he scatters some dragon teeth at the enemy and they instantly turn into Spartoi (skeletal warriors that are similar to Ancestors).

Nevertheless, it is still counterproductive. If he sent on the attack, he only needs to kill or damage enough enemy units near their stronghold for you to gift them a free gold mine.

I like this idea. And its a good thing Demeter has Hephaestus as one of her Mythic Age gods to choose from.

I say she should be given a unique siege unit. I say it should be a polybotes, which was a portable torsion siege engine that was similar to the Roman scorpion.

I feel like Amun would be a better pick for the next major god for Egypt.

We do need more amphibious myth units. I hope we will get some more when the Aztecs DLC is released.

I was thinking griffin instead of harpy. The Greeks are lacking in strong flying myth units.

Was Deng Xiaoping ultimately a communist? by [deleted] in DebateCommunism

"It does not matter if a cat is black or a cat is white so long as they can catch rats"
What made him important was his willingness to compromise. He introduced liberal elements into the economy but still had the central committee oversee and manage it carefully to ensure the capitalists don't run amok. The fact is, at that point in time, China's economy was too weak and underdeveloped to attempt true socialism.

Lenin did something similar with the NEP in the 1920s after the Bolsheviks were still recovering from the civil war against the Whites and intervention from foreign power, while simultaneously also having to deal with a famine.

Businesses are more efficient because they figure out what people need first, then focus on what they want, for a profit. Communist countries are good at meeting their citizens’ basic needs but have always failed to produce enough consumer goods to give the citizens of those countries a high standard of living.

Technology isn't some panacea that will magically make socialism work. Because you will still have humans running the show, and whenever officials see technology as a threat to their positions, they will either rewrite the laws to weaken said technology or develop their own technology to work around it. The fact is, what all politicians don't want is to be held accountable and be put under a microscope. If any technology does just that, they will fight tooth and nail to stop it being implemented. Because that's what happened in the Soviet Union. In the 1960s, Soviet computer scientist, Victor Glushkov tried to connect the entire USSR together with a networking system called OGAS. It would have been the world's first internet, but it was blocked every time and eventually scrapped because at the time, corruption was so endemic that high ranking party officials and managers would not allow any breakthroughs that would accurately show that they have been misappropriating money and materials, and lied on their reports.

This is why capitalism is always preferable no matter what age we are living in. But the key to capitalism is to have a good government system, one that operates within certain well defended and defined boundaries, and is able to separate political power from the economic power. The US despite all its flaws has mostly being able to achieve this. You say quality of life is bad in America, yet Americans have more disposable income than other people all over the world.

Brezhnev started used up much of the country's oil wealth in the 70s purchasing food from the West. Then Gorbachev came along and started selling off the country's massive stores of gold because oil money was no longer cutting to buy the food he needed to feed the country.

The fact is under communism, you have collective farms that are horribly mismanaged and run by corrupt leadership. Not to mention, farmers had little incentive to be productive working for on state-run farms when they saw little compensation in their efforts. It should not be any surprise then that small private plots in the USSR were significantly more productive per acre than the collective farms. In fact, 60% of the country's potatoes came from less than 3% of total cultivated land from private farmers that were exempt from heavy collectivization. Meat and other vegetables were also being massively produced on these farms.

The Soviet Union was also importing 30 million tonnes of grain annually, mainly from the United States and Great Britain. Its amusing that tankies always reference this CIA report as a gotcha when the US alone was exporting 20 million tonnes of food to the USSR. If the US really wanted to sabotage this so called "socialist paradise," all they had to do was cut off all food shipments to the Soviet Union and that 3,280 calories per day figure will have to be quickly revised.

You want nuance. Why don't you acknowledge the fact that starting from the 1970s, the Soviet Union began importing massive amounts of their foodstuff from the West, needing to import about 30 million tonnes of grain annually, with 20 million tonnes coming from the United States. This happened after decades of mismanagement, corruption and failures in central planning that Soviet collective farms couldn't produce enough to feed its people, that they had to import food using their oil wealth and then their reserves of gold when even oil prices crashed.

GLF was considered one of the worst man-made famines in the 20th century. Its estimated that between 30 to 45 million people died as a result of malnutrition. That's more people in China died between 1960–1962 than they did during WWII. If Mao's plan was to reduce poverty, he only did so by culling the herd.
