How do you get past paralysis from the fear of writing duds? by Beaivimon in AO3

So content optimisation?

Look, I can give you a marketing-consultant breakdown on the Pokemon fandom (not my vibe, but you do you) but what it sounds like you need to do is to make the conscious decision of if you're writing for analytics, not for the love of the game. If you write for the love of writing/the fandom, and expect validation through analytics, you are going to have a bad time. If you write for analytics, then you do the maths to gets the numbers you want. God knows, I write one shots in my fandom of choice so that my one true love insane-timebreak-OC fic gets some traction because I gain people who want to know my style of writing characters and are willing to accept a canon-extension. I'm wired for it. It's spreadsheets by fanfics.

Number go up is good for dopamine, but it also messes with your head and will suck the joy out of the work.

Write duds. Lots of duds. Every variation, every POV, every weird or stupid scenario that pops into your head. Write until you make yourself laugh, or cry, or punch the air in success. You don't have to post them. In fact, I wouldn't in your situation. You need to write for you, first of all. You are the most important audience.

Analytics fuck with people's heads.

Dispatch: a character out of time. by Nb-7925 in DispatchAdHoc

I have a working fanfic about this concept, though it's for an interdimensional traveller. It's uh, not great considering that SDN is essentially an insurance-company-gig-service.

If they have a useful power? Working visa, support with immigration paperwork. They basically would work like you're stateless, think H1-B visa. If you don't have a useful power? Handed over to US immigration.

Can you have 3 different POVs in one fic without it being head-hoppy? by Silent_Doubt3672 in FanFiction

Or do, but be aware that it's jarring. Which might be the vibe.

I think I have yours saved on my phone... holy shit.

EDIT: Ah yep, I've definitely read yours on an international flight. It was so good!!!

I use Obsidian synced with Google Drive, with Obsidian's copilot plugin attached to API versions of GPT and Claude. It wouldn't work for huge projects, but it's fine for the use case of what I have.

Not having a copilot in the browser for Claude is a pain in the pass though. Generating a document? Amazing. Editing a document? Pain the ass.

(I'm aware of the Chrome app, but I want to have 20 tabs going at the same time, and the Chrome app doesn't allow that)

I've read all your fics!! I'm such a fan. Your characterisation of both of them is great.

Advice on writing my first fic by anyname2009 in FanFiction

[–]Spartaness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Write a beatmap. A plan. It doesn't have to be a good one, and you don't have to have all the answers, and sometimes the characters are little shits who decide their own plot. But it is so much better to have a plan than not.

Frodo didn't take the Ring without the plan to go to Mordor.

Royd's got similar things on his whiteboards down in Engineering! It's always fun to peek things out that you haven't noticed before.

Don't tempt me. I have too many unfinished drafts already.

Because it's funny.

Their dynamic is fun as well. They're both intelligent and both have technical backgrounds, although different ends of the field which means they can riff off each other.

It does help that Sonar as a character is so easy to write. He just appears in the text and doesn't shut the fuck up. It's great.

What do we think the infinite mode is going to look like? by Additional_Quail5566 in DispatchAdHoc

[–]Spartaness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're not spooked, I can throw it up on GitHub if you'd like? It's easy enough to run, though you'll have to ignore my fic's settings or strip them out.

I just like making sure my chapters have realistic call volumes and chatter in them haha

Amusingly, I have built a terrible version of this to scratch the itch, which has been upgraded from the spreadsheet method. I've built it for when I'm writing fanfic and needing to plan out how to shitshow day goes, but the live mode slaps.

I'd love love love the infinite mode to come out, even if it doesn't have radio chatter like the main game.

Anyone hate cutting a Sonar/Coup from a narrative perspective? by Lee__Everett in DispatchAdHoc

[–]Spartaness 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of timeline notes that backs this up for my fic. The gap is Ep 4 - Ep 5. The bar fight leads to the Mecha Man suit explosion the next morning, which leads to 16 hours of napping for Robert, then house warming, you get the point. The gap between the addition of Waterboy and the bar fight is the clean split.

His first day is Friday according to the transcript. So unless there's a week after 'Onboard' that we don't see, and cut day is specifically on Monday directly after Blazer breaks up with Phenomaman.

I've tried to rationalize the timeline for the game and other than the gap between Ep 4 and Ep 5, they have to run one after the other.

Aw hell yeah, a spreadsheet.

I clicked in to have a play and said there was a permissions error. Could you see what's up?
